Google Apps stops support for Internet Explorer 8

Internet search giant Google has decided that their Google Apps cloud-based enterprise email and collaboration platform will no longer offer support for Internet Explorer 8, and when you read between the lines for that, it would mean you would be forced to make an operating system upgrade from Windows XP to something newer. In a way this is rather sad for the more melancholic among you, but then again there is always this sense of inevitability as time passes by. I mean, the day had to come sooner or later, right? Unless Microsoft figured out that we would still be using Windows XP a couple of decades down the road.

New PC technology can block notifications when you’re busy

Multitasking is great but sometimes, one simply can’t take the pressure of dealing with a whole lot of tasks at the same time. For instance, when working on your PC, it can be annoying when right in the middle of something important or urgent, you start receiving pop-up notifications.

Such notifications not only distract you, they also waste your time when you have to attend to them only to find out they’re nothing significant. Now, the Graduate University of Advanced Studies in Japan is working on a new technology which could automatically sense when you’re busy working on a PC, and block notifications. (more…)

Pressure-sensing PC technology knows when you’re busy, blocks notifications accordingly

Pressure-sensing PC technology knows when you're busy, blocks notifications accordingly

We know better than most that when you’re working to a deadline, constant pop-ups, notifications and pings can be a real pain. Our frustrations might soon become a thing of the past, however, with some help from boffins at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies in Japan. They are working on technology which monitors keyboard pressure and silences those distractions until it deems you’re not busy, showing over 80 percent accuracy during volunteer testing. Understanding that quiet time is also appreciated for other tasks, they plan to use similar techniques to spot when you’re staring intently at that report or — more importantly — attending to a beverage. It’s still early days for the project, but if the stress-saving tech ever spawns a product, we’ll take two please.

Microsoft employees enjoy a very Windows Christmas

It would seem that being a Microsoft employee this year would require you to purchase a new jacket, preferably one with large pockets, as it was reported that Microsoft employees will be on the receiving end of Surface tablets, Windows Phone 8 handsets, and Windows 8 computers.

The announcement from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer did rouse quite the enthusiastic response at the end of the company’s annual employee meeting. We are not talking about just a select group of employees, but rather, all of Microsoft’s employees around the world (numbering more than 90,000) will be on the receiving end of a Surface RT tablet and a Windows Phone 8 device of their choice among others. Hmmm, where do I sign up to be a Microsoft worker? One positive thing about this move would be the fact that the Windows Phone 8 user base would gain an instant boost, although the number will not run up to the millions, it is still a boost nonetheless. It might just help make Windows Phone 8 more visible in the eyes of the world.

Apple patent suggests that Siri for the Mac might be a possibility in the future

It is safe to assume that Siri is a feature that Apple is very proud of, although at the moment it appears to be limited to just Apple’s iOS mobile devices. However given its ability to execute commands, take dictations, perform searches and whatnot, would it be a stretch of the imagination to think that maybe one day, Apple could bring Siri onto their Mac computers? Motorola launches HMC3260 “Cloud Broadband” Android entertainment device in China

If you’ve always wanted an Android based computer, not a smartphone and not a tablet, well it seems like the folks in China might have lucked out as Motorola has officially revealed the Motorola HMC3260 “Cloud Broadband” home entertainment device. It appears to have launched for China’s market at the moment, and there is no word on whether it will be making its way into other markets like in the US, but we guess we’ll take a look at the specs first before letting you decide if this is a device you might want in the first place.

Featuring an 18.5” touchscreen display, the “Cloud Broadband” device will come with a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse. It has been designed to access on-demand video, online games, Android apps along with other cloud-based entertainment services, all of which are readily available in the US, so it won’t be too hard for Motorola to launch something similar stateside as well. Essentially what we have here could be thought of as an 18.5” tablet with a keyboard and mouse accessory, so what do you think? Would this be a product you might be interested in purchasing?
