Skype ‘worm’ malware infects Windows PCs

Skype logoToday would be the day where Mac users are able to poke fun at Windows users, as Skype, the VoIP software of choice for many, is the platform that hackers used to distribute a “worm” which will infect only Windows-powered computers. How do you know that this is a “worm” and not a legit question from a friend? Remember, when you see an instant message that says “lol is this your new profile pic?”, and clicking on it, you would have then downloaded a file that holds a Trojan horse malware file.

Once the malware gets to work, a backdoor will be opened, enabling hackers to hijack infected PCs, making sure they are part of a “botnet army” afterwards. Not only that, if the hacker wants to, you can be locked out of your machine – a digital ransom, so to speak. This is a variant of the well-known “Dorkbot” worm, so you might want to think thrice before simply clicking on any link, even if it comes from an apparently trusted source.

Logitech unveils G710+ mechanical gaming keyboard

Are you in the market for a new gaming keyboard? Well if you are, perhaps you might be interested to learn that Logitech has unveiled their new mechanical gaming keyboard, the G710+. For gamers who love the feel of mechanical but don’t enjoy the clicking noises that it produces, the G710+ comes with dampening rings underneath each key that will reduce the noise coming from the keyboard, although on the flipside this might put gamers off who love the clacking noises that are typically associated with mechanical keyboards.

The keys will also be backlit with a white LED light and can be turned off or adjusted to four different brightness levels. As expected from a gaming keyboard, the WASD and the arrow keys can have its brightness adjusted separate from the rest of the keys. Logitech will also include their latest Logitech Gaming Software which allows users to assignment macros or Lua gaming scripts to the keyboard’s G-keys. The G710+ will also feature anti-ghosting capabilities, a 26-key rollover and will also be compatible with Windows 8. Logitech has also boasted a keyboard lifetime of 50 million keystrokes. The Logitech G710+ is expected to be available in the US beginning in October and will be priced at $150.

Just last week, we talked about how Firefox on the upcoming Windows 8 operating system is going to look awesome, and here we are with the Mozilla Firefox 18 for Metro preview being released to the masses. This version of Firefox will run on x86 Windows 8, whether you want to do so in the classic Windows environment or in the new ‘Metro’ environment, that does not really matter for the browser. Folks who run the 64-bit RTM release of Windows 8 are able to download a nightly build of Mozilla Firefox from the Elm development branch, where it currently has taken up residence in the experimental repository where majority of the other ‘Metro’ development work has happened.

Similar in nature to the Firefox Nightly channel, this particular repository churns out nightly builds. Not only that, the builds will be self-updating, as it provides a means for you to track Metro Firefox development. If you are interested in previewing the browser, it will comprise of (but not limited to) a new Metro-style Firefox Start page, Metro touch and swipe gestures, support for Firefox sync, integration with Windows 8 ‘charms’ and the Australis interface. Mozilla has boldly promised to deliver additional features in the coming weeks and months such as tightened up Windows integration, improved performance and responsiveness so that users are able to experience ‘a first class Firefox experience for Windows 8’.
