Intel Haswell Based Chromebooks Announced

Intel Haswell Based Chromebooks Announced

An entirely new lineup of Chromebooks has been announced at Intel’s IDF 2013 conference today. These Chromebooks are based on Intel’s Haswell processors which not only offer greater performance, but increased battery life as well. It is said that these processors improve battery life by more than 2X over previous generations. Apple has used Haswell processors for its latest MacBook Air lineup as well, the 13 inch model now touts 12 hours of battery life, according to the company. The new Chromebook lineup features products from a number of manufactures, Acer, ASUS, Toshiba and HP to be precise.

Acer’s new Chromebook is described as “light and portable,” while HP’s new Chromebook14 has a relatively larger display and is offered in various colors. Toshiba is a new entrant, the versatility and portability of its Chromebook are touted. ASUS is a new entrant as well, it has debuted a product called Chromebox, which will basically be a lightweight PC. Not much has been revealed as yet about these new products, they’re said to release over the coming months. No pricing or availability information has been provided. Google says that six of the top laptop manufacturers are now offering Chromebooks, and that it looks forward to “continued advances” in both the hardware and software.

    Arduino Yun Now Available

Arduino Yun Now AvailableFor those of you out there who have been left scratching your heads, wondering just what the heck happened to the Arduino Yun after it decided to skip out on its original June release date, fret not. The apocalypse has not arrived, and it is finally available in-store to interested parties. The Arduino Yun will retail for $69 or €52 a pop (VAT not part of the deal), where it will be different from the classic Arduino Leonardo system as it combines that with a Wi-Fi system-on-a-chip that runs on Linino.

It will be based upon the ATMega32u4 microcontroller as well as on the Atheros AR9331 running Linino, which in turn is a customized version of OpenWRT that so happens to be the most used Linux distribution where embedded devices are concerned. In a nutshell, owners of the new Arduino Yun are able to enjoy tinkering with their customized wireless access point with Ethernet, USB and a microSD memory slot. How many of you out there have already given the Arduino a shot in the past, and do you think you would enjoy the same with the new Arduino Yun? After all, the adage of better late than never certainly applies in this case, don’t you think so?

Skype Pre-Release Spotted On Windows 8.1

Skype Pre Release Spotted On Windows 8.1Skype users, you will be pleased to hear that the Skype pre-release has already hit Windows 8.1, and Microsoft would surely hope that this would be able to help enhance your everyday experiences. In this pre-release version of a fully built-in Skype app, it would pave the way for someone to experience the first of its kind, fully integrated Skype, as long as that particular device runs on Windows 8.1.

The presence of built-in Skype would mean that one need not miss a message, ever again. With Skype for Windows 8.1, you will be able to view your missed calls as well as incoming instant messages, in addition to answering those calls straight from your lock screen. Not only that, on the Start screen itself, you will be able to select on how you would want to respond, as to whether it is someone close to your heart who warrants a video call, plain old audio, or simply to decline the incoming call and send an instant message in place instead.

Skype for Windows 8.1 would also open up the doors for you to click to call directly through Internet Explorer (hmmm, who uses this browser any more these days?), and that would definitely make tasks such as making a restaurant reservation a whole lot faster and more productive.

Windows 8.1 Released For MSDN And TechNet Subscribers

Windows 8.1 Released For MSDN And TechNet Subscribers

Late last month Microsoft announced that Windows 8.1 had reached the RTM phase, that particular build was leaked soon after that. The company initially didn’t allow developers to download the final copy of Windows 8.1 before its October 18th official release date. In a blog post today, the company says that it has heard complaints from MSDN and TechNet subscribers and has decided to make the copy available to them from today.

Apart from making the Windows 8.1 Core and Windows 8.1 Pro edition available today on MSDN and TechNet, Microsoft has also released a Visual Studio 2013 RC build for developers. The company says that this build is not final, but its good enough to enable developers to “make progress to ready their Windows 8.1 apps.” However before the apps can be listed in Windows Store before the October 18th launch, they’ll need to go through final refinement. In the past, the RTM build meant that no changes would be made to that particular version of Windows before its public release. This time around, it is believed that the Windows 8.1 RTM build isn’t really final, and that the company is going to update its built-in apps and fix several bugs prior to the release next month.
