Asus Taichi arrives at the FCC

Is it a tablet? Is it a notebook? Well, those two questions will most probably be asked by many people when they first lay their eyes on it, and that also depends on how you plan to make full use of this particular piece of consumer electronics. The Asus Taichi easily falls under the category of a notebook/tablet hybrid, where it has just arrived at the FCC while picking up collective nods of approval from folks there.

The Asus Taichi will come in either 11.6” or 13.3” flavors, where it will carry an Ivy Bridge Core i7 processor underneath the hood, which is accompanied by 4GB RAM and in an interesting design twist, a display that is located on both sides of its lid. No official launch date has been attached to the Asus Taichi, but since it has already passed the rigorous tests from the FCC, you can be sure that it is well on its way to the masses. One thing’s for sure, you will not find the Asus Taichi released before the rollout of Windows 8, as the latest operating system from Microsoft is going to debut later this month.

13″ MacBook Pro with Retina display rumored to be facing production quality issues as well

It seems that not only is Apple facing low yield rates for the iPhone 5 (largely in thanks to their choice of going with the aluminum unibody chassis), a recent report from Digitimes has suggested that Apple is facing the same issue with its MacBook Pro as well. To be more specific, it seems that the rumored 13” MacBook Pros with Retina displays are facing low yield rates due to an issue with the Retina displays. Shipments of the alleged laptop was originally pegged for a September release, although word has it that shipments are now expected to take place in October instead.

At the same time, it seems that the rumored iPad mini is also facing production issues. The report has stated that the iPad mini is supposedly “suffering low yields for components such as the display and chassis,” and while it is said to use the same material as the current-gen iPad, it is expected to sport a different design and “tactile feel”, whatever that’s supposed to mean. However it should be noted that Digitimes does not have the best track record when it comes to reporting Apple rumors, and since neither the 13” MacBook Pro with Retina display nor the iPad mini has been made official, we suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now.

Sony Vaio Tap 20 and Duo 11 spearhead Sony’s Windows 8 launch

Ahead of the Windows 8 launch, Sony has just announced its line up for the United States, with the Sony Vaio Tap 20 and the Sony Vaio Duo 11 being the most striking Windows 8 computers from the company.

The Vaio Tap 20 ($879+) is particularly original as it is basically a 20″ all-in-one computer that can also run autonomously for a few hours, thanks to its integrated battery. The design is very nice and I would recommend taking a good look at it in a Sony Store if you have the opportunity. We’ve already covered the Vaio Tap 20 hardware during IFA, so the other interesting highlight of the Tap 20 is that Sony is including high-quality gesture-optimized software so that users can take advantage of Windows 8 and the tablet format from day 1. That includes ArtRage Studio, a great painting tool, and Fingertapps Organizer, a message board for the whole family. (more…)

Western Digital My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender

If you feel that your home is somehow located in an area where it is virtually impossible to get a decent Wi-Fi signal even a few meters away from the router, you might want to call some paranormal investigators to drop by (assuming the router has been thoroughly checked and certified to work just fine), otherwise you might want to enlist the help of the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender from Western Digital. As its name suggests, the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender will be able to expand wireless home networks into out-of-reach areas of the home, delivering faster, stronger and more reliable wireless network coverage to a wide range of devices such as notebooks, desktops, smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, media players, smart TVs and virtually any other device with Wi-Fi connectivity.

The My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender is able to expand the Wi-Fi blanket thanks to its 3×3 multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) antenna array design that is superior to the 2×2 design found in most of the other devices. Expect to pick up the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender for $89.99 a pop. [Press Release]

World War 2 inspired cipher to secure your emails

Who would have thought of marrying knowledge from more than 60 years ago with modern communications – through the clever implementation of an unbreakable cipher from World War 2 into emails. The Vernam cipher was developed all the way back in 1917 by AT&T engineer Gilbert Vernam alongside U.S. Army Captain Joseph Mauborgne, where this cipher was used to protect relayed data in the second World War. Captain Mauborgne further strengthened the cipher through the implementation of genuinely random keys which will not repeat, and Singaporean company Rune Information Security Corp. decided to be inspired by his work by delivering an e-mail encryption system that they call Deadbolt.

The Deadbolt system comprises of a USB stick which will plug into your Mac or PC, where all that is required after that would be a few clicks in order to secure data, and it can be used with either the common OpenPGP encryption or the Vernam cipher. Email is not the only thing it secures, as your Facebook, Skype, Gmail and LinkedIn messages will also fall under a similar umbrella of protection.

Panasonic Toughbook SX2 brings tough to business notebooks

When it comes to churning out rugged devices, no other name seem to do it better than Panasonic of Japan. In fact, they do provide updates to previous Toughbooks in the past, and their latest effort involves the Panasonic Toughbook SX2, touted to be one of the more rugged notebooks around. Panasonic claims an unprecedented 14.5 hours of battery life on the road – although we do wonder just how it will perform when placed in our hands.

An Intel Core i5-3320M vPro processor runs underneath the hood (3MB cache, up to 3.3GHz), sporting Intel Turbo Boost Technology, where it is accompanied by a 12” LED display, a 720p webcam, USB 3.0 ports, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a built-in optical drive that is cleverly integrated in an unusual manner as seen above, all crammed into a lightweight, drop-resistant magnesium alloy design that is said to be able to shrug off a 30-inch drop to base while on/off, as well as a 12-inch drop on all other surfaces when turned off. The Panasonic Toughbook SX2 will be available later in the month from $2,649 upwards, depending on the configuration of your choice, but that will come with a standard three-year limited warranty.

VIZIO Confirms Windows 8 across PC line-up

VIZIO has just confirmed that its holiday PC line-up will feature Windows 8 across the board. The flagship Windows 8 devices will be the 24″ and 27″ all-in-one PCs, but you can also expect Microsoft’s new operating system to show up on Vizio’s two Ultrabooks and in the company’s 14″ and 15.6″ laptops.

The VIZIO all-in-one had been shown earlier in the year at CES, and were launched in June. Until now, they came pre-installed with Windows 7, which is nice, but not as gesture-friendly as Windows 8. It is clear that the all-in-ones (AIO) PC are the heavy Windows 8 hitters in VIZIO’s line up. The laptops will benefit from trackpad gestures, but won’t be a game-changer in terms of user interaction.

The all-in-one PCs start at $998 and you can head to our previous coverage for more details and photos about them.
