Windows RT 8.1 Drops Desktop Tile On Start Screen

Windows RT 8.1 Drops Desktop Tile On Start ScreenAh, Windows RT. I guess the whole idea of rolling out this particular version of Windows does not seem to look so smart any more, considering the number of Surface RT tablets that were left behind in the inventory (which is now simply known as the Surface tablet) because not too many people wanted to pick it up. Well, Microsoft has rolled out the Windows RT 8.1 update recently, only to pull it back because of some issues before re-releasing it to the masses. We have word from the Redmond company that the Windows RT 8.1 update will indeed do away with the default Desktop tile from the Start screen on devices, although if you so desire, you are able to place the tile back.

The whole idea of removing the Desktop tile is simple – Microsoft wants to make sure that RT users will remain within the confines of the Metro world. It makes sense actually, since it does not really make much of an impact to include the normal desktop on Windows RT in the first place. In fact, letting users access the desktop in Windows RT would just sow additional seeds of confusion, since many people would assume that this is a normal Windows machine, and would like to run similar programs that way, although Windows RT does not work that way.

OS X Mavericks See 6-8% Adoption In 24 Hours

OS X Mavericks See 6 8% Adoption In 24 HoursApple’s latest computer operating system, OS X Mavericks, was released yesterday and it seems that the operating system is being adopted faster than its predecessor, OS X Mountain Lion. According to the numbers released by analytics firm, GoSquared, they have found that OS X Mavericks now accounts for 6-8% of all OS X traffic. The firm notes that the numbers are still fluctuating at the moment, but they seem to range between 6-8% which is admittedly pretty impressive given that it was released about 24 hours ago.

This is compared to OS X Mountain Lion which only saw an adoption rate of 3% within 48 hours of its launch. However OS X Mavericks was released as a free update and covers a pretty huge range of MacBook laptops as well as Mac desktop computers, which might explain why the adoption rate is higher than Mountain Lion which was a paid upgrade. It will be interesting to see what the numbers are further down the line, where new customers and late adopters will be added to the mix. What do you guys think of OS X Mavericks so far? Worth the upgrade?

2013 13″ MacBook Air Gets Significant Battery Improvements With OS X Mavericks

2013 13 MacBook Air Gets Significant Battery Improvements With OS X MavericksIf you own a 2013 MacBook Air that is still running on OS X Mountain Lion, you might want to consider update to the free OS X Mavericks update that was released just yesterday. Granted there are some changes made to the operating system that might throw you off, especially if you’ve been using Mountain Lion for a while now, but perhaps the gains in battery life might be able to offset those changes. According to a rather comprehensive and lengthy review of OS X Mavericks by John Siracusa over at Ars Technica, he found that installing Mavericks managed to boost battery life on MacBook computers rather significantly.

As you can see in the bar graphs above, installing Mavericks on a 2007 MacBook Pro saw the laptop’s battery life jump from about 3.15 hours to 3.93 hours. While it is an improvement, it’s not that much, at least when compared to the likes of a 2013 MacBook Air which saw its battery life jump from an average of 12.07 hours to a massive 15.68 hours! This is thanks to the power saving features that have been built into Mavericks, such as Timer Coalescing, Compressed Memory, and App Nap. Of course we don’t expect all MacBook Air owners to get those numbers as each person uses their laptops in a different way and with different settings, but hopefully the update should allow you to notice battery life improvements at the very least.

    Facebook Removes Beheading Video

Facebook Removes Beheading VideoJust a couple of days ago, we did talk about how social networking giant Facebook has silently allowed both violent images as well as videos to be posted – as long as it was done with the right intention. Well, there has been much uproar among both users and advertisers this week due to an alleged beheading video that happened in Mexico, and it does seem as though Facebook had performed a U-turn by removing said beheading video.

Facebook initially argued that such violent videos can be posted to raise awareness. A Facebook spokesperson mentioned, “When people share this type of graphic content, it is often to condemn it. If it is being shared for sadistic pleasure or to celebrate violence, Facebook removes it.”

Taking a closer look at the situation, Facebook announced that they have removed said video which was titled “Challenge, Anybody can watch this video?” A statement from Facebook went this way, “Based on [our] enhanced standards, we have re-examined recent reports of graphic content and have concluded that this content improperly and irresponsibly glorifies violence. For this reason, we have removed it.Going forward, we ask that people who share graphic content for the purpose of condemning it do so in a responsible manner, carefully selecting their audience and warning them about the nature of the content so they can make an informed choice about it.”

    Mimoco BatteryBot Launced On Kickstarter

Mimoco BatteryBot Launced On KickstarterMimoco has long been a name that is associated with fun looking USB flash drives, and this time around, they have decided to jump aboard the Kickstarter bandwagon by launching a new product line there known as the BatteryBot. The BatteryBot happens to be a portable backup battery charger which will feature an array of characters as well as unique features such as LED indicator lights that are located on the feet of each character.

This would make the BatteryBot as the world’s first and only character-based rechargeable backup battery for a range of devices, including smartphones, tablets and mobile devices. There will be 10 initial BatteryBot designs to kick things off, where they happen to hail from the Animal Critterz and Core Series collections. Of course, if you want to get more intimate with them, the 10 primary BatteryBot styles would be Terry Le Bat (a Kickstarter exclusive), Shocky Shark, Powly Owly, Larry LobstAh, Turbo Turtle, Galaxor, Pawly PandAh, RayD8, Psy, and PowAh KowAh.

The BatteryBot arrives with a 5,200mAh battery capacity. Of course, that would be the minimum, as depending on how well this particular project goes, it might just increase with stretch goals down the road. Would you fork out anywhere from $70 to $80 for this puppy should it make the cut?

Gmail And Docs Receive Handwriting Input Capability

Gmail And Docs Receive Handwriting Input CapabilityWe all know that Gmail and Docs do come with rather wide language support, but there are some cases when using the keyboard is not exactly the most ideal situation to be in. Should you be a student who wants to include a foreign phrase in your paper, or perhaps you are an international consultant who intends to start off your message with a friendly local greeting, you will now be able to take advantage of writing down words in your very own handwriting straight into both Gmail and Google Docs, using your mouse or trackpad. I don’t suppose if you happen to have a touchscreen enabled notebook, you can also write directly onto the screen itself, although a stylus of sorts would come in rather handy in such a situation.

If your curiosity is piqued and you would want to enable such input tools in Gmail or Docs, all you need to do is select the handwriting input that is represented by a pencil icon of the language that you would want to use. Apart from that, you will also be able to write single or even multiple characters at once in the panel, and have them show up in your message or document. Right now, handwriting input will be available in Google Docs for more than 20 languages, and in the case of Gmail, it will be for over 50 languages, where among them include Chinese, Japanese, Hindi and Russian.
