USB 3.0 cables of the future might be able to power notebooks

USB 3.0, as everyone knows by now, is the superior standard when it comes to data transfer using this particular standard. Being the most recent version of the USB data/power specification, it is way faster than what USB 2.0 is able to offer. After all, USB 3.0 compatible devices are said to be able to hit speeds of up to 5Gbps, and the future might usher in an age where the power transfer rates is capable of hitting a cool 100 watts of juice. It makes perfect sense that the USB 3.0 specification is still evolving at this point of time, so the next generation version of USB 3.0 could soon make the jump to 100 watts from the current “capacity” of 4.5 Watts.

The recently announced standard is able to offer half a dozen profiles, where they deliver various different amounts of power, depending on what a device needs at this point in time. The profiles will range from as low as 5V/2A, and it will go all the way up to 100 Watts of power at 12V or 20V and 5A — which in theory, is more than enough to juice up a notebook. Could this usher in the end of the proprietary A/C adapter age?

O2 offers free Wi-Fi to London’s West End

Well, we did talk about Wi-Fi hotspots being banned from the London 2012 Olympics just a few days ago, but here we are with news that the O2 will be offering up free Wi-Fi to the city of London, just in time for the Olympics. With London expecting a huge number of tourists to the city, it is good news that the West End area, including Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus, will feature free Wi-Fi connectivity before July ends. This particular deal will be between O2, Westminster City Council and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The good news is this, you will not need to be a subscriber of O2 in order to take advantage of the free Wi-Fi connection.

You can start surfing for free wherever you are – all you need to do is simply register yourself, where you can then hook up automatically each time you are in range of a Wi-Fi hotspot. Tourists will find this free Wi-Fi connection to be especially useful, as it will definitely help one avoid some rather heavy hitting roaming charges.

The locations that will feature free Wi-Fi connection include Exhibition Road, High Street Kensington, Parliament Square, Trafalgar Square, Oxford Street, Regent Street, Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus.

Does Safari for Windows have a future?

Mac users who are now enjoying the latest version of OS X, Mountain Lion, might have also noticed that Safari 6.0 for Mac has also rolled out. In fact, it seemed that Safari for Windows had gone missing entirely from Apple’s site. There is still a direct download which you are able to take advantage of, but this move had led many to speculate that Safari for Windows might have been on its last legs all this while, and the browser itself has been gracefully “put to sleep”, so to speak.

There is also this particular page which was put up by Apple that detailed Safari 5.1.7 for Windows, making us scratch our heads simply because version 5.1.7 rolled out in May this year alongside OS X 10.7.4. MacRumors noted that in the past, Apple did list Safari 5.1.7 for both Mac and Windows on the same page, too. Do you think that it is time to start looking for an alternative, or are you all right with Safari for Windows where it stands at the moment?

Microsoft announces BUILD 2012

BUILD 2012Google and Apple have had their developer conferences earlier this year, and it looks like Microsoft will be next. Today, the company announced that its annual developer conference: BUILD will be held on Microsoft’s campus in Redmond, Washington from October 30th to November 2nd. According to Microsoft, this year’s event will be unlike anything they’ve held on their corporate campus in a long time. Speakers will be from its engineering teams and topics that will be covered include: Windows Azure, Windows Phone 8, Windows Server 2012, Visual Studio 2012 and much more. OS X Mountain Lion Error 100 has solutions in sight

Yes, OS X Mountain Lion, the long awaited update to the OS X operating system platform, is now readily available over at the App Store for $20, but is everything hunky dory? Not really, as some users have already reported running into trouble when downloading this particular installer onto their Mac after purchase. There are a few errors recorded, including “This item is temporarily unavailable. Please try again.”, to the ever annoying Error 100 message which is pretty vague in its description, mentioning “We could not complete your App Store request. An unknown error occurred (100).”

Fret not – these errors can definitely be fixed, taking just a few minutes of your life to rectify before everything ends up as plain sailing again. The easy way would be to quit the App Store by signing out of it, restart your Mac and login to the App Store before making another download attempt, but if this does not work, there is a more advanced way of going about it. Crisis trojan for Mac discovered, reportedly installs itself without requiring user permissions

It used to be that we could go for months without reading about malware or viruses for Mac computers, but it certainly doesn’t seem to be the case these days. That being said, if you’re a Mac user, there is a new trojan on the loose that you might want to take note of. Discovered by the folks at Integro, this particular trojan is dubbed Crisis and can apparently install itself onto Mac computers without any user interaction or user permissions. It will also attempt to hide itself from virus scanning software and detection applications, making this one heck of a sneaky trojan, which we guess was kind of the point to begin with.

Designed to run on OS X 10.6 and 10.7, the trojan will continue to run in the background even after rebooting the computer. It has also been reported that if the Mac computer has root access, the trojan will then attempt to install additional components that will make detection harder. According to Integro, the trojan attempts to contact a specific IP address every 5 minutes to await instructions, although at the moment the trojan has yet to be spotted in the wild. Given the sneakiness of the Crisis trojan, we’re surprised that Integro has considered it to be a low level threat, but either way you should probably avoid unsavory or suspicious websites to begin with.

Demo Mac units at Apple’s retail stores might not be running OS X Mountain Lion due to some hiccups

So Apple has confirmed that OS X Mountain Lion will be released later today. For some Mac users, the decision as to whether they should upgrade from OS X Lion to OS X Mountain Lion is still one that they have yet to make. While it is a relatively inexpensive upgrade, we’re sure that many Mac users are comfortable with the way things are now. Well if you were thinking of popping down to your local Apple retail store to give OS X Mountain Lion a spin before deciding if you should upgrade, you might want to put that on hold for now.

The folks at 9to5 Mac have been tipped that due to some last minute issues with the equipment needed to image OS X Mountain Lion on Mac computers in the stores for demo, those hoping to try out OS X Mountain Lion on demo Mac computers will be out of luck. This by no means is delaying the actual launch, but rather the demo, so if you’re intent on upgrading your OS X today, you will still be able to do so.
