Indian government upset Twitter users by ban

The Indian government has not gotten into the good books of its people in the past, and it seems as though the latest development is going to help it nudge towards that direction either. In fact, the government of the day faced a potential backlash of angry Twitter users after they ordered Internet service providers to block approximately 20 accounts which, according to officials, claim had spread scare-mongering material which had the potential to threaten national security. The Indian government threatened “appropriate and suitable action” against Twitter if it failed to remove the accounts as soon as possible.

According to several Indian newspapers, this might eventually lead to an entire ban on Twitter access in India, but this rather drastic step in theory has yet to be confirmed of happening. In fact, Twitter has not come up with a statement on their part either, never mind that there are 16 million Twitter users in India itself. One user tweeted, “Dear GOI (Government of India), Keep youre Hands Off My Internet. Else face protest”, after over 300 Web pages were blocked in the process. It is difficult to regulate what is happening online though, so it would be interesting to see just how India’s government works to contain the situation.

New Microsoft logo 25 years later [Video]

Microsoft is a household name, and I am quite sure that the company’s logo has already been ingrained and etched onto our memories by now. The thing is, even after a quarter of a century, things do get a little stale, which is why Microsoft has unveiled a new logo. Everything from Windows 8 to Windows Phone 8 to Xbox services to the next version of Office, one common thing will tie all of these products together for a familiar and seamless experience, regardless of whether you are using a desktop computer, rocking to a smartphone or tablet, or watching a TV; and that would be the new Microsoft logo.

The new Microsoft logo comprises of two components, the logotype and the symbol. The logotype relies on the Segoe font for its inspiration, which is the same font that sees action in the rest of Microsoft’s products in addition to their marketing communications. As for the symbol, its squares of color are meant to express the diverse portfolio of products made available to the masses.

The big question is, hot or not? Do you think that the new Microsoft logo is going to take off in due time, or do you prefer the logo of old?

The Dark Pi Rises in the form of a drone

I am quite sure by now that you have watched The Dark Knight Rises, and the film should have left quite the impression on you. Hopefully, a good one at that, just like how the highly sought out Raspberry Pi mini computer has been transformed into what you see in the video above – The Dark Pi Rises. Aerospace engineer “algorhythmic” has cobbled together a remote controlled, roving surveillance vehicle that is equipped with a night-vision camera. Obviously, a Raspberry Pi mini computer runs at the heart of things to keep everything working fine and dandy.

Considering how the Raspberry Pi itself costs approximately $25, this surveillance drone hack will see bits and pieces from all over the place, including a PlayStation 3 Eye camera and a Wi-Fi module, which is hooked it up to a remote control car while the system has been specially configured to stream video from the camera over the Internet. An Arduino component also sees action to control a motor which enables the camera to move.

Pentagon lays down new social media rules

The Pentagon has just updated their latest set of rules for service members when it comes to using popular social media outlets, and of course, you would expect the big guns such as Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest to rank amongst the list. This new directive on social media is meant to replace the old rules (issued in 2010) that expired on July 15th, where the expiration date was extended last month when the leadership failed to arrive on a new set of guidance. In a space of less than two full years, certainly the social media landscape has changed a fair bit, but the Pentagon did not really catch up with the times, diminishing it to a two-pager on general use of “Internet based capabilities.”

Perhaps the new set of social media rules will arrive in the form of a manual? Will there be a dedicated team of social media enthusiasts who will monitor every Facebook post and Twitter feed before approval? Do our readers have any tips to share with the Pentagon, and make it feel far less formal?

Amazon Glacier archiving service offers affordable storage

It seems that hoarders are hoarders – whether we are talking about a physical or digital sense, you know for sure that some of us find it difficult to just let go of the past and throw stuff away. Those who feel that they can never have enough storage space might want to check out just what Amazon has in store for the masses – the Amazon Glacier archiving service that allows you to stash away any amount of data with high durability without breaking your bank account, while allowing you to toss out that tape library.

Amazon Glacier delivers a price so low, it cannot be beat. How low, you ask? Well, we are talking about just $0.01 (one US penny folks!) for each Gigabyte, on a monthly basis. You are able to stash a little bit, or a whole lot – and we are looking at Petabytes and beyond. You need not even fork out any upfront fee beforehand, and you pay for what you use – something like those Pay As You Go (PAYG) plans for mobile phones. There is no worry about running out of storage space as well, leaving you with one less thing to have a headache over. Check out the Amazon Glacier video above for a more comprehensive explanation.
