Low Cost iMac, 12-Inch Retina MacBook Air Expected This Year

Low Cost iMac, 12 Inch Retina MacBook Air Expected This Year

Last month we picked up a post from an often reliable Chinese forum source who claimed that Apple is working on a 12-inch Retina MacBook Air. The notebook is reportedly going to be ultra slim partly because it won’t have a fan, and is expected to have a high resolution display apart from a buttonless trackpad. This has been reiterated once again, and now we’re also hearing about the possibility of a low cost iMac.

The predictions come from famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who reiterates most of what we heard about 12-inch Retina MacBook Air last month. Kuo was actually the first to predict a 12-inch MacBook Air late last year. It is said to “redefine notebook user experience.” Its unclear what would become of the existing models, which haven’t been refreshed with Retina displays so far.

Not much is known about the low cost iMac for now. Kuo just says that its coming later this year, and that it will help Apple compete with the likes of HP and Lenovo particularly in markets across Asia. Technical specifications aren’t available at this point in time, and it is also not known what cuts Apple might make to keep the cost down.

Both HP and Lenovo released a new crop of All-in-One desktop PCs this year, the new models were first unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2014 in Las Vegas back in January.

EU Court: Holland Ban On Free Copyrighted Movie And Music Downloads

EU Court: Holland Ban On Free Copyrighted Movie And Music Downloads It seems that folks in the Netherlands (or Holland, for example) no longer have the right to download copyrighted movies and music for free even when it is for personal use. Apparently, the Netherlands government had propped things up in such a way that there is a “piracy levy” on selected products in order to please the film and music industries. The European Court of Justice recently ruled that the country’s “piracy levy” is now illegal, as it might result in the encouragement of a greater level of distribution of pirated copyrighted content.

Reset Your Passwords After Heartbleed Bug Makes The News

Reset Your Passwords After Heartbleed Bug Makes The NewsI am quite sure that many of us have already read about the Heartbleed bug that has raised quite a sheer amount of panic among some members of the populace, although cooler heads have also prevailed in the process. In fact, some technology firms have urged folks to make changes to their passwords – all of them, after stumbling across this major security flaw. Heartbleed basically allows one to access data that was previously thought to be protected by OpenSSL, the encryption software that is used by internet services across a broad spectrum.

Professor David Stupples of City University have urged folks to make changes to their passwords when it comes to online services including emails and of course, banking. Yahoo blogging platform Tumblr too, has not ignored the gravity of such a bug, having advised the masses to “change your passwords everywhere – especially your high-security services like email, file storage and banking”.

Who would have thought that a product which was used to safeguard data could actually have been compromised, resulting in the ability to “eavesdrop” digitally? What was meant to protect is now a threat, so it would be a good time to think of the many alphanumeric passwords for you to use with your numerous online accounts for the umpteeth time. Let’s face it, gone are the days when JohnDoer0xX!11! can be your password that will last for the next 20 years.

    Dropbox Introduces Carousel Gallery

Dropbox Introduces Carousel GalleryApps have taken over our lives these days to a great extent, and no longer do you need to trouble yourself with a physical photo album for your stored memories, as everything has gone digital now. New apps might make it a snap to capture photos, but to actually archive and catalog those is another challenge altogether. Dropbox intends to help you out with the introduction of Carousel, which happens to be a gallery for all the photos and videos from your life.

Carousel would combine the photos within your Dropbox alongside those snapshots that were captured on your phone, where it will automatically back up new shots as you take them. Carousel would then go ahead and sort out all of these memories by event, allowing you to return to the right time and date if you need to pull out something from the past. What makes it different from other mobile galleries would be the fact that your Carousel’s size will not be constrained by the space on your handset.

Apart from that, Carousel also offers the ability to carry out private conversations, as they believe that such memories are meant to be shared among your close and loved ones. This lets you share hundreds of photos without taking any more time than it would by sending a single text. You can pick it up for the iOS and Android platforms.[Press Release]

Mailbox For Android And Mac (Beta) Launched

Mailbox For Android And Mac (Beta) LaunchedIf you’re an iOS user converting to Android, there are probably some iOS-exclusive apps that you might miss, one of them being Mailbox. Well the good news is that if you were wondering when the app would arrive for Android, wonder no more because Mailbox has since launched for Android is available for download for free via Google Play.

The app will function just like its iOS counterpart and for those unfamiliar with the app, Mailbox is essentially another email client that sports a very clean and simple interface. It makes use of gestures, like swiping, to either delete a message, archive it, or set it to snooze to remind you to check up on it later.

The app has also received a new feature called auto-swipe which is basically where the app will learn your preferences and actions and will be able to snooze or archive messages automatically to help you become more efficient at managing your email. Personally I’d rather manage my emails myself but for those who love automation, perhaps this is a feature that might be of interest to you.

This feature will take advantage of Dropbox’s cloud services to help sync your preferences across devices, so if you use Mailbox on other devices like tablets or a second smartphone, you won’t have to teach it all over again.

The developers have also announced that Mailbox will finally be arriving for the Mac albeit in beta form and if you’re interested in participating in the beta, hit up Mailbox’s website for the details.

Apple’s Roadmap For 2014, According To An Analyst

Apples Roadmap For 2014, According To An AnalystGiven Apple’s secretive nature, we can only speculate and assume what Apple has planned for release this year, and the next, and so on. However according to KGI Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, he has recently put together a slide showing what he expects Apple’s roadmap to be for 2014.

According to Kuo, he expects that towards the end of Q2 2014, Apple will introduce an upgrade to the iMac, possibly at low cost. During Q3, he expects that both the iPad Air and the iPad mini will be getting an upgrade which dispels rumors that Apple could be killing off the iPad mini.

During Q3 Kuo also expects that Apple will launch the rumored iWatch and that it could come in two sizes. One will be of the 1.3-inch display variety and the other of a 1.5-inch variety, and both will come with a flexible AMOLED display. Q3 is also when the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is expected to make its debut.

Come Q4, Kuo thinks that Apple will be announcing an upgrade to its Apple TV, which we guess is due for an upgrade. The rumored 12-inch MacBook is also expected to make its debut early Q4 along with MacBook Pro upgrades as well which is interesting as Apple typically makes computer-related announcements at WWDC. Last but not least is the 5.5-inch iPhone which he thinks could debut towards the end of the  year.

We should note that this isn’t the official roadmap and it is one put together by an analyst who thinks that this is what Apple has planned for the rest of the year. However Kuo has been pretty reliable in the past when it comes to providing insider knowledge regarding Apple’s products, so perhaps there might be some truth to his claims, but to be on the safe side, you might want to take it with a grain of salt for now.

PC Shipments See 4.4% YOY Decline, According To IDC

PC Shipments See 4.4% YOY Decline, According To IDCIs the demand for the PC starting to slip in the face of smartphones, tablets, and Chromebooks as viable alternatives? Well it would seem so because according to a recent report from the IDC, they have reported that worldwide PC shipments totaled 73.4 million units in the first quarter of 2014. This is actually a 4.4% decline year-on-year which does not bode well for PC manufacturer.

However it seems that despite PC shipments starting to slip, IDC has found that Lenovo is still maintaining their number one position in worldwide PC shipments with shipments in Q1 totalling 12.9 million. They are followed by HP who are pretty close at 12.55 million, followed by Dell which is a pretty distant third at 9.8 million. Acer and ASUS also made the list at fourth and fifth place respectively but it seems even their combined might does not even reach Lenovo’s numbers. (more…)
