Google Street View checks out the Kennedy Space Center

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida has been the focal launch point for an entire generation of space technology and exploration, and you can bet your bottom dollar that many enthusiasts do look forward to being up close and personal with a space shuttle, while following in the paths of astronauts. Well, technology has empowered us in many ways, and today, Google’s Street View has decided to collaborate with NASA so that folks around the world are able to make that historic (albeit a digital one) trip to the doorway to outer space by paying a visit to the Kennedy Space Center, where it is on its way to being a multipurpose launch complex for the next 50 years of space innovation.

Some of the images which you are able to explore online with but a single mouse would be the fabled space shuttle launch pad, Vehicle Assembly Building and Launch Firing Room #4. Imagine checking out the humongous launch pad from the top, or how about peering up at the towering ceiling of the Vehicle Assembly Building which for your information, is taller than the Statue of Liberty?

Twelve South’s BackPack 2 for the iMac/Cinema Display looks pretty convenient

There are accessories out there for our computers and phones and tablets which might not be necessary, but will add a whole lot of convenience if we did have it. This is what Twelve South’s BackPack 2 seems to aim for especially for iMac users and for those who own Apple’s Cinema Displays. As you can see in the image above, the BackPack 2 is an aluminum stand that will rest above the stand of your iMac/Cinema Display. This allows users to place their iPhones or external hard drives there while connected to the ports at the back. While we’ve yet to try this out for ourselves, we can imagine how convenient it might be especially on a cluttered table. Alternatively we don’t see why the BackPack 2 can’t be used to place keys, coins or even your wallet to make sure that it is right in front of you so you don’t forget them on the way out! If you think the BackPack 2 has some use to you, you will be able to pick one up for yourself at Twelve South’s website for $34.99, where additional details and uses of the BackPack 2 can also be found.

YouTube clocks up 4 billion hours of video watched each month?

YouTube logoJust how popular is YouTube? Well, lets just say that it is so popular, that over four billion hours of video are watched each month. If you want to convert that to something else that we can relate to, we are talking about 456,000 years of videos and user uploaded content. On a lighter note, that is also the same as driving yourself nuts willingly by watching the original Nyan Cat video around 66 billion times. In fact, the video sharing giant did report its official figures as three billion hours of footage each month, so the latest unofficial figure of four billion is definitely an achievement not to be sneezed at.

Apart from that, YouTube users have been said to upload up to 72 hours of content every single minute. Compare this to just four years ago – back then, users were uploading a relatively paltry 10 hours of video each minute. It would be interesting to see just how many more hours of video will be uploaded in a year’s time from now. Hopefully Google would have found a really great way to monetize YouTube by then, which will surely drive their share price up north, not to mention open up a whole new avenue for folks to sign up with the video sharing site.

Samsung rolls out fastest embedded NAND storage

Samsung might be experiencing its fair share of legal woes at the moment against Apple at the courthouse, but that does not mean that the rest of the world would stop for the South Korean consumer electronics giant. No sir, it is said that Samsung has started to begin volume production of what they claim to be the fastest embedded NAND storage in the world, targeting use in a plethora of modern day gadgets include smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices. These will come in three different capacities – we are looking at 16GB, 32GB and 64GB densities.

Known as the new Samsung Embedded Multimedia Card (eMMC) Pro Class 1500, it is said to offer the industry’s fastest speeds where an embedded memory device is concerned, being able to read data sequentially at up to 140 MB/s (megabytes per second) and writing it at up to 50 MB/s. When it comes to random reading and writing, it will be able to process up to 3500/1500 IOPS (inputs and outputs per second) – and for comparison’s sake, that is four times the speed of previous eMMC solutions, now how about that for being the proverbial Speedy Gonzales? It would take some time before you see the new Samsung Embedded Multimedia Card (eMMC) Pro Class 1500 arrive in future gizmos. [Press Release]

Raspberry Pi runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Are you a self-made person who worked really hard to get everything that you own today? If you have answered in the affirmative, surely you value the process of solid, honest to goodness work, and should your kid ask you for a car when he or she turns 16, just hand then four tyres and ask them to find means and ways to get the rest of the car themselves. If they make a request for a computer, you can play the role of miser (and motivational thinker) by getting them the $35 Raspberry Pi computer. The operating system bit should not be too hard, where they can always pick up the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich port which is on its way to the Raspberry Pi platform, and it is said that this particular port of Ice Cream Sandwich will play nice with the Pi in many ways, opening up avenues for users to enjoy their favorite Android apps, where the entire experience is enhanced further if the Raspberry Pi has been transformed and modified to be a more touch-friendly machine.

Microsoft Outlook email garners over 1 million users in under a day

Who still uses their Hotmail account, raise your hands. I myself have forgotten what my Hotmail password is, and have been relying on Gmail to serve up all of my email needs through the past few years. Earlier yesterday morning, we talked about how Microsoft has made available their new Outlook.com email application, and they are pleased to announce over Microsoft’s Outlook Twitter account that the Outlook.com email application had already surpassed a million users in under a day of being available. That is not too shabby at all, but perhaps all of that traffic is due to the novelty factor of being new, not to mention some people getting their cats killed. I meant that as in curiosity, so don’t look at me funny and start to ring up the cops. The Outlook email system will be Microsoft’s move on the web email service chessboard, where they intend to eventually phase out their Hotmail system in due time, not to mention trying to integrate more social networking capability with service providers such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. I guess plenty of people would look forward to Skype integration as well.

Sony releases Q1 2012 financial results, eats $312 million loss

Sony's

Sony’s first-quarter figures for 2012 show that despite the company’s optimism three months ago, it’s made a net loss of $312 million. It pulled in a whopping $19.2 billion in sales for the three months ending June 30th, partly credited to bringing Sony Mobile fully into the family. However, the cost of restructuring the Mobile Products and Communications Division (of which Sony Mobile is a part) came to $143 million, wiping out the additional gains to record a loss of $356 million. Gaming-wise, the PlayStation maker suffered a $45 million loss as falling sales of the PSP and PS3 were only partially offset by the sales of the PS Vita. There was better news in its imaging division, while sales of compact cameras fell, DSLRs and “Professional” products took up the slack, resulting in a profit of $160 million.

In a trend we’ve seen across the Home Entertainment industry, sales of LCD televisions continued to fall, forcing the company to eat a loss of $126 million. Movie and TV recorded a loss of $62 million, although that’s primarily due to a dip in advertising sales in India and the cost of marketing (but not producing) The Amazing Spider-Man, the profits of which won’t be recognized until September. Finally, while it spent big to purchase EMI this quarter, big-ticket albums like Usher’s Looking 4 Myself and One Direction’s Up All Night helped the division make a profit of $92 million. While Sony’s treading water to execute Kaz Hirai’s “One” Strategy, it’s still got $8.4 billion stashed under the mattress, and in the face of lower sales, is hoping that reduced costs will help it make $1.6 billion in profit by the end of March 2013.
