Facebook fizzles while Google+ sizzles in customer service index

Google+, the social network from the Internet search giant (who has since gone on to expand the reach of their tentacles across many different businesses, most of them having something to do with the field of computing), has recently made its mark at the top of a customer-service index of social-media websites, where among the competitors include Facebook. On the other hand, Facebook actually hit a record low in the annual report. (more…)

Microsoft Office 365 announced

Office 365 logoIt looks like rumors about the new Microsoft Office being unveiled today turned out to be true. Following the webcast (which we are covering on our live blog at the time of writing), Microsoft officially announced on its website its next-generation productivity suite. Firstly, it’s not going to be called Office 15 or Office 2013 – instead, Microsoft has decided to go with Office 365. While not a huge departure from previous incarnations of Office, the latest version has a bunch of new features to make it go hand-in-hand with Windows 8. What sort of features, you ask? Namely – a touch-friendly UI.

Microsoft to announce Office 2013 today?

Office 2013Last week there was a rumor going on about Microsoft announcing its upcoming version of Office today (Office 15/Office 2013), and it looks like it might be spot on. According to reports online, Microsoft will be holding a webcast at 12 PM PDT where it will be announcing “news from Microsoft”. No information about the event has been released except that Steve Ballmer will be making an appearance so it should be some pretty important news, but thanks to a photograph posted on Weibo it looks like it’s going to be an Office-related event. The photograph (above) supposedly shows us the entrance to the event in San Francisco and  more importantly, the new “Office” logo.

The webcast can be streamed from Microsoft’s website, so be sure to check it out at noon PT/3PM ET if you’re interested in what’s going on. We’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Bliss – the most viewed photograph of all time?

Bliss Windows XPIf you’ve seen the photograph above before, don’t worry – you’re not the only one. According to reports online, over a billion people have seen this photograph since it was published back in 2002. For those of you wondering where you’ve come across the image, it’s been part of Windows XP’s Luna theme that came default with a lot of computers. The photograph, entitled Bliss, was taken when former National Geographic photographer Charles O’Rear was at a rest stop driving through the wine region of Napa Valley in California.

The photograph was sold to Microsoft at an undisclosed “extraordinary” price, and you could say the rest is history. If you’re interested in checking out more of the photographer’s work, you can head here. Honestly I always thought Bliss was a digitally created image and not a photograph – I guess I was wrong. How many of you are still using this photograph as your desktop wallpaper?

Kontron KTT30 Tegra 3 PC Mini-ITX Motherboard

Facebook post the undoing of 16 year old in Chicago murder case

You find all sorts of crazy stuff on social networks these days, where a recent fatal murder of a West Rogers Park man aged 62 was recorded on video, and subsequently, posted to Facebook. Apparently, the video of the incident was recorded on a teenager’s cellphone camera, at least according to officials in charge of investigations. Malik Jones, 16, from Chicago, was charged over the weekend with first-degree murder for the death of Delfino Mora, and he was held without bail by Cook County Circuit Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr.

Mora was a father of a dozen children, and he was collecting the cans in order to earn some money so that his family would be able to have a decent chance at life. It seemed that 15 years ago, an injury sustained by Mora left him unable to continue in his vocation as a construction worker, hence leading him to perform odd jobs here and there. It is rather weird for the video of the assault to be posted onto Facebook – it was as though mocking the long arm of the law’s reach which eventually grabbed Malik by the collar anyway. I hope that justice will be served in court, and this is one instance where Facebook is able to help local authorities in solving a crime.

Comcast purchases Microsoft’s 50% stake in MSNBC.com

Comcast is reported to have shelled out a cool $300 million to own Microsoft’s 50% stake in MSNBC.com, and this bit of news does not come across as a surprise since Comcast Corp. is the parent company of NBC, where this particular bit of purchase would mean that Comcast is now able to assume full control of the news website. This particular deal signals the end of slightly more than one and a half decade’s joint venture between Microsoft and NBCUniversal.

Jennifer Sizemore, editor-in-chief of NBCNews.com, mentioned in a letter, “Today we’re taking on a new name – NBCNews.com. While our name is changing, our commitment is not. The ties are deep, and untangling them will take at least two years.” I wonder whether the quality and experience of the website will change for the better in any way, or will everything remain status quo for the end user?

Intel Series 330 SSD reaches 240GB and dips below $1/GB

Intel has just announced that it is introducing a new 240GB version of its Series 330 solid state drive (SDD). At the same time, the company is lowering the maximum suggested price (MRSP) on previous models in the 330 Series, but also the 520 Series and 320 Series.

The new Series 330 240GB will come at $194 MRSP, but we’ll have to see if online prices get lower than this. With this offering, Intel breaks the $1/GB barrier, just like the industry predicted last year, and we expect pretty much every SSD manufacturer to get there by year’s end.

The good news is that this is not over. Moore’s law dictates that prices will continue to plunge, while capacity rises. In the meantime, expect more and more computers to use SSD drives to accelerate file access and as it stands, this is still one of the best upgrade that a computer can get. Don’t miss our Intel SSD 320 Series review.
