Intel rumored to release a new Thunderbolt chip next year

Intel ThunderboltIntel’s Thunderbolt was introduced last year and while it hasn’t caught on like wildfire (manufacturers are only using Thunderbolt interfaces in their high-end products), it looks like Intel could be ready to give it an upgrade. According to DigiTimes, the company plans to release an upgraded version of its Thunderbolt chip, codenamed Redwood Ridge, in the second quarter of 2013 together with the launch of its Haswell processors.

The new Thunderbolt chip is said to support 10Gbps data rate, DisplayPort v1.1a and DisplayPort v1.2 Redriver. In 2014, it is also said to be further upgrade to Falcon Ridge with transmission speeds of up to 20Gbps through 2 channels. No word on how true these rumors are, but take this information with a pinch of salt for now. Q2 2013 is still a long way to go anyway.

Apple’s Mac App Store guidelines require icons to be 1024 x 1024 in resolution

Just last month, Apple launched the Retina-capable MacBook Pro, making it the first laptop in their product lineup to feature a Retina display. Why only one? Well it could be that Apple was testing the market and seeing the response and based on the estimated shipping times, it certainly seems that many people can’t wait to get their hands on it. With that being said, it seems that Apple has started imposing a new guideline for app submissions to the Mac App Store and are now requiring that all app icons be for 1024×1024 in resolution, making them suited for the Retina display.

This was a guideline imposed on the iTunes App Store with the introduction of Retina display on the iPhone 4, and it looks like it is being imposed on the Mac App Store as well. We’re guessing that this is to cater for the current Retina display MacBook Pro and presumably future Mac products that will be getting the Retina display treatment as well.

Chromium browser for Raspberry Pi beta released

The Raspberry Pi is one tiny computer that has since taken the developer world by storm ever since it was introduced to the masses earlier this year, and for good reason, too. Enthusiasts need not fork out too much money, and with enough creativity and skill, they are able to build their very own working computer to look just like how they want it to be. Well, popular ChromiumOS developer Hexxeh has spent his fair share of time with the Raspberry Pi, where his most recent experiment would be a beta version of the Chromium browser that is said to be able to run on Raspbian images. Do bear in mind that this is not the full Chromium OS as that is still under the purview of the development phase, it ought to make life easier if one wants to browse through the treasure trove of information that we call the Internet on a $35 computer. You might want to consider overclocking your Raspberry Pi to get this up and running though without tearing your hair out while waiting.

Mac WiFi issues may come from OS X Lion power management

Mac OS X LionEvery once in a while, we hear about some WiFi issues with Mac OS. This doesn’t seem to affect many people, and we’ve never experienced it ourselves, but for those who do, they lose their Internet connection for no apparent reason. This can be the start of the road to hell for most users, as there is no easy fix or quick way to diagnose the problem.

Because Apple uses WiFi chips that are also widely used elsewhere, it is likely that the chips themselves work fine. However, any hardware must be controlled by a lot of software, and in this case the Mac OS X power management seems to be at the root of lost connectivity. If you are running Mac OS X Lion and are having this problem, this may help. (more…)

Microsoft Wedge Touch Mouse spotted in the wild?

Wedge Touch MouseIt looks like Microsoft has got a new lineup of computer accessories branded with the “Wedge” name. Earlier today, images of its Wedge mobile keyboard leaked and now to join it is an image of what is said to be a Wedge touch mouse. Featuring a minimalistic design just like the mobile keyboard, the Wedge Touch Mouse looks sleek and interestingly designed. It features no physical buttons just like the existing Touch Mouse, but it has a more radical shape that resembles a wedge.

Other than that, we don’t have any confirmation if this is the real deal, but its listing on Best Buy seems to support its existence. And if the Best Buy listing is accurate, we can expect the Wedge Touch Mouse to cost $60.99 when it goes on sale.
