Box experience is now enhanced

If you are a user of Box, then surely you would be interested to hear about a major announcement that concerns Box – where the company intends to make it even easier for their customers to use today as well as in the future. We are talking about 140,000 businesses and 14 million users thereabouts here, where they use Box to share, access and manage content from virtually anywhere as long as there is a decent Internet connection.

Box has received a new header which will place search at the center of your experience, and as you type in the search bar, relevant results will start to pop up, and you can even hover over a file to check out who was the creator. Sporting easily-recognizable icons that make navigation a snap from anywhere within Box, your collection of pending tasks and messages are also located in the header, letting you find out what you need to attend to with but a single click.

The new Box experience should be introduced to everyone’s accounts in the coming weeks, so be patient if you haven’t yet received yours!

Western Digital unveils My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8TB and My Book 4TB external hard drives

Long gone are the days when 500GB of external storage was enough and if you believe that to be the case, Western Digital has taken the wraps off their new external hard drives, the My Book Thunderbolt Duo with 8TB of storage, and My Book with 4TB of storage, both of which are compatible with Mac and PCs although the former will come with a Thunderbolt cable that will allow for speedy data transfers, along with the possibility of daisy-chaining up to 6 of these hard drives bringing total storage to 48TB.

The My Book 4TB on the other hand will be USB 3.0 compatible which promises speeds of up to three times faster compared to USB 2.0. This model is also expected to be compatible with Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 when it is launched. The My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8TB will be priced at $850 and will come with a Thunderbolt cable for convenience, while the My Book 4TB will go for $250.

German Police monitor Gmail, Skype, and Facebook via snooping malware

malwarealertEfficient Germany might have run into a hiccup – especially after the government allegedly let it be known (by accident, of course), that the police in Germany did state that they perform monitoring duties on Skype, Google Mail, MSN Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and Facebook chat should the need arise. This raises a whole lot of ethical and privacy questions. Just how do the German police get around snooping on what their targets communicate over the mentioned email services as well as VoIP programs? Well, snooping malware is the answer of the day.

I guess when it comes to the collective safety of the whole nation being at stake, some actions are justified by select parties, although not everyone is going to agree to it. If you do not want to be snooped on, use a more traditional method of communicating then, what say you? This is also a good reminder that we can always do our part to encrypt communication channels whenever possible, and avoiding those that cannot be encrypted. You should not get hauled up to the local station by posting more cat videos though.

Logitech Wireless Rechargeable Touchpad T650 prepares for invasion

Who would have thought that a touchpad would eventually come with batteries one day? Logitech did, which is why they have just announced the Logitech Wireless Rechargeable Touchpad T650 that was specially designed right out of the box to play nice with the Windows 8 touch interface. Upon unboxing, you will find a large, ultra-smooth glass touch-surface which supports Windows 8 gestures, and it ought to do its part to make sure that navigation among windows is performed in a jiffy, while making sure that there is adequate space for your fingers to roam around.

It does not matter just which part of the Logitech Wireless Rechargeable Touchpad T650 that your fingers rest on, you are still able to perform the basic point, click and scroll functions, while making sure that Windows 8 gestures are not shifted out of the picture, including edge gestures for app switching, app bar and charms bar activation, pinch-to-zoom and three-finger swipe to take you back to the Start Screen. You can also opt to left- or right-click anywhere on the surface of the touchpad, while an embedded sensor ensures that precise tracking is the order of the day, delivering fast and fluid navigation.

The Logitech Wireless Rechargeable Touchpad T650 will retail for $79.99 a pop later this month in the US as well as Europe. [Press Release]

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Ultrabook convertible

If there was an Ultrabook that Dhalsim of Street Fighter fame would settle for, it definitely would be the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 which can flex into many different unique poses, never mind that it is an Ultrabook in the first place. Just like how cars have convertibles, so too, do Ultrabooks, where the IdeaPad Yoga 13 sports a revolutionary hinge which enables it to uniquely move 360° and fold from laptop to tablet in a single, simple and swift motion. This particular model might just kick start the craze for multi-mode Ultrabooks, where it runs on Windows 8 from Microsoft with a 3rd generation Intel Core processor, all crammed into a frame that measures 16.9mm thin, carrying a battery that delivers up to 8 hours of battery life – although that is in theory and has yet to be tested in real life.

Other features include Dolby Home Theatre, a 13.3-inch high definition IPS display, and special Motion Control technology for easy manipulation of your media. You can also use your fingers to manipulate the data on your Yoga 13, as the display itself carries touchscreen functionality. Just make sure you washed your hands nice and clean beforehand so that no greasy smudges are left streaking the display. The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 will arrive from October 26th onwards (just in time for the Windows 8 release), with pricing starting from $1,099 upwards, depending on the configuration.

Virgin Media gives network speed a boost in ‘Double Your Speeds‘ campaign

If you feel that your Internet is just too slow at the moment (wait until you go to countries where broadband is still stuck under the 10Mbps range before you complain), then Virgin Media might have the solution for you by launching the Double Your Speeds campaign, fully intending to boost the speeds of 100Mbps customers to 120Mbps. I know, mathematically speaking, that is not exactly doubling up one’s speeds, but Virgin Media figured out that this new tier might end up creating one of the fastest speeds on the continent of Europe.

Virgin Media has already performed upgrades to 40% of its network as part of the enhancement program, and eventually, these improvements should theoretically deliver better support for streaming and entertainment services, in addition to allowing more users to access the Internet simultaneously. At this point in time, Virgin Media delivers speeds of 30Mbps, 60Mbps and up to 100Mb/120Mbps, with the enhancement program being tipped to be completed sometime in summer next year. Our readers over in Europe, what do you think of this effort?

Major Windows 8 update released

Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system is being prepared for a release later this month, and Microsoft has just released a major Windows 8 update that will hopefully see its core applications such as Mail and Calendar to keep up with the Joneses at the very minimum – we’re talking about the previous standards set by Apple and Google, of course. Patch Tuesday is no more, and it will now be known as Update Tuesday – at least for the moment. The update to Windows 8 Release to Manufacturing (RTM) will improve the previously solid performance in Windows 8, where this update is made available for all Windows 8 machines the moment they boot up this coming October 26th and afterwards.

A Microsoft executive said, “By developing better test automation and test coverage tools we are happy to say that Windows 8 will be totally up to date for all customers starting at General Availability.”

This is a shift in the way things are done, where Microsoft has released unobtrusive and yet important updates the moment they are hot and ready, instead of biding their time by saving “the best for the last”, proverbially speaking, in the form of service packs. Nipping things in the bud are always the best policy, methinks. How about you? Are you excited about the Windows 8 release yet?
