Flickr Photo Books Service Launched

Flickr Photo Books Service LaunchedIt is not surprising to hear that Flickr has finally taken the step to do something that small startups had long ventured into – the creation of photo books. After all, Flickr is a repository of memories for many people, whether it is a vacation or a family outing, organizing your photos online on Flickr is but a snap. This digital photo sharing site has finally decided to make the jump into the world of physical photos printed out.

The new Flickr Photo Books service is said to be able to “analyze your photos and intelligently crop, position, and place them automatically”, where turning a digital collection into a physical one is as simple as a solitary click. All you need to do (apart from having some photos uploaded over to Flickr, of course) would be to make use of the provided product editor, before selecting the photo set that you would like to take advantage of. This means you are able to edit, crop, zoom, and position photos in a manual manner, or to sit back and let Flickr’s system do all the heavy lifting. All Flickr Photo Books will come with a maximum 240 page count, where they will arrive at your doorstep in 11″ x 8.5″ glossy hardcover glory. The asking price of a single book of 20 pages? $35, while additional pages will cost you another $0.50 each. Do expect a shipping time of 5 to 7 business days after placing your order, and unfortunately for the rest of the world, this service remains limited to those living in the continental United States.

Dropbox Figures Out It Is Worth $8 Billion

Dropbox Figures Out It Is Worth $8 BillionI would suppose that as a company, the suits at the top would always seek out the best result in any deal. Dropbox is no different, either, although the company might have just raised an eyebrow or two with plans to raise additional money (touted to be in the region of at least $250 million in the weeks to come by those who claim to be in the know), while sporting a valuation that stands at a minimum of $8 billion – which would be more than double in its previous round that closed in October a couple of years ago.

Ana Andreescu, a Dropbox spokeswoman, when enquired concerning the funding round, said, “What we can say is that with over 200 million users and 4 million businesses, Dropbox has continued and strong momentum.” Do you think that $8 billion is thinking too highly of itself as a company? Dropbox CEO and co-founder Houston was touted to have been bragging recently that the company has not spent all of the money it raised in the previous round of funding, but could make do with a cash infusion in order to bring its growing ambitions to new heights. What do you think of Dropbox and its self evaluation? $8 billion certainly sounds like a whole lot, won’t you say so?

Google Maps Image That Depicts Murder Investigation Removed

Google Maps Image That Depicts Murder Investigation RemovedGoogle has certainly done its fair bit to make the world a whole lot smaller, at least in terms of a virtual environment. In fact, we are now able to check out the canals of Venice using Google Street View, but when it comes to Google Maps, there are some images that simply should not be shown. One of them would be an image of an alleged murder investigation, and it is comforting to know that Google had quickly agreed to remove and replace said satellite photo in Google Maps.

The particular image depicts the scene where 14-year-old Kevin Barrera was found shot and dead, located near several railway tracks in Richmond, California, four years ago. In this photo, there were also police officers who happened to be doing their jobs, investigating the gruesome crime scene. The victim’s father, Jose Barrera, stumbled upon this Google Maps photo just last week before he made a request to Google to remove this particular image. Brian McClendon, vice president of Google Maps, said, “Our hearts go out to the family of this young boy. Since the media first contacted us about the image, we’ve been looking at different technical solutions. Google has never accelerated the replacement of updated satellite imagery from our maps before, but given the circumstances we wanted to make an exception in this case.”

Toshiba Dynabook KIRA V634 Boasts Of 22 Hour Battery Life

Toshiba Dynabook KIRA V634 Boasts Of 22 Hour Battery LifeWhen the MacBook Air from Apple was first introduced to the world, just about everyone was more than impressed with it. In fact, the extreme thin profile coupled with exceptional battery life (back then) did get Windows-powered notebook users asking just when will they be able to enjoy something like that? Good to know that the Ultrabook scene has grown since then, coming up with some decent designs to date. Toshiba’s latest foray into the Ultrabook market has resulted in this latest Kirabook which has been rated to feature up to 22 hours of battery life on a single charge, now how about that?

Of course, one would need to see just what kind of pace has the Kirabook V654 been put through before it could achieve that phenomenal battery life rating. I am quite sure that Intel’s new Haswell chips has something to do with it. The new KIRA V654 will feature a 13” display at 1,366 x 768 resolution, tipping the scales at 1.12kg. There is also a high-resolution model just in case you need to work with higher resolutions on the go, all of it running on Windows 8 as the operating system of choice. Expect the KIRA V654 to hit Japan this November 20th from approximately $1,446 onward.

Google Has To Cough Up $17 Million In Fines Due To Anti-Tracking Snafu With Safari

Google Has To Cough Up $17 Million In Fines Due To Anti Tracking Snafu With SafariGoogle, the most popular search engine to date, is also a company that is sitting on piles of cash, so to hear that they have to pay $17 million in fines because they have bypassed Safari’s anti-tracking feature by placing tracking cookies on users’ machines without prior permission, is but a drop in the bucket for them. Still, that is a lot of money to most people, and this bit of news was recently announced. As part of the final settlement with a Federal Court, Google has to fork out $17 million, in addition to a separate FTC fine of $22.5 million from last year, to 37 states in the US as well as the District of Columbia.

Google is adamant that they did not gather what it calls “private information” using the cookies, touting that the entire shebang was a mistake because of a bug in Safari. The court was not affected by any of these, considering how Apple had explicitly blocked third-party cookies as a default security feature, unless the user decides otherwise to turn it off. Google claimed that such cookie-based web features still managed to get through, hence resulting in this loophole which was “inadvertently” exploited. Well, I think this is a lesson well learnt, and hope that nothing of this sort repeats itself down the road regardless of the company.
