HP Chromebook 11 Being Yanked From Best Buy Shelves And Elsewhere

HP Chromebook 11 Being Yanked From Best Buy Shelves And Elsewhere

Just last month Google announced a new Chromebook, the HP Chromebook 11. It has an 11.6 inch IPS display, dualcore Samsung Exynos processor, 2GB RAM and a price tag of $279. Google touted the product as an ultra-affordable laptop which is also small and light. Powered by Chrome OS, it came with 100GB of Google Drive storage for two years, which would have been a life saver given the fact that the laptop only has 16GB of local storage. Sales of the Chromebook have apparently been stopped and no reason has surfaced as yet. The Verge reports that Best Buy has ordered employees to remove the Chromebook 11 from shelves, and that stores should stop selling it “effective immediately.” Best Buy has also removed the listing from its website without giving a reason.

The HP Chromebook 11 is also sold by Google and HP through their stores, but it is no longer available at either store. Amazon has stopped directly selling it as well, saying that customers have told them that “there may be something wrong” with their inventory of the HP Chromebook 11. Google, HP or Best Buy have yet to comment on why the Chromebook has mysteriously been made unavailable for purchase. We’ll update you when word comes in.

    Microsoft Drops Employee Ranking System

Microsoft Drops Employee Ranking SystemManaging machines is an easier task than managing humans, as any human resource manager will be able to tell you. We have now received word that Microsoft has decided to stop using its employee ranking system, which is a system that forced managers to provide a set proportion of employees a poor review, never mind just how well they have performed, there will always be a bunch at the bottom of the pile. It is this very system where the blame has been pinpointed for hampering not only innovation, but it has also pitted employees against one another.

Employees picked up this good news in an email from Lisa Brummel, Microsoft’s executive vice president of human resources. The system has been called “stack ranking,” and it has also become more or less an emblem or example of what is not right where Microsoft’s corporate culture is concerned. In fact, employees have even described it to be the most destructive process within the company, where it has been blamed for crippling Microsoft’s ability to innovate. Hopefully this move will not come too late to help Microsoft turn the innovation boat around to calmer waters. Hopefully, we will see more innovative products from Microsoft in the near future after this.

Historic Apple II DOS Source Code Can Now Be Downloaded

Historic Apple II DOS Source Code Can Now Be DownloadedDon’t you just love history? It chronicles the past so that we have a better idea as to which particular road which we should tread in the future, and the ones to avoid as well. This time, we are pleased to bring you news that a collaboration between two vintage computer museums has seen the Apple II DOS source code being made available to the masses. This can be seen as the Holy Grail for some, where it has been regarded to be the starting point of Apple. What you see above is Apple’s agreement with Shepardson Microsystems for Apple II DOS.

The Computer History Museum, working alongside the DigiBarn Computer Museum, have posted the Apple II disk operating system for non-commercial use. Needless to say, before this can happen, Apple has already been approached for their consent to the publication since the code still remains under the ownership of Apple. Just a little bit of background information for those who are new to the scene to appreciate the source code all the more – Apple II happened to be a fully-assembled personal computer that carried a slew of advanced features including a built-in BASIC programming language, being compatible with an external monitor, as well as different modes of input. Other documents related to the software include schematics and business agreements.

Stuxnet Did Not Infect The International Space Station (ISS)

Stuxnet Did Not Infect The International Space Station (ISS)Much news has broken about Stuxnet, a virus which was credited for sabotaging the Iranian uranium enrichment program, has found its way to the International Space Station, or the ISS for short. It was said that Stuxnet had gone rogue, especially when it has the ability to infect other machines via USB or optical media instead of the usual modus operandi of an Internet connection. Just in case you think that an apocalyptic scenario is about to unfold, fret not – the ISS has not been infected by Stuxnet, and all of the earlier reports have been blown out of proportion due to sensationalism.

Apparently, Kaspersky had never mentioned that Stuxnet had infected the International Space Station, but he did present a couple of separate and unrelated anecdotes. The first of the two was about non-specific malware being carried onboard the space station by astronauts, while the other had something to do with Stuxnet infecting a Russian nuclear-facility network. Kaspersky was cited to have said, “The space guys, from time to time, are coming with USBs, which are infected. I’m not kidding. I was talking to Russian space guys and they said, ‘Yeah, from time to time, there are [computer] viruses on the space station.’”

NASA was also quoted as saying, “Virus was never a threat to any of the computers used for cmd and cntl [command and control] and no adverse effect on ISS Ops [operations].” There you go, right from the horse’s mouth itself, the ISS is safe from any virus infection so you won’t find any rogue satellites causing havoc worldwide.

