Metal Gear Solid V revealed: hard-hitting mega-title coming up!

This week at the 2013 Game Developer’s Conference a couple of mysterious trailers from the past few weeks have been combined by the folks at Kojima to create Metal Gear Solid V. This is the first time the game has been officially revealed as existing, while two trailers – “The Phantom Pain” and “Ground Zeroes” – were both actually part of a series of pieces leading up to this final first push. Metal Gear Solid V (or Metal Gear Solid 5, if you prefer), is loaded and ready for action.

What you’re seeing here is the trailer shown on-stage today courtesy of Hideo Kojima – the presenter at hand, mind you, was wearing a bandage around his head and a t-short that read “Phantom Pain” as he did so. None too subtle! If you don’t see it here already, you’ll soon be having a peek at some more gameplay as well.

As far as the title Ground Zeroes goes – that’s just another piece of the game’s plotline. According to TheSixthAxis, we’ll be seeing Ground Zeroes late in the game while The Phantom Pain will be a bit of a prologue sort of presentation. For those of you wondering, that’s actor (and again voice actor) Keifer Sutherland helping Snake out of the hospital, and the band Garbage doing the soundtrack we’re hearing thus far.

Here you’ll see The Phantom Pain as revealed at the 2012 Video Game Awards – remember and freak out accordingly!

Also be sure to remember the greatness that was – and will be – Ground Zeroes in its first trailer here:

Stay tuned as we find out more information than you can handle about this futuristic blast-fest and dive deeper into tapping on windows and walls than you’ll ever have wanted to go! Check the timeline below for more Metal Gear Solid action as well!

Android-powered MiiPC Puts Parents in Control of Kids’ Computing

A low-cost, Android-powered mini-computer has turned up on Kickstarter looking for funding. The machine is called the MiiPC and is designed specifically to help parents keep an eye on exactly what their kids are seeing online and how much time they spend online. The machine runs Android 4.2 and works in conjunction with a special application on an Android or iOS smartphone.

Using the application, parents can see every website their kids visited, how much time they spend online, and block access to specific websites. The app also allows the parent to set a time limit that their kids can spend online or on a specific website. That means if you don’t want your kid to be on Facebook for any more than 30 minutes, you can set that via the app. You can also configure the system for multiple children, each with their own usage rules.

The hardware inside the computer is pretty basic, with a 1.2 GHz Marvell Armada dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM. The machine has 4 GB of integrated storage, an SD slot, and built-in Wi-Fi. Other connectivity options include an Ethernet port, Bluetooth 4.0, dual USB ports, and an HDMI output. The MiiPC can be pre-ordered via Kickstarter for just $99(USD). They expect to start shipping the system late this summer.

Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 62z All-in-One gets compact and budget friendly

This week the folks at Lenovo have revealed the ThinkCentre Edge 62z, an all-in-one machine that allows the user to work in a compact space, have computing power, and only pay a few hundred bucks for the pleasure of it. With the ThinkCentre Edge 62z you’ll be tossing down $549 USD and you’ll be getting an 18.5-inch LCD display with computing guys all in one package. This is your next desktop computer.

Edge62z_06

This machine is not the kind of beast you’re going to be gaming on. Nor is it the computer you’re going to want to give to your niece so she can impress her friends. Instead this is the computer you’ll get for your school library or one you’ll have at the workplace for word processing and office display action.

The ThinkCentre Edge 62z’s display is able to be mounted to the wall or sat on a desk – with included attached stand, of course. You’ll find this machine packed with 3rd Gen Intel Core i3 processors for the low end of high power – this is the most recent generation of Intel processors, but there are also Core i5 and Core i7 models that ramp up by a considerable amount with each step. You’ll also find six USB 2.0 ports for plugging in so many keyboards, mice, and external hard-drives that you won’t know what to do with them all.

Each of these units is ENERGY STAR 5 compliant and works with the EuP 2013 energy efficiency requirement “by consuming less than 0.5 Watts of electricity when turned off.” How about that? This machine will be available starting in May 2013 wherever fine Lenovo products are sold.

MiiPC Android-powered PC aims at kids

One of the big problems that parents face when their kids reach the age where they’re ready to go online is how to prevent their kids from accessing content that’s inappropriate for their age. The founder of computer maker eMachines has a new computer seeking funding via Kickstarter called the MiiPC. The big feature of this machine is that it gives parents the ability to control access to the Internet using a companion mobile application.

miipc

The MiiPC runs the Android 4.2 operating system and allows users to play all sorts of Android apps right on the TV or computer display. The machine uses a Marvell ARMADA dual-core 1.2 GHz SOC. The machine also has 1 GB of DDR memory and 4 GB of internal storage. Storage can be expanded via an integrated SD card slot.

The computer also has a USB port supporting external storage devices. The machine has integrated Wi-Fi, an Ethernet port, and Bluetooth 4.0 built-in. The little computer is designed to connect directly to a TV via an HDMI port supporting up to full HD resolution content. Other features include a pair of USB 2.0 ports, a speaker input, and microphone jack.

One of the key features is companion mobile application that is available for both Android and iOS users. This application allows parents to monitor real-time Internet usage right from their smartphone. Parents can also use that app to limit the amount of time children can spend on the computer in any given day. The app supports multiple user accounts as well. The project is seeking $50,000, and has raised over $49,000 so far. With the early bird special, a pledge of $89 will get one of the computers when it ships this July.

Rival buyout attempt could oust Michael Dell from Dell Computer

Not too long ago the technology world was all a flutter over news that Michael Dell and a consortium of other companies were attempting to purchase Dell Computer and take the company private. Some the major investors in Dell Computer didn’t like the deal and wanted the company to open the doors and consider offers from other potential buyers. Word has now surfaced that other potential bidders for Dell Computer have stepped into the picture and these other companies could be a bad thing for founder Michael Dell.

dell-14z-5

The Wall Street Journal reports that Michael Dell could end up losing control of his company if one of the other bidders purchases Dell Computer. Blackstone Group LP and Dell investor Carl Ichan have expressed interest in purchasing Dell Computer head of a deadline for offers to be made on the technology company. The tip comes from people who claim to be familiar with the negotiations.

By notifying Dell’s board that they are working on firm bids to purchase the computer company, Blackstone and Ichan have given themselves four more days to put together offers according to the sources. These sources also claim that neither of the potential bids from Blackstone or Ichan go over $15 per share.

Michael Dell and the consortium of companies who started the buyout saga, including Microsoft and Silver Lake Partners offered a buyout at about $13.65 per share. If competing offers win the bid for the technology company, Dell could be ousted from control of his company. However, considering that Michael Dell owns 14% of the company, any deal would certainly make him a huge amount of money.
