Google Tests Top Banner Ads

Google Tests Top Banner AdsIf you are a frequent visitor to the World Wide Web, have you noticed that in Google search, there has been select web searches that seem to feature rather large and unfamiliar banner ads whenever the results page is served? Google has recently confirmed that they are currently testing out such ads with a tiny percentage of its user base. According to a Google spokesperson, it has been deemed as “a small experiment.” For instance, what you see above was a screenshot of one of the brands being advertised, as tweeted by @SynrgyHQ, who later learned from Google that around 30 brands have already signed up to be a part of this advertising test.

So far, it seems that the percentage of users who have come across such ads happens to stand at under 5%. Not only that, such ads will only show up whenever you are looking for something that is specifically relevant to the brand, as you see above. If one were to rewind the clock by 8 years or so, we do remember that Google promised that such a situation will never happen. Marissa Mayer even wrote in 2005, “There will be no banner ads on the Google homepage or web search results pages. There will not be crazy, flashy, graphical doodads flying and popping up all over the Google site. Ever.”

Apple Starts Selling OS X Lion And Mountain Lion Via Their Online Store

Apple Starts Selling OS X Lion And Mountain Lion Via Their Online StoreWith OS X Mavericks being rolled out to the masses, there are probably still Mac users running on much older versions of Mac computers, meaning that their devices might not be eligible for an upgrade to Mavericks. What this means is that they will either have to turn to OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion, but unfortunately both OS X Lion and Mountain Lion have since been removed from the Mac App Store. Well the good news is that if you wanted to upgrade to either operating system, Apple has since put both versions in their online store for purchase at $19.99 per copy.

For those hoping for a physical disc of the operating system, you’d be out of luck as both OS X Lion and Mountain Lion will be available as a digital download. By purchasing the software via Apple’s online store, you will then be presented with a redemption code which you can then use in the Mac App Store to begin your download. Offering OS X Lion makes sense for older Mac computers that cannot be updated to OS X Mountain Lion, but it’s a bit odd that Mountain Lion is being offered given that most Mountain Lion Mac computers can run OS X Mavericks, but we guess there are some who might prefer Mountain Lion over Mavericks. Either way if you’d like to get your hands on the software, hit up Apple’s online store for the download: OS X Lion / OS X Mountain Lion.

Glenn Künzler over at MacTrastMac App Store Bug Might Not Be A Bug After All when he managed to upgrade his version of Aperture for free. Adobe To Sandbox Flash Player For Safari Users

Adobe To Sandbox Flash Player For Safari UsersWhen Apple released OS X Mavericks to the public, not only did they introduce a new look and a host of new features to consumers, but they have also introduced added security to Mac computers as well with one of them through the use of the App Sandbox feature. Now it seems that after years of taking abuse and having to fight off malware and exploits through Adobe Flash Player, Adobe has announced that they will be taking advantage of App Sandbox which should help restrict malicious code from running outside of OS X Maverick’s native browser, Safari.

Thanks to the App Sandbox feature, it will allow Adobe to limit the plugin’s capabilities to read and write files, along with defining what sort of assets their Flash Player will be able to access. In a statement made by Adobe platform security specialist, Peleus Uhley, “Safari users on OS X Mavericks can view Flash Player content while benefiting from these added security protections […] We’d like to thank the Apple security team for working with us to deliver this solution.” This is not the first time that Adobe has attempted sandboxing as they have done so with other browsers in the past, such as with Google Chrome, Mozilla’s FireFox, and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, but we guess Safari has since been added to that list.

    Broadband Connectivity Arrives In Space

Broadband Connectivity Arrives In SpaceWhen we talk about space travel, chances are we would think of it being one of the most high tech situations where one can be in. Unfortunately, that is not the case across the board. For instance, actual communications between the Earth and moon still happen to be static-filled, just like as they were back in the 1960s. NASA might have something to turn things around though, after they have successfully got a lunar broadband connection up and running. Yes sir, this spanking new connection might happen to be in the testing phase at the moment, but it would certainly go great lengths to enable scientists to collect more data from spacecraft as well as rovers, while enabling astronauts to maintain good communications as they travel farther and farther away from Earth.

One thing about radio is, it is highly dependable, but the Earth has more or less moved on from there already. Broadband could be the new vehicle of communication, where it sends data in pulses of laser light. Don Cornwell, project manager for the new communications system at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, shared, “Our Internet is completely powered by pulsed lasers that run through optical fibers in big cities.”

Does this mean we will be able to see the first Facebook update from space using this new medium soon?

Yahoo Picks Up LookFlow So That Flickr Can Improve

Yahoo Picks Up LookFlow So That Flickr Can ImproveA rolling stone might gather no moss, and companies certainly do not want to remain stuck in a single place without making any progress at all in relation to its competitors. Having said that, one of the ways that companies could improve themselves would be by doing plenty of research and development on their own part, or alternatively, purchase companies that already have the kind of expertise which they are looking for. In this case, Yahoo has acquired LookFlow, an image recognition company, in order to ensure that their plan to improve photo discovery on Flickr will be able to kick off on the right note.

Just what does LookFlow’s technology deliver? Well, it will rely on machine learning in order to assist folks in locating and exploring images. This is a goal that is in alignment with those from Yahoo’s Flickr photo-sharing service, according to the good people at LookFlow. All five engineers at LookFlow will accompany the technology that they built to Yahoo’s Flickr business in San Francisco. Do expect to see LookFlow’s product incorporated into a future version of Flickr. We do hope to see improvements made to Flickr, as any edge is a good one, no matter how slight.
