Do you think that Facebook has a penchant to do things quietly on the side? After all, it was reported earlier that Facebook did introduce a “Find Friends Nearby” feature on the quiet, and not only that, there were whispers of discontent across the Internet when Facebook started to change the email address displayed without getting permission from the user. Well, for those who missed out on the “Find Friends Nearby” feature, chances are you would have missed out on it completely, as it is no longer available. Perhaps this has something to do with the social networking giant being worried about the kind of privacy issues that might arise. (more…)

Apple beefs up security with Security Update for Mountain Lion Developer Preview 4
Posted in: Today's ChiliWith the recent malware attack on Macs a couple of months back, it seems that the illusion of Macs being immune to viruses and malware has been shattered. That being said, it seems that Apple is at the very least doing something about it, at least for its upcoming OS X Mountain Lion update. The Cupertino company has released a new Security Update for the Mountain Lion Developer Preview version that introduces a couple of new security features which will hopefully protect OS X users from future malware attacks.
According to the reports, the new update will now automatically check for security updates on a daily basis which will help keep OS X users on their toes and up to date with the latest virus definitions and protections. It will even come with the ability to install the updates automatically or when the user restarts their computer, thus saving users the trouble of installing the updates themselves. If you are running the Developer Preview 4, the update is available via the Mac App Store and will be a 1.16GB download.

Some MacBook Pros with Retina displays reportedly affected by ghosting issues
Posted in: Today's Chili
There have been recent reports that some MacBook Pro models with the Retina display are facing some ghosting issues. The good news is that these reports appear to be somewhat limited and small in nature, which means that we could just be looking at a bad batch of display panels here instead of a widespread problem. Either way if you’re planning on getting the MacBook Pro with Retina display, we guess it wouldn’t hurt if you kept an eye out for any issue, especially since the laptops are returnable within 14 days under the “no questions asked” warranty. Apple has acknowledged that there are some problems with some models of the MacBook Pros and Geniuses at the Apple retail stores have reportedly begun ordering replacement units, but given the popularity and high demand of these Retina display models, you might have to wait a couple of weeks before your replacement model arrives. In the meantime if you’d like a better idea of the problem, check out the video above or head on over to the Apple community forums. If you are able to look past this little hiccup, check out our full review of the Retina display MacBook Pro to see if this laptop is the one for you!

For those planning on getting their hands on Apple’s next-gen MacBook Pro with Retina display, Japanese site IT Media has released a report on the laptop and revealed just how hot it is when idling, watching video and when pushed to its limit. The image above also accompanies the report which is the thermal imaging of the MacBook Pro, showing at which parts of the laptop get the hottest and which remain the coolest, so if this is your first MacBook Pro and you’re looking to get a laptop cooler for it, you might want one that has its fans placed towards the back and center if you want to keep your MacBook Pro as cool as possible.
According to the website, they have found that when idling, the MacBook Pro maintained a temperature of 30.3C with the fans running at 30 decibels. However 15 minutes into watching a video, the temperatures rose to 35.1C, and even went up to 48.2C when pushed to its extremes, with fans running at an audible 46 decibels. More information on their testing can be found at their website, although you might need to translate it as it is written in Japanese.

PC case mods come in all shapes and sizes, but they typically return to metal casings as their choice of material. However in this instance, PC case modder Pirate has decided to go with a medium-density fiberboard, which was his attempt at avoiding having to buy a new desk or going to a metal working shop to get pieces custom made. Unfortunately fiberboard is hardly the best conductor for heat which is why a rather robust cooling system was needed. This resulted in a rig that utilized five fans – three exhaust, two intake, a radiator along with a liquid cooling system. If you think that this sounds a bit overboard, well it seems like his efforts have paid off as the system sits at roughly 88F (31C) with ambient temperatures around 79F (26C), which admittedly is pretty good.
As far as the hardware specs of his rig is concerned, it sports an Intel Core i5-2500k processor, a Radeon HD 7950 GPU with a water cooling block, and three Dell UltraSharp monitors in an eyefinity setup. This is a pretty cool setup and if you’d like to see how he put it all together, pop on over to his website (warning: image heavy!) for the details.

Google Maps, watch out! Microsoft has just announced that they will be throwing in 165TB of new images into Bing Maps, the software giant’s reply to the world of navigation. It is said that this particular data dump is the “largest satellite release to date” for Bing, and the entirety of it is not lost on us. In fact, Microsoft pressed the matter further by saying, “In fact, this release is larger than all of our past Aerial releases combined!”
Just how much data does 165TB amount up to? We are talking about new imagery over North America, South America, Africa, Australia, Europe, and Asia – which equals to nearly a whopping 38 million square kilometers. The aerial images snapped comprises of a mixture of those taken by satellites or aircraft, in addition to Global Ortho photography. You can say that plenty has happened since Bing launched its Global Ortho Project a year ago, and we do not think that Microsoft intends to stop working on making Bing Maps better in the immediate future.

The person whom you see in the image above is Stanford computer scientist Andrew Ng, who is seated beside an image of a cat which a neural network actually taught itself to identify, now how about that? The thing is, the amount of computing power required to achieve a seemingly simple exercise is nothing to sneeze at – we are talking about 16,000 computers after all. Google’s highly secretive X laboratory that is famous for previous inventions such as a self-driving car and augmented reality glasses, also housed a relatively tight knit group of researchers who started working on a human brain simulation for the past several years already.
When presented with 10 million digital images which were harvested from YouTube videos, this ‘brain’ from Google started to perform a search for cats, which is not too uncommon among humans either. The Internet, after all, is full of cat videos, but the results of this simulation surprised the team as it performed in a far superior manner compared to other efforts, where the accuracy level has doubled in terms of recognizing objects out of 20,000 distinct items listed. Just how will this brain simulator change the way the world works for the better? Only time can – and will, tell.
I cannot help but think of the expression as to how there is more than one way to skin a cat. In this case, there are 16,000 ways to recognize a cat – and each of them is a computer.
