HP Spectre ONE All-In-One PC is beautiful

HP has just launched the Spectre ONE ($1299), an All-In-One (AIO) desktop computer that is only 11.5mm thick at its thinnest point. This computer has been designed to look great, and be a bit of a “show off” piece in some way. To achieve such a lofty goal, HP did put the electronics in the base and got rid of legacy features like the optical drive, and there’s no TV Tuner either. Instead, HP expects customers to use online services and downloads to watch video content. (more…)

HP Spectre One: Could This Be the Ideal All-In-One PC? [Computers]

When HP rolled its first TouchSmart All-In-One back in 2008, the potential of such a machine was evident even if the idea itself wasn’t fully realized. Enter the 23.6-inch HP Spectre One. Gone is the IR-based touch technology used in previous devices. In its place, a capacitive, multitouch panel. And no longer do we have to suffer through an OS not designed for fingers. Windows 8 is here, which at the very least elevates touch-based Windows devices from gimmick to usable. More »

Refreshed iMacs rumored to be revealed on the 12th of September alongside iPhone 5

We’re sure that many Apple fans were disappointed earlier this year when Apple took the wraps off the new MacBooks, thus neglecting the iMac’s refresh in the process. Well it seems that come 12th September, not only will Apple be unveiling the next-gen iPhone, but according to reports (via Fox News), refreshed iMacs could also be unveiled. It is unclear as to what sort of new features the refreshed iMacs will have, but Ivy Bridge processors, USB 3.0 ports and expanded SSD capabilities are reportedly among the list. Seems like an odd time to announce the iMac given that the iPhone’s announcement will probably overshadow it, but for those who have been waiting for an iMac update, perhaps your wish might come true on the 12th of September. We’ll treat this with some skepticism for now and suggest you do the same, but check back with us then to see if the rumors have panned out.

Future Computers Will Not Only Be Cooled by Water, They’ll Compute With Water [Guts]

Development of Twitter for Mac might have been cancelled [Rumor]

If you’re a frequent user of Twitter for Mac, you could be in for some bad news. According to MG Siegler, he tweeted that Twitter for Mac has ceased in development and that the client will no longer be updated. Given that the last update for the app was back in June of 2011, it certainly does not seem surprising that this could indeed be the case. However interestingly the rumors have also suggested that Twitter had reportedly prepared an update that will make it compatible (aesthetically) with the Retina display MacBook Pro, but we’re not sure if those plans were shelved or if that will be the last update. Some have speculated with Twitter acquiring Tweetdeck, there is a chance that Tweetdeck could become the new Twitter for Mac instead, although given that Twitter has been integrated into the latest version of OS X Mountain Lion, perhaps a native client might have been seen as no longer necessary.

Arizona man gets 30-months in prison after infecting 72,000 computers

A man from Arizona has been handed a prison sentence that amounts to 30 months after infecting up to an estimated 72,000 computers, and this is a byproduct of using botnets and selling access to them to a willing buyer. Joshua Schichtel is said to be connected to a ring of hackers known as DDOS Mafia who relied on denial-of-service (DOS) attacks that targeted businesses on behalf of a business owner. Charges were filed in 2004 in California, but those failed to stick because the prosecutors there failed to file an indictment by the required deadline.

Still, the long arm of the law has finally caught up to Joshua’s antics, where he pleaded guilty on August 17th last year in Washington, D.C., to one count of attempting to cause damage to multiple computers without prior authorization via the transmission of programs, codes or commands, which is classified as a violation of the U.S. Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. He was paid $1,500 for his criminal act, making that average out to around $50 amounting to one month in prison as “payment” for his crime.
