Graphene Computer Chips Run on Light Instead of Electricity

Thanks to improvements in fiber optics, most of the information that you consume on any given day is transported by light. Quite inefficiently, however, most computer chips need electricity to operate, and scientists haven’t quite figured out how to make the leap to more futuristic materials. At least not until graphene came along.

Box Notes Announced

Do you love working on the cloud, and collaborating with other folks on the same document without having to meet up with one another at the office? Well, here is the opportunity for you to do so – thanks to the introduction of Box Notes. Box Notes opens up a new way for one to create documents and work in real-time with others on Box. To know if any of your team mates happen to be on Box Notes at the same time that you are online, all you need to do is check out the Box Note and zoom down the left side of the page. A tiny profile picture would indicate whether your friend is there or not.

Box Notes is all about working with others, and the aforementioned profile pictures have been nicknamed ”note heads.” Whenever you are working on a note with different people, the presence of profile pictures at the place the respective person is working on the document itself makes it easier to keep track on who is working on what, instead of saying stuff like “look at the third paragraph, line number four.” Security-wise, you need not worry too much about Box Notes, since it is built on top of Box. Those who are interested can sign up to make a request to the private beta. [Press Release]

Sony Reveals New Portable Storage Solutions

Sony Reveals New Portable Storage Solutions Sony has recently unveiled a new range of portable storage solutions which were specially designed for professionals who require high-speed, highly reliable data storage, for both back-up as well as transfer of content wherever they are. This new range would include a 256GB solid state drive (PSZ-SA25) as well as a pair of hard drive models which will feature capacities of 500GB and 1TB (PSZ-HA50 and PSZ-HA1T).

Regardless of which particular model that you settle for, each of these drives will come with a single USB 3.0 and a pair of FireWire 800 interfaces, which would then enable users to transfer video at up to 400MBps with the SSD model and 120MBps with the HDD models over USB 3.0. Just to give a better idea to the man on the street as to what these speeds mean for the end user, how does transferring around 30GB of video to the SSD drive in under one and a half minutes sound to you? All purchases will also feature a heavy silicon cover and protective case that allows it to withstand the rigors of field production and reduce shipping damage. Your data should stay safe thanks to integrated shock resistance which is capable of absorbing falls of up to 7.5 feet for SSD and up to 6.5 feet for HDD. [Press Release]

Twitter Has A New Feature To Manage Twitter Conversations Better

Twitter Has A New Feature To Manage Twitter Conversations BetterTwitter, fresh off word that they are lining up an IPO, has unveiled a new exclusive feature for verified users (basically those who have a blue check mark) that will assist them in filtering their Twitter mentions in the “Connect” tab which is located right above their feed. These verified users are now able to check out their mentions via a trio of different categories; namely all, filtered, and verified. The reason behind this move is to enable users to easily identify the conversations which might prove to be most important, while sifting out the rest of the riff raff and spam that comes with the territory.

Whenever you want to check out connections in the “Verified” category, it will only feature mentions by other verified users. Those who prefer to view mentions under the “Filtered” category will see posts that are, in Twitter’s words, “based on an algorithm we use to filter out spam.” This is a move which could be seen to encourage the more popular Twitter users to remain active on the micro-blogging platform, but as to whether it will achieve that goal in the long run remains to be seen. What about you, what do you think about this new feature for Twitter conversation management?

Google Coder Allows You To Build Raspberry Pi Apps In A Browser

We have seen our fair share of projects that have involved the super small Raspberry Pi computer, and most of these are just pure genius in nature. There is always the line that we would like to cross from time to time, pushing the boundaries to explore new possibilities, and while it is theoretically possible to transform a Raspberry Pi into a web server, the real truth is, it ain’t that easy. The folks over at Google might have just unraveled the mystery and made things a whole lot easier by streamlining the process via its latest Coder project.

Google’s Coder is an open source tool which would enable developers to construct web apps for a ready-made Raspberry Pi web server, and the only thing that they need would be a desktop browser, now how cool is that? Coder will be able to manage the entire slew of files, media included, and the Raspberry Pi needs just a network connection and an SD memory card reader to get going. Other than the hardware, Coder would remain free to use, although it weighs in at a rather hefty 1.04GB download. Even if you are a new coders, it does not matter as you can use Coder to craft small projects in HTML, CSS, and Javascript, all directly from the web browser itself.

    Alleged HTC Harmony Specifications Leaked

    Alleged HTC Harmony Specifications Leaked

It was rumored a couple of months ago that HTC is developing a new Windows Phone 8 devicet that is based on the design of its popular HTC One smartphone. This device has been rumored a couple of times, apparently it carries the “Harmony” codename inside the company. Today the alleged specifications of HTC Harmony have leaked. It is expected that the company might launch this smartphone in either October or November.

The rumor claims that HTC Harmony will come equipped with a 4.7 inch LCD3 full HD 1080p display, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of on-board storage, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, Beats Audio, BoomSound, Ultrapixel rear camera and a 2,300mAh battery. HTC hasn’t said if it is indeed in the process of developing a new Windows Phone 8 smartphone. Apart from that, this rumor comes from a source that doesn’t have any track record, good or bad, so a grain of salt is definitely advised. The rumor doesn’t talk about pricing or specific availability dates. Only recently Microsoft announced that it has acquired Nokia core phone business. Many people were wondering how other WP8 manufacturers will feel about this deal. HTC only said that it is “assessing” the situation, it hasn’t said as yet if there’s any radical change to its Windows Phone 8 strategy.