Gigabyte P35K Is An Extremely Light Gaming Laptop

Gigabyte P35K Is An Extremely Light Gaming LaptopA gaming laptop can be quite an oxymoron when you think about it. Since laptops are naturally not all that powerful as compared to a desktop, to have a gaming class laptop would mean bulking it up with the right processor as well as video graphics card, so that would in turn, affect the portability of the laptop. Gigabyte hopes to have run into a viable solution with what they call the ‘world’s lightest’ 15” Haswell gaming laptop in the form of the Gigabyte P35K.

Just how light is it? Apparently, the Gigabyte P35K will tip the scales at just 2.16kg, where it measures a mere 21mm thin. Underneath the hood, you will find an Intel Haswell Core i7 processor, ensuring that the P35K will target gamers as well as 3D designers who are constantly moving around. I know that in this day and age, most of us would work on Ultrabooks that are super thin and light in comparison, but the P35K is powerful enough to run the latest games with its NVIDIA Geforce GTX 765M graphics card that has 2GB of GDDR5 RAM, and is touted to be able to surpass the 3DMark advantage score of P17,800 thanks to its “Ultra Boost” overclocking technology. Other hardware specifications include a 15” Full HD display, enough space to carry up to two 512GB mSATA SSD and two 1TB HDD, and a sandblasted aluminium matte finish with a starting price point of £1,199.99.

HP Omni 10 Carries Its Own Weight Fairly Well

HP Omni 10 Carries Its Own Weight Fairly WellHP is still in the computing game, just in case you were wondering, as they have not resigned themselves to just churning out scientific calculators. In fact, there is a new tablet from the folks over at HP, where it is known as the HP Omni 10, and it has already appeared on the Microsoft Store which presents the HP Omni 10 in all of its Windows 8.1 glory, including a list of hardware specifications. For instance, it will arrive with a Gorilla Glass 3-protected 10.1” 1080p display that will be powered by one of Intel’s most recent and advanced ultramobile SoCs, which is the Atom Z3770 that will be based on the silicon slinger’s Silvermont 22nm architecture.

The Bay Trail chipsets could very well be Intel’s own bid to pave their way into the mobile space, So far, there are preliminary tests of the tablet version of the SoC that has proven itself to be rather worthy in terms of its CPU, although its GPU performance is nothing much to shout about. The Z3770 will arrive in a quad-core configuration that has cores which run at 1.5GHz, although it can be “powered” up to 2.4GHz when required. Other hardware specifications include 2GB RAM, a microSD memory card slot for up to 32GB of storage, an 8-megapixel autofocus camera at the back and a 2-megapixel front facing shooter, a micro HDMI slot, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity. It will retail for $399 for the 32GB model.

Windows XP Home Deadline Extended for ULCPC’s

This article was written on April 04, 2008 by CyberNet.

destroy xp pro Last year Microsoft decided that it would be smart to continue offering Windows XP for sale until June 30th, 2008. That way consumers and businesses who didn’t want to be an early adopter of Vista had an alternative available. As that deadline approaches a petition was started by InfoWorld earlier this year to save XP again, and as of last week it had accumulated over 106,000 signatures. But Microsoft made it clear yesterday that in just a few months Windows XP will be cut… kind of.

Windows XP will be no longer available after June 30th, 2008 with the exception of ultra low-cost personal computers (ULCPC’s). These computers are becoming rather popular (such as the Asus Eee PC), but they don’t have enough requirements to run Vista. Here’s what Microsoft had to say about it:

Customers and partners have made it clear to us that Windows is the preferred operating system for ULCPC buyers, just as it is for mainstream PC users.  That’s why we are extending direct OEM sales of Windows XP Home for ULCPCs so that they can preinstall Windows on these devices through the later of June 30, 2010 or one year after the general availability of the next version of the Windows operating system.  While Windows Vista provides many benefits, including an easier and more secure user experience, Windows XP Home provides an effective solution on these devices from a performance and cost perspective.

You’ll notice that Microsoft made sure to say that Windows XP Home will be the only version offered to the OEM’s to put on their machines. This is obviously a push to keep new Windows XP machines from entering the corporate world.

So how do the requirements stack up between Windows XP and Vista? Well, there was such a huge time gap between the two operating system releases that the minimum system requirements differ quite a bit:

     Windows XPVista CapableVista Premium
    Processor233MHz800MHz1.0GHz
    Memory64MB512MB1GB
    Hard Drive Space1.5GB15GB15GB

It makes sense that Windows XP will still be available on the ULCPC’s looking at the system requirements. In particular the hard drive space is drastically different when comparing XP to Vista. Most of the ULCPC’s wouldn’t have the space needed to run Vista.

Now the question is whether you buy as many retail copies of XP as you can, and then sell them on eBay after June 30th? 😉

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!
