Microsoft to reveal Office 15 next week?

Microsoft Office logoMicrosoft’s Windows 8 will be coming out later this year, and not long after will be the next version of its popular productivity suite – Office (codenamed Office 15). Well, if you’re keen on finding out what improvements will be in this new iteration of Office, it looks like we’ll be able to find out next week. According to USA today’s sources, Microsoft will be officially unveiling Office 15 on Monday next week.

While Microsoft has released plenty of details about Windows 8, they’ve been pretty tight lipped about Office so we don’t really know what’s in store. However, you can expect it to be touch-friendly especially for Windows 8 tablets. Rumors have it that Office 15 will allow the editing of Adobe PDF documents and might even run on the iPad. Stay tuned next week for more details if the rumor turns out to be true. What would you like to see in Office 15?

Control a computer with your eyes

The brilliant Stephen Hawking certainly knows what he is talking about when it comes to physics, and do imagine just how much more he is able to achieve if he were to be fully healthy? I guess that is a rhetorical question, and do appreciate his immense contribution to the world of science. Those who suffer from various diseases or have physical conditions that restrict one’s movement to just the eyes, can finally be able to use their eyes to control a computer, even if the kind of parts used amount to just $35 thereabouts. The system is sensitive enough that under testing circumstances, test subjects managed to score within 20% of an able-bodied person right after a mere 10 minutes of practice.

This particular tracker will rely on a couple of video console cameras in addition to a pair of eyeglasses that require to be calibrated. After the calibration process, it is more or less be able to track the pupils in a precise manner, letting one control a cursor or move a paddle in the game of Pong. You can also “click” using the eye-mouse by winking, while there are other more precise adjustments which can calculate gaze depth. Interesting – hopefully the system will be miniaturized enough and come in an affordable package should it be commercialized.

Giada i53 is one power packed mini PC not to be trifled with

At one glance, the Giada i53 might not seem as though it can amount up to much, but in reality, this is a compact PC that sports an Ivy Bridge processor inside, coupled with a high performance GPU not to mention a wide range of connectivity that caters for office and home applications. I suppose it is not capable of handling all the high powered graphics found in many of today’s modern games, where the Giada i53 will be constructed around Intel’s Mobile HM76 Express chipset and Ivy Bridge technology platform. It will not take up too much juice either, since the Giada i53 sips a mere 35W of juice.

Other hardware specifications include 4GB RAM, with the choice of using Ivy Bridge i3 and i7 processors to suit your needs and budget. Apart from that, it can also handle full HD 1080P video and Intel HD Audio with 5.1 channel surround sound, a 500GB hard drive, and the ability to run on Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP and Linux operating systems. The ODROID-X is expected to ship at the end of July for $129 – a lot more than the Raspberry Pi but for what you can do with it, it’s not too bad.

Digg on sale for $500,000

How the mighty have fallen – Digg, one of the pioneers in social media which was valued at over $160 million in the past, is now selling for approximately $500,000 – which is far less than 0.5% of its lofty peak valuation. Three persons who are familiar with the deal claim that New York technology development firm Betaworks is the buyer. The reason for purchasing Digg? To make an attempt in reviving this news-sharing site. $500,000 can be said to be a sham by some, where the company previously managed to raise a cool $45 million from prominent investors such as Facebook investor Greylock Partners, LinkedIn Inc. founder Reid Hoffman, and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen.

I guess when it comes to the world of tech, it can be quite hard to tell the difference between a bubble and the real deal, and even if it were a bubble, it would be best to cash out when the going is good without letting emotion get in the way. Well, for $500,000, Betaworks will own a website that has a famous brand name, not to mention over 7 million eyes checking out the site each month as of May 2012, according to comScore’s results, of course.

I guess the popularity of sites like Facebook and Twitter have managed to “kill off” Digg effectively, but it would be interesting to see just how Digg’s redesign is going to position itself in the game once more.

Solid Gray Backpacks boast a different design

Storing your laptop with the right backpack is somewhat akin to finding the right pair of shoes for your feet. While many backpacks do have enough space to stash your laptop, there is just one “perfect” backpack out there for different users. Solid Gray offers a backpack with a clever design which has been specially cut and folded out of a single sheet of hi-tech plastic. The result of this? A crustacean-like super tough and yet lightweight hardshell, which is said to deliver quite the sufficient amount of protection against tough knocks and drops. The Solid Gray backpack cannot be said to be totally new in the market, as it was first unveiled to the world at the Dutch Design Week sometime late last year.

However, the Solid Gray Backpack has yet to hit the market officially Stateside, although it has been said that the first edition was sold out within a month. Since then, production has been increased with a worldwide launch to come. Would you be in line to pick one up for your precious new Ultrabook or MacBook Air?
