Researchers Listen To Computer CPU Sounds In Order To Crack Encryption Code

Researchers Listen To Computer CPU Sounds In Order To Crack Encryption CodeThey say that a chain is as strong as its weakest link, and when it comes to cracking the encryption code of a computer, a bunch of researchers have made a rather startling discovery. What they did was to listen to the different sounds that a computer’s CPU made, before using that data in order to crack open the computer, which theoretically speaking, would allow even the world’s toughest encryption to be cracked wide open.

4096-bit RSA happens to be one of the most secure encryption algorithms worldwide, but researchers Daniel Genkin, Adi Shamir (co-creator of the algorithm itself) and Eran Tromer enlisted the help of a microphone in order to tune in to the sounds a computer’s CPU whenever it decrypts data. The sound is the result of the CPU regulating its voltage, with each sound emitted to represent a certain RSA key. Once you understand the RSA system of encryption, it is a simple matter of cracking the code in order to obtain full access to the data. RSA happens to be the only encryption method to be tested, and if it could be cracked, less secure methods would not be able to stand a chance either, using the same principle. Security and privacy issues, first world problems.

Google Fined $1.23 Million In Spain For Breaking Data Law

Google Fined $1.23 Million In Spain For Breaking Data LawTechnology giant Google has just been slapped with a $1.23 million fine (900,000 Euros) by Spain’s privacy watchdog, where they have been deemed to have broken Spain’s data protection law after merging personal information from its various online services while not informing in a clear and precise manner on how Google will be making use of such data. Of course, $1.23 million is definitely a drop in the bucket for Google considering how they currently boast of a market capitalisation of more than $350 billion. Still, this does show how there are concerns across the Old World about the amount of personal data which is being held in foreign jurisdictions in what is better known as “cloud” storage services.

    iStarUSA BPN-DE Drive Cage Review

iStarUSA BPN DE Drive Cage ReviewThose building their own PC have to go through a sea of PC components that is often not easy to navigate, not because the specs are hard to read, but because it is virtually impossible to form an opinion on the build quality of PC accessories based on what’s available online. When I started shopping for a drive cage for a new PC I’m building I wanted to have a drive cage that was neat and solidly built. After some research I zeroed in on this particular iStarUSA BPN-DE340SS (DE stands for “dove eye”) so I’m putting this review together so that others may benefit from the experience gathered with this purchase. iStar USA also has bigger and smaller versions of the same design.

Mac Pro Shipping Times Slip To February 2014

Mac Pro Shipping Times Slip To February 2014Despite its rather dear price tag of $2,999, Apple’s Mac Pro appears to be doing quite well as there have been reports that the computer has recently managed to sell out its initial batch of shipments. The Mac Pro’s pre-orders had gone live just yesterday and according to the shipping estimates at that time, it was expected that it would begin shipping on the 30th of December. However it turns out that we had underestimated the computer’s popularity as Apple’s online store now lists the Mac Pro’s estimated shipping time for some time in February, suggesting that if you weren’t quick enough, you’d have to wait a couple of months before you could get your hands on the device.

Some have speculated that the reason behind the delay and limited availability could be due to the fact that the Mac Pro is being built in Austin, Texas. Perhaps Apple’s factory has not caught up to speed yet, unlike Apple’s partners over in Asia who have probably gotten used to piecing together many Apple products over the years. Another reason could be that Apple had underestimated the demand for the new Mac Pros, but either way it looks like would-be customers are in for a wait.

New Mac Pro Gets The Unboxing Treatment

With Apple’s latest Mac Pro coming in with a price tag of at least $2,999, and we’re hearing that a fully specced Mac Pro could cost $14,000, safe to say that this is a computer not everyone will want to, or be able to, get their hands on. That being said, ever wonder what it might be like to open up the box of a computer you might not be getting anytime soon? Well thanks to the folks at FCP.co, they have posted a video on YouTube in which they unbox the brand new Mac Pro in front of our eyes.

As expected with Apple packaging, there is nothing in there which is unnecessary, save for a moulded piece of foam which is there to help protect the Mac Pro from small bumps and knocks along the way. We have to admit that while the price tag is a bit hard to swallow, the design of the Mac Pro is beautiful, albeit somewhat controversial. It is not targeted at the casual user but the working professional who might require said specs for music, audio, video, or graphical processing. Pre-orders of the computer have gone live and Apple expects to begin shipping Mac Pro units by the 30th of December. If you have a few minutes to spare, perhaps this is an unboxing video you’ll want to watch.

Apple Releases Firmware Update For New Mac Pros

Apple Releases Firmware Update For New Mac ProsApple’s latest workstation, the Mac Pro, has recently gone up for pre-order and is expected to begin shipping on the 30th of December, but it would seem as though Apple has already discovered a few bugs in its new product that they have since released a firmware for, meaning that if you are a soon-to-be proud owner of a Mac Pro, keep in mind that there will be a firmware update waiting to be downloaded once you have setup and connected your computer to the internet.

The update is the Mac Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.0 and was released just recently and weighs in at around 5MB, making it a small but recommended update as Apple claims that the update will help improve system reliability during the rebooting process. The update is also said to resolve an issue related to memory self-test, and will also aid in improving graphics power management when using Boot Camp.

The latest Mac Pro is the long-awaited successor to its predecessor which remain relatively unchanged for a couple of years. Its design, while unique, is somewhat controversial, along with its price tag where Apple is asking for $2,999 for the base model, making it a rather expensive purchase.

    Microsoft Project Siena App Released

Microsoft Project Siena App ReleasedThe folks over at Microsoft has introduced a new app that is known as Project Sienna, and it looks set to be a staple app. What is the whole point of Project Siena? It is meant to assist you in the creation of apps, where within the app itself, you can then publish it over to the Microsoft Store without having to fork out a single cent. How does Project Siena work? Download and install it (the download link is at the end of the story), and after launching it with some technical know how, you will then be able to churn out your very first app in a matter of minutes.

Those who have had experience with Visual Basic before should not feel as though it is out of place, where the app will be somewhat similar in nature, and assuming you are also familiar with Excel, Project Siena should not be too hard to work with since the expressions are said to be similar in nature if you want to hook up to your data. Project Siena’s targets include business experts and analysts, although it can also be used by anyone who happens to want to find an easy way to create apps which will be able to gain access to curated content via external streams. Microsoft Talks Up Bing Future

Microsoft Talks Up Bing FutureIs there a future for Microsoft’s Bing? The answer is of course, a resounding yes! In fact, it was not too long ago when Microsoft rolled out a Bing Maps preview edition for Windows 8.1 users, where users were able to enjoy various features including full 3D photographic maps for 70 worldwide cities among others. Well, it seems that there are more changes that are in the pipeline for Bing Maps down the road.

Apparently, Bing Maps intends to enhance one’s mapping experiences a whole lot more in the future, with a vision for maps where everything will be annotated with useful information, among them including just what buildings are called, the kind of stores that are located within, a way to get in touch with such stores, as well as the time that the stores are open. The additional and deeper level of integration into maps will hopefully make digital maps a whole lot more useful compared to what is currently offered, but it does not sound as though this highly ambitious plan will be introduced anytime in the near future. Microsoft did state at the end though, “Moving forward, you will see us mapping more of everything – both the web and the real world.” [Press Release]
