Batman: Arkham City Game of the Year Edition makes its way onto Mac in November

One of the drawbacks to gaming on a Mac is that not are games are compatible. Although Mac gamers could always install Windows via Boot Camp, it could be seen as troublesome for some. That being said it seems that Batman: Arkham City is finally making its way onto Mac. If you haven’t played the game before and wondering what the big deal is, then it looks like come November you will be able to get your hands on the game.

Possibly to make it up to Mac gamers, the Mac version of Batman: Arkham City will be the Game of the Year edition. What this means is that gamers can look forward to having all the downloadable content bundled with the game which include the Catwoman and Harley Quinn’s Revenge pack. Better late than never, right?

Fujitsu Gaze Detection Technology lets you stare and use the PC

Fujitsu Gaze Detection[CEATEC 2012] If you have ever wished that you could stare at your screen all day while it finishes your work for you, it looks like we’re a step closer to that happening. The folks over at Fujitsu have come up with a new technology that can help turn your fantasy into a reality. Called Gaze Detection Technology, it will allow PC users to control some functions of the computer with the aid of their eyes. All they have to do is gaze in a certain direction, and the Gaze Detection sensor (made up of an infrared LED and a CMOS camera) can tell what you want to do. No more using the scrollwheel on your mouse or hitting the scroll keys on the keyboard while you’re browsing – just stare in the direction you want  the screen to scroll.

While not having to perform certain commands with your hands may seem trivial at first, the saved keystrokes and mouse movements can slowly add up overtime (assuming the Gaze Detection is used effectively by the user) and can save a lot of time in the long run. A pretty neat idea, though folks who tire out in front of their computers might do well to turn off the feature during those occasions, lest they accidentally shut down programs and lose their unsaved work because they looked down for too long (then again, it sounds like a good incentive to stay awake at work).

Light switches for faster Internet?

I am quite sure that you have heard of the phrase, “fighting fire with fire”, but how about this new one in the world of engineering, “using light to control light”? A team of scientists and engineers at the University of Minnesota has managed to invent a special microscale optical device which is said to be able to greatly increase the speed of downloading information online with another benefit – reducing the overall cost of Internet transmission. Just how does this device do it? It relies on the force generated by light in order to flip a mechanical switch of light on and off at a very high speed. This would definitely open up new pathways for the world of computation and signal processing using light alone instead of electrical current, resulting in higher performance and lower power consumption.

Mo Li, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering in the University of Minnesota’s College of Science and Engineering said, “This device is similar to electromechanical relays but operates completely with light.” I definitely am not complaining if we have even faster Internet speeds, not to mention living in a greener environment, how about you?

YouTube Turkey operates under Turkish web domain

Turkey, one of the model progressive Islamic nations at the moment, has finally emerged the victor in a long-running battle to persuade YouTube to operate under a Turkish web domain. This would mean that the Turkish government will now have a tighter rein on what YouTube can and cannot display, as well as requiring the video sharing website to pay Turkish taxes. Banned for over two years in 2008, Transport and Communications Minister Binali Yildirim said about the situation, “This is an important development. For a long time we have made a call to Internet firms in Turkey: ‘You are operating in this country, you must be resident here’.”

This means that YouTube will now operate under the ‘com.tr’ umbrella, and YouTube also did release a brief statement yesterday, touting that they had launched its Turkish website, where users will be able to experience a “Turkish-language experience with great, locally relevant content”. In a dignified manner, they did not let out a beep concerning any dispute with the Turkish government prior. Time to see more whirling dervish videos in the local context!

The Pirate Bay suffers from extended outage

On Monday and Tuesday, folks who wanted to access the popular torrent site The Pirate Bay would have found themselves to be unable to do so, and this time period coincided with a government raid on its former Web hosting service. According to folks who are in the know, The Pirate Bay claims that it suffered the outage because of a power outage, but rest assured that all of the necessary is being done in order to have it return online later this week. Needless to say, for a site of The Pirate Bay’s size, it does not need to take too long before its Facebook page is flooded by comments and grouses from users.

The Pirate Bay’s operators said, “We have a relay there but not that much more. This combined with a power failure at another place is the reason why we’re down at the moment.” They also assured users on Monday that the site will “be back with full force, hopefully later today,” but that did not materialize and on Tuesday, the target was pushed back further.

Betaville allows New Yorkers to experience real-world SimCity

I am quite sure that a fair many of us have already played SimCity (or some variant of the game itself) in the past, so it would be like a fish taking to water when one enjoy Betaville, a multi-person open source platform that enables participants to construct whatever empty spaces are available in New York City (that sounds as impossible as looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack), making it share a rather uncanny resemblance to the hugely popular game SimCity. Imagine walking through the streets of New York, or even fly over them, arriving at empty spaces which are depicted by inverted yellow pyramids that hover over the vacant spot.

You are also able to check out the energy usage of some of the buildings in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, in addition to whether there is the capability of heating these via the use of alternative fuels. Betaville opens up your imagination as you work on the glamorous New York skyline, shaping it according to how you would want it to look like. Betaville’s developers are keeping their fingers crossed that these designs would be able to be incorporated into a real world city eventually. I wonder what do the city planners have to say about this…
