Flickr Gets New Beta Design And New Photo Experience

Flickr Gets New Beta Design And New Photo ExperienceFor those of you who are frequent users of Flickr, you might have noticed that Flickr has just received a new beta design from Yahoo, where it will deliver a new photo viewing experience. Joining up is a snap, all you need to do is to just click the “Try our new Photo Experience” button on any photo page on Flickr, and you ought to notice three main changes. First of all, the photo would be bigger than ever before, right about 25% larger in size compared to its predecessor – meaning that more pixels are crammed in to deliver a cleaner view.

Apart from that, the “story” would be located right next to the photo, as all photos have a story behind them, such as in the comments, tags, as well as photo-specific information. The whole idea of the new beta design in Flickr was to present a larger image that does not require you to perform much, if any, scrolling, at the same time check out whatever other information it carries.

Last but not least, the new photo experience has been built from the ground up, relying on new technology in order to depict photos in a far faster manner than ever before. The performance boost will hopefully be significant enough for users to notice as they go from one photo to another. [Press Relaese]

    Direct3D Improvements To Arrive Soon

Direct3D Improvements To Arrive SoonWith Windows 8.1, we are going to see a number of improvements, not only in Windows, but also in Direct3D, the API (application programming interface) that drives the graphics of most AAA PC games. Of course, there are a number of invisible changes like performance and stability, but some of them have the potential to change PC and Xbox gaming in a significant way. Most of the new features have been presented to developers before during the Microsoft BUILD conferences, but they are about to be released to the public. (more…)

Yahoo Mail Redesign Did Not Go Down As Well As Expected

Yahoo Mail Redesign Did Not Go Down As Well As ExpectedNearly a week ago, we reported that Yahoo has introduced a revamp of Yahoo Mail to celebrate its 16th birthday. I guess it is not all sweet sixteen as expected, since the major Yahoo Mail redesign resulted in key functions removed or broken. Needless to say, this has led to thousands of upset Yahoo Mail users who have informed the Internet giant that the recent redesign is a massive disaster, and they do want Yahoo to do away with the new and bring back the old. Of course, amidst all of this would be additional reports of serious technical issues that continue to happen.

It has hardly been a week since the Yahoo Mail redesign, and plenty of flak had already been picked up. Many users are upset that they are no longer able to organize their Inbox by Tabs or Sort by Sender, and neither are they able to view their Folders unless they leave the Inbox, which is rather inconvenient. Not only that, new emails are no longer bold, while the delete button’s placement of being next to the sender name has proved nothing short of disastrous. Needless to say, Yahoo had better get their act together and fix things up, fast! Otherwise, they can continue to see their market share slide.

    Google Looks At User Endorsements

Google Looks At User EndorsementsFor a company that supposedly “does no evil”, we find it rather strange that they have, from time to time, irked their many users via a certain action. Well, over the weekend, we did bring you word that Google has a new ad policy that has raised the ire of many Google users, which resulted in them replacing their profile photos with that of a certain Eric Schmidt. The reason behind this widespread move? It seems that Google did mention that the company will soon have the ability to depict users’ names, photos, ratings as well as comments in ads on the Internet, using those to endorse a marketer’s product. Right now, Facebook is already running endorsement ads that are not different from such ideals.

According to Google this is but a minor update, but it does lead one to think just how much personal information should one share online, and how much do such companies treasure our personal information which were given voluntarily? Both Google and Facebook claim that such changes were meant to offer users a more comprehensive and personalized service range, but it does not sit down well with privacy advocates who claim that such information usage does not jive with the way that authors themselves expected when they first posted it. What is your take on the situation?

Netflix Negotiates With US Cable TV Providers

Netflix Negotiates With US Cable TV ProvidersWord on the street has it that Netflix is currently in negotiating with US cable providers in order to deliver its online streaming video service in the form of an app via the users’ set-top boxes, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Should this particular deal go through, it would mean that Netflix has scored a major victory, which does show that it has been sensitive to the ever changing user habits when it comes to viewing trends.

This particular report does seem to jive worldwide, since a month or so back, a somewhat similar deal was also announced over in the UK with cable operator Virgin Media. This particular agreement would enable some of Virgin Media’s 3.8 million customers to perform a search for Netflix shows over on the same on-screen guide that was used to look up cable TV programs. Netflix plays it smart, having positioned themselves as a far more affordable option compared to cable TV for viewers who want the convenience of on-demand television, and it also offered a way for cable providers prevent losing additional like-minded customers to Netflix. A win-win situation, one might say.

If you reside in a country where Netflix has a presence, just how much money do you allocate each month to take advantage of what they have to offer?

Microsoft To Depict Social And Career Info Of People In Bing Results

Microsoft To Depict Social And Career Info Of People In Bing ResultsIt was just yesterday that we brought you word where Facebook has finished up the removal of an old search setting, “Who can look up your Timeline by name.” Well, this time around, we have news of search as well, except that it will be Microsoft playing the fiddle. From today onward, Microsoft’s Bing search engine will make it possible for folks to share more personal information about themselves with the help of Bing’s Snapshot feature.

Among such information that can be shared include your employment history, in addition to some of the more prominent social posts that hail from Twitter and Instagram. This particular integration with Klout would be a whole lot more than just skin deep, as it depends on the user him/herself to determine the level of detail that they want depicted to the entire world whenever one is searched for in Bing. Before you are able to take advantage of this though, you will first need to have both Klout and LinkedIn accounts in order to come up with your very own Snapshot.

Something tells me that employers of the future might be using Bing at times to figure out more details about their future employees, and hopefully there will not be much propping up of one’s personal details and achievements beforehand to provide employers with a fair image prior to the interview.

Qualcomm Looks To Build Neuro-Inspired Chips

Qualcomm Looks To Build Neuro Inspired ChipsQualcomm, right now one of the major smartphone chipmakers in the world, will be working to develop extremely efficient neuro-inspired chips in the near future that will have these very same chips work within smartphones, robots, and vision systems. Of course, having such chips alone would be useless if it does not have the right kind of software to work with, which is why Qualcomm is working towards the end of a neuro-inspired chip. In other words, we are probably looking at a processor that will hopefully mimic the neural structures as well as processing methods found in the brain. (more…)
