Bing Gets New Speech Recognition Control

Bing Gets New Speech Recognition Control It does seem as though Microsoft’s Bing has just received a spanking new speech recognition control as well as an updated Bing OCR and Translator controls. The new Bing Speech Recognition Control for Windows 8 and 8.1 have been released, where it will be accompanied by updates to the Bing Optical Character Recognition Control for Windows 8.1 as well as Bing Translator Control for Windows 8.1, where it would allow developers to be more knowledgeable, natural, and aware applications. Speech Recognition for Windows 8.0 and 8.1 would mean you will be able to simply speak to your handset for a truly hands-free experience. This lets you interact more naturally with your devices to dictate emails, look for the latest news, and navigate through your apps among others.

Should you be a Windows Phone developer, you would be familiar with the speech recognition within Windows Phone. It takes as little as ten lines of C# + XAML or JavaScript + HTML for you to place a SpeechRecognizerUX control in your application, in addition to a microphone button as well as a TextBlock, accompanied by the required code to support them. Whenever you tap or click the mic, you will hear a blip, or “earcon”, which is the signal that you can speak there and then. [Press Release]

Scientists Create A Disk Able To Store Data For A Million Years

Being able to store terabytes of data on a hard drive is pretty easy as nowadays, all you need to do is hook up a hard drive to your computer and you can start storing content immediately. But being able to keep that data lasting for longer than several years can be quite a challenge, especially if you regularly use the hard drive. It looks like that will be a thing of the past as a team of researchers have built a hard drive that can reportedly store data for over one million years. (more…)

Nokia Lumia 2520 Tablet Becomes Real

Nokia Lumia 2520 Tablet Becomes RealIf you have heard some rumors about a Nokia Tablet, they were true. Nokia just launched the 2520, a 10.1” Windows RT tablet that comes with a 1080p IPS display low reflectance (+Gorilla Glass 2). Unlike many other Windows tablets that have been launched recently, the Nokia 2520 will feature 4G LTE from the get go (along with WiFi of course). Interestingly, this could also be a tablet that comes with a good camera. In the back, there is a 6.7 Megapixel camera equipped with a Carl Zeiss lens that Nokia likes so much. It can capture 1080p video at 60FPS and we’re looking forward to seeing it in action. The front camera is a more regular 2 Megapixel.

Facebook Allows Violent Images And Videos With the Right Intention

Facebook Allows Violent Images And Videos With the Right IntentionFacebook did have a ban on graphic content before, but it seems that this ban has been reversed now that Facebook has started to enable users to post violent images or videos. There is one condition to it though – the posting of such graphic content has a purpose, which is, your intention must be to condemn, and not glorify, such acts as depicted in the video, according to the good people over at the BBC. The BBC picked up a tip from a user who mentioned that complaints from other members fell on deaf ears at Facebook, as Facebook continued to refuse the deletion of a page that depicted a gruesome situation in a video where a masked man beheaded a woman, allegedly in Mexico.

So far, we have heard that Facebook started to delete visually graphic content in May this year after child-protection advocates complained about videos that showed decapitations. According to the Family Online Safety Institute, such disturbing images “crossed a line” and might carry the possibility of potentially causing psychological damage among Facebook users, as some of them are as young as 13. Facebook mentioned in May, “We will remove instances of these videos that are reported to us while we evaluate our policy and approach to this type of content.”

It seems that this policy has been quietly reversed after some time, with Facebook mentioning, “Facebook has long been a place where people turn to share their experiences, particularly when they’re connected to controversial events on the ground, such as human rights abuses, acts of terrorism and other violent events. People share videos of these events on Facebook to condemn them. If they were being celebrated, or the actions in them encouraged, our approach would be different.”

Monitoring intent would be a whole lot more difficult, don’t you think so?

    Google Announces Project Shield

No, Project Shield has nothing to do with the gaming rig from NVIDIA, but rather, Google has just announced this initiative that intends to ensure that smaller activist sites will be able to remain active and running during Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. The project’s initial focus would be on offering protection to under-resourced sites that serve up what they call “media, elections, and human rights related content.”

Right now, Project Shield has seen action to assist a bunch of small sites in sensitive areas to remain up and running even though they come under attack from civilian and governmental hackers. Project Shield has so far notched up some notable “victories” underneath its belt, including a Persian-language social and political blog, a website that offers early warnings of scud missile attacks to folks who happen to live in war torn Syria, as well as enabled a Kenyan election monitoring service to remain up for the entire election duration. Unfortunately, this is an exclusive “club” as it remains an invite-only service, with additional invitations being rolled out on a “rolling basis.”

What do you think of this particular initiative? We do wonder what the effective rate is when it comes to DDoS protection against external hackers.

No New Hardware At October 24th Event, Says Google

No New Hardware At October 24th Event, Says GoogleGoogle has stepped forward to mention (according to the good people over at Electronista who actually decided to ask them) that there will be no new hardware announcements at the upcoming October 24th event, which would also mean that the highly rumored Nexus 5 device which has seen its fair share of leaks will not make an appearance then, too. When asked concerning a possible hardware release, a Google spokeswoman mentioned, “The October 24th event will not be a launch of a device or hardware, rather a mixer for consumer press to better acquaint themselves with Google Play.”

That means there will be no news or hardware launch at this particular event, so it will all be more on a relationship building experience, as well as for the consumer press to be able to rub shoulders with Google Play in order to know it more intimately. We do know that there will be “music, movies, games, and a special performance by Capital Cities.” Well, I guess for those of us who have been hankering after something a whole lot more – the Nexus 5 in particular, it is time to continue exercising the virtue of patience! After all, don’t good things come to those who wait?

    Dell XPS 12 (2013) Review

    Dell XPS 12 (2013) Review

Dell has been manufacturing a number of ultrabooks and tablets over the past couple of years, with its hybrid tablet notebook announced, the XPS 12, this time last year. Several months passed since the Dell XPS 12 was first announced, but the notebook finally launched during this year’s Computex, although it just missed the Haswell bandwagon. Dell knows how important Intel’s Haswell processor is, which is why they refreshed the Dell XPS 12 to now feature it shortly after the notebook was released.

The Dell XPS 12 is the company’s latest hybrid tablet notebook offering as it now features Intel’s 4th generation Core processors, NFC ability as well as an improved battery life. These upgraded features come in addition to its 4GB of RAM, 128GB SSD, a 400-nit 12.5-inch 1920 x 1080 touch display as well as its unique flip-hinge design. The Dell XPS 12 certainly looks like an interesting hybrid on paper, so let’s get down to the business of seeing what this notebook is really made of. (more…)
