Apple iBeacon Deployed To 254 Stores To Help Guide Shoppers

Those who have ventured into an Apple Store know how challenging it can be to navigate through as there are usually a ton of products on several tables available at the entrance, making the process of buying a new Lightning charging cable difficult to carry out on your own. You could actually talk to an Apple Store employee, but Apple knows how much we all hate any form of human interaction, so they are implementing a new service that will help guide shoppers through their store.  (more…)

Microsoft Launches Another Scroogled Campaign Against The Chromebook

Microsoft’s Scroogled campaign is fast gaining notoriety for poking fun at Google and their products, with the previous Scroogled campaign criticizing Google’s Chromebooks for essentially being worthless due to its inability to perform without an internet connection. Now Microsoft is back with another Scroogled video, and it looks like Microsoft is not done slamming the Chromebook just yet. Taking to Venice Beach, Ben the PC Guy went around the area asking passerby’s what they thought of the Chromebook, especially when it could not function without internet, and recording the reactions of the public in the process.

While it is true that Chromebook does rely on the internet for a lot of its functions, Google has recently introduced several offline features, such as for Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Docs just to name a few. For those who are looking to use Chromebooks as a productivity tool and might not necessarily have access to stable internet, those offline features should be more than enough to get the job done, but obviously for those who want the full experience, we suppose that’s the trade-off. Could it be that Microsoft sees Google and the Chromebook as a threat? Like we said if you’re after simple productivity, Chromebooks priced at $299 are hard to ignore.

Linutop 5 Fanless Mini Linux Desktop

Linutop 5 Fanless Mini Linux DesktopWe did hear about the Jetpack from PiixL that allowed a pretty high end computer to be installed and placed right behind your flat screen TV in your living room, squeezing a decent level of performance out of something so slim. Well, this time around, small too, will be the main theme here, except that the Linutop 5 fanless Linux-powered mini desktop will not share a similar level of processing firepower.

For sure, its small size will allow it to sip under 14 watts of power, where it will be able to run Ubuntu Linux as the operating system of choice, but strangely enough, the Linutop 5 seemed to have remained stuck in a time capsule, being not much better compared to the model that was launched two and a half years back, but it sure is better than the Linutop 3. Basically, the Linutop 5 would come in the form of a low-power, fanless computer that will ship with Linux right out of the box, boasting of double the amount of RAM and storage of the Linutop 5. As for its processor, it will still chug along to the now outdated Intel Atom N270 processor. I guess you could more or less call this a mini desktop that only a Linux fan would be able to love.

Thecus N2310 NAS Sips On Just 5W Of Power

Thecus N2310 NAS Sips On Just 5W Of PowerIn this day and age, the total amount of information that we have in our slew of devices can add up to staggering values, so much so that it is virtually impossible to keep track of it all after a while. You would need plenty of discipline as well as enough resources and physical space to start cataloging those 1TB hard drives by the computer. Well, cheap and feature rich storage devices are always in demand, so you might want to check out the Thecus N2310 NAS that has just arrived in the US as part of your potential purchases.

Just what kind of goodies will the Thecus N2310 NAS bring to the table? For starters, it will come with a gigabit Ethernet port, a single USB 2.0 port, and of course, just to keep up with the rest of the times, one USB 3.0 port to go. Needless to say, those would be the kind of features that we would have expected it to arrive right out of the box, including a built-in BitTorrent client and RAID support. One good thing about the Thecus N2310 NAS would be its energy efficiency, where Thecus claims it will sip a mere 5W of power. If you were to translate it to the total amount of electricity that you had to pay for it, it would cost a mere $5.03 annually on average to run it at home. $170 certainly sounds like an absolute bargain for the Thecus N2310 NAS.

Bing Maps Preview For Windows 8.1 Released

Bing Maps Preview For Windows 8.1 Released

To preview the changes that Microsoft has planned for its mapping service, it released the Bing Maps Preview app for Windows 8.1 today. The company says that this app is a first step in “introducing a new way to explore the world.” The app has been built from the ground up, according to Microsoft, and that they have focused on detail, scale and clarity. To ensure that users are provided with the highest quality imagery possible, Microsoft is showcasing a focused list of more than 70 cities around the globe just to let users know what’s to come from Bing Maps in the future.

Since the app was built for Windows 8.1, it takes advantage of features like Snapview and Windows notification, it also has Live Tile support. Users can explore places of interest, routes and landmarks over the cityscape, they will also have the option to switch to Streetside viewing mode in selected areas. “Bubble view” will provide a preview of the Streetside view while maintaining a broad perspective of the entire map, so basically as the user rotates the map, their view turns with it. In-app search is also present, allowing users to search for a restaurant or a venue and immediately get a route overlay. Favorite routes can also be saved in the Bings Maps Preview app and if certain times are specified, the app will automatically display traffic notification along those routes at the provided time even if the app isn’t active. The app is available for download right now in Windows Store.
