Microsoft aware of zero day exploit for 7 weeks before emergency patch was issued?

We do know that the recent Zero Day exploit in Internet Explorer was patched by Microsoft (albeit this is but a temporary measure), but there are rumors going around that Microsoft was aware concerning this exploit for a good 7 weeks prior, and for a company of their size and stature to not do anything about it nor release a statement of caution to the masses reeks of irresponsibility – assuming that the rumors are true, of course.

An online source as reported by Gregg Keizer, said “Microsoft may have known about last week’s Internet Explorer (IE) zero-day bug for some time.” The security bulletin saw Microsoft issue thanks to “an anonymous researcher, working with TippingPoint’s Zero Day Initiative, for reporting the execCommand Use After Free Vulnerability ( CVE-2012-4969).” Assuming that the latest report was CVE-2012-4969, one can then make the inference that Microsoft was already aware of the IE Zero Day exploit for over seven weeks before Eric Romang, the researcher who announced the discovery of the exploit on a hacker-controlled server, did so in the middle of September. Juicy stuff, but rumors remain as just that until they are substantiated by cold, hard facts.

Iran blocks Google, prepares domestic Internet system

Iran has not had the best relationships with the US in the past, and this would obviously trickle down to affect other American products such as the US dollar, Gmail and YouTube, among others. Well, you can make Google to be part of the list now, as there is word that Iran intends to transfer their citizens’ virtual connection to a domestic Internet network, which is part of a move that officials had taken with the intention to improve cyber security, but the folks on the ground, everyday Iranians, have the concern that this is just another method for the Iranian government to control their access to the Internet.

This particular announcement was relayed by a government deputy minister on Sunday, where it was delivered via state television, announcing that not only Google’s search engine, but its Gmail email service as well, would be blocked “within a few hours”. The official delivering the announcement continued, “Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice.” That’s a more soothing word than “indefinitely” for sure.

According to the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA), the ban on Google had plenty to do with the anti-Islamic film which was posted on the company’s YouTube site, where it has since resulted in outrage throughout majority of the Muslim world, but this is just speculation and not an official confirmation. Once the blockade is in place, the next step would be connect ordinary Iranians to the national network, and the entire shebang starts to sound as though Iran is adopting steps that North Korea has taken.

Mac Mini in Apple II Disk Drive available on eBay

The modder who managed to cram in the innards of a Mac Mini into an old school Apple II Disk Drive some years ago has decided to put up the creation on eBay in order for him to have additional space for other projects. This particular Mac Mini mod will be powered by a 1.5Ghz Core Solo processor, where it is accompanied by 2GB RAM – paltry by today’s standards, but this does not mean that it will not be able to work decently even today, assuming you are not in too interested in video games, as standard web browsing, emails and social networking ought to be able to run just fine on this puppy.

It must be said that one of the more interesting aspects of this Mac Mini Apple II Disk Drive mod would be the slot-loading DVD drive which has been perfectly aligned with the old floppy disk slot. Modder Charles Mangin decided to list a starting price of $500 for this 5.25″ floppy drive Mac Mini mod, although those who want to pick it up on the spot without having to fight with other peoples’ bids will have to fork out $1,000 outright.

Skype for Peace crowd-funding campaign launched

Crowd-funding is an idea that has definitely taken off in a big way, where we have seen some interesting devices and ideas being implemented, while others were swept aside because no one bought the idea. Heck, even VoIP giants Skype has stepped forward and is exploring the crowd-funding idea with Skype for Peace, where all funds raised via this program will be donated to Peace One Day. Peace One Day is an organization which is devoted to promoting non-violence regardless of its form, apart from expanding their Global Education Resource and to reach even more students worldwide. If you believe in this idea, you can participate from $10 onwards, where Skype will also match each dollar donated up to a total of $100,000.

The Skype crowd-funding initiative kicks off today, where it will end this coming November 21st. That would mean there are two more months to go before the entire exercise ends. Those who want to start collecting their brownie points for the afterlife can start doing their part from today onwards.

‘Edible’ electronics from silk lasers could be the future

We talk about how much paper is wasted each day in offices and homes, where moving to the digital platform is supposed to eliminate the paper problem. The thing is, electronic waste is also a big issue to resolve, and with more and more countries adopting digital platforms, waste from obsolete phones, cameras, computers and other mobile devices have proved to be a potentially huge problem. Not only are circuitry and packaging non-biodegradable, but most of the time they are laced with toxic substances including heavy metals. How about a biodegradable piece of electronics that could even be eaten once you are done with it? Sounds disgusting, but who knows, you might want to slather some ketchup over your keyboard in the future.
