SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: November 29th, 2012

The first thing you’re going to want to check out this morning is the Scandu Medical Tricorder – Star Trek and all – sort of. Then it’s all about the cars and all about the smartphones, unless you count the ever-so-lovely Basis health-tracking wristwatch. And before you head below, don’t forget to fall in to the most massive black hole in history.

A South Korean rocket was called off at launch – right down to the count-down, in fact. The Samsung Galaxy Note II launches this week on Verizon with 4G LTE: we’ll be bringing on some hands-on action to you very, very soon! The folks at Nintendo are apologizing for the Wii U and its update nightmare while the Wii Mini lurks in the shadows.

Over at the LA Car Show you’ll want to take a look at the Hyundai Veloster C3 concept as well as the brand new Volkswagen Beetle. The Porsche 2013 Cayman has also been revealed as well as the Jaguar XFR-S, complete with 550HP ready to cut you in half. Don’t forget the 2013 Fiat 400 Abarth Cabrio for your futuristic Asphalt racing.

According to a supply chain source, orders for the Microsoft Surface RT have been cut in half. The Wii U has been released in the UK just a bit earlier than expected. Sharp is in talks with Dell, Intel, and Qualcomm about $240 million bucks and the IGZO.

SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: November 28th, 2012

This morning we’re having a massive influx of automobile news because of the LA Car Show that we’re also in attendance of. Have a peek at our Chevrolet Sonic and Siri integration hands-on courtesy of our own Vincent Nguyen. Then move on to such a beauty as the BMW i3 Concept Coupe with a complete ditching of steel for intelligent EV. Also spotted is the new Fiat 500L and 500L Trekking for North American release.

Apple has successfully gotten Samsung Galaxy devices banned in the Netherlands. You’ll be glad to know that Vimeo for iPhone has been updated for easier video creation. Skype for iOS has also been updated with Microsoft account login and animated emoticons (finally! right?)

The entire Curiosity Mars Mission has been classified “history books” worthy by NASA. Science has also spoken up (in general) about a lovely Nuclear engine for deep space exploration.

Vehicle news continues then with the new TMG Sports 650 on the Lexus luxobarge you’re going to need to see to believe. There’s a new Desire short film for Jaguar starring Damien Lewis.

The TomTom navigation app has updates for both iOS 6 and the iPhone 5 but gone is Google Local Search – wonder why? The folks at Mugen have brought forth a massive 6400 mAh battery for the Samsung Galaxy Note II. The operating system known as webOS has returned as a very slow-moving Android homescreen replacement app – more production soon! Also bigfoot is real apparently – check it out!

Google Wants to Give You Answers Before You Ask Questions

Google’s working on building a new kind of mobile search tool, one which pre-guesses what you’re likely to be looking for and pings you a little update before you ask. Sort of like a clairvoyant butler arriving with a bacon sandwich when you need it most. More »

Asus delays dual screen Taichi ultrabooks

Asus has announced that it has delayed shipments in the US for the interesting dual screen Taichi ultrabook. Those machines have been available for US customers order from several websites including Amazon.com. The Taichi is a dual screen ultrabook with a screen on the outside for tablet use and a second screen on the inside for traditional notebook use.

These ultrabooks were originally pegged to ship this month after the launch of Windows 8. Asus is now stating that the machines are expected to start shipping in the United States in December. However, Asus is also opening the door for the Taichi shipments to be pushed even further out.

Asus has offered no specific reasons for the delay of the ultrabooks leaving us to speculate. If you’re unfamiliar with the Taichi dual screen ultrabook, the device considered a Windows 8 hybrid and is available in two models. The 21 DH51 uses an Intel Core i5 processor and has a 128 GB SSD for storage. It sells for $1299 online.

The other model is the Taichi 21 DH71. This machine has a faster Intel Core i7 processor and the 256 GB SSD. This particular machine was reportedly priced at $1299 on Amazon, but that price has been pulled. The machine was listed for $1599 on other online sites. Both models have dual 11.6-inch screens supporting HD resolution and 4 GB of RAM. The machines also have a five-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and dual USB 3.0 ports.

Glitch Throw Pillows: Don’t Worry, Your Video Card is Fine

Like the Blue Screen of Death, brightly colored pixelated display glitches are a familiar sight to computer users with failing hardware or buggy software. We’re seeing less and less of it though; if you’ve grown fond of it take a good look at these throw pillows made by Benjamin Berg aka Stallio.

I’m not sure if Berg based the designs on actual glitches or if he just ingests bath salts through his eyes then wilds out on Photoshop.

You can order the pillows on Berg’s shop at Society6 for $20 to $35(USD). Many of the designs are also available as prints, t-shirts and gadgets skins or cases.

SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: November 27th, 2012

Welcome to the holiday season here in the gadget and tech universe, with no lack of companies coming on from all directions with products galore – and promotions as strange as a pool of interactive water! The Replay XD 720 HD action camcorder has been released in all its black and red glory – ready to mount to your hardcore toys. For those of you that are slightly less hardcore, there’s also the LG Nexus 4 as it re-approaches the Google Play online store this afternoon.

Those of you that braved the web for Cyber Monday yesterday will be glad to know that you’ve reached $2 billion in sales across the Earth. The Nintendo TVii will be launching on December 8th for those lucky users out there with the Wii U in Japan, Europe, and the USA. The top sales spot for smartphones in the past 12 weeks leading up to October 28th belongs to the iPhone 5 according to Kantar.

Lovers of the game Grand Theft Auto V – well before its released – have started a petition to get the game ported to the PC. Our best buddy Minnesota has been found hoarding moon rocks – woopsie! The Wii Mini has been revealed with no internet and a $99.99 price tag for Canada exclusively – and new software too, of course.

Apple has revealed that the iMac (the newest ones) will be popping up on November 30th, while the larger of the two will be appearing in December. It would appear that two of Saturn’s moons have Pac-Man on them. The Large Hadron Collider has potentially discovered New Matter.

Ben Heck Analog WASD Keyboard Mod: Because You Can’t Type With a Joystick

Modder Ben Heck has removed one of the few remaining advantages of videogame consoles over the PC master race: the analog stick. Heck sacrificed an Xbox 360 controller to make the W, A, S and D keys on his keyboard behave like the left stick on the controller, i.e. the harder he presses the keys, the faster his character moves in game. Or whatever “-er” is supposed to happen.

Aside from an Xbox 360 controller, Ben Heck also used magnets, Hall effect sensors and a microcontroller to complete the mod. He ends up with WASD keys that are much more useful in PC games that support gamepads. You can skip to about 10:00 in the video to see Heck test his modded keyboard:

If you already had your soldering spellbook and modding whatzits close at hand, head to Ben Heck’s website to grab the files and code you’ll need for the mod.

Intellipaper USB Drive: The Green Flash Drive

If there’s one thing that people tend to toss around a lot, it’s USB flash drives. Since they are getting so small, they can easily be lost. In order to cut down on all that electronic waste, why not get a green USB flash drive, one made out of paper?

intellipaper usb paper drive

The Intellipaper USB drive isn’t completely made out of paper, but the memory chip is printed on paper, allowing you to mail it, modify it, and cutting down on weight. It also allows for easier recycling. The memory is between 8MB and 32MB, so its aimed at sending around small batches of files, or for things like business or greeting cards, brochures and ads with data embedded into them.

Intellipaper’s USB drive was launched as an Indiegogo project to raise funds for ramping up production. Unfortunately, they’ve only raised about $300 out of a goal of $300,000, so it’s unlikely that this project will ever be made, though I’m keeping my fingers crossed for them. You’ll need to pledge at least $30 to get a box of 10 disposable thumb drives.

SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: November 26th, 2012

This morning we’ve got one whole heck of a lot of digital sales going on around the web – that’s what happens the Monday after Black Friday – but we’re concentrating on the news that never, never stops. Have a start with an eye implant for those hoping to “see” braille in a halfway sense. Next you’ll find the revolution coming on quick with Google picking up the ol’ ICOA WiFi hotspot specialist to take command of the data universe – imagine a nation without mobile data carriers.

The device known as Raspberry Pi is about to get Minecraft for great justice. Meanwhile BlackBerry is ready to bring on Carrier Billing with BlackBerry App World for over 50 carriers. Microsoft is promising to remain faithful to the Surface with Windows RT for at least four years – kind of them!

If you are indeed looking for Cyber Monday deals, you might want to start with the $129 Kindle Fire. If you’re ready for a super-inexpensive notebook, you might want to think about a Chromebook – but perhaps wait for a touchscreen edition. In other news – that’s never going to happen. Sony is coming out strong with a massively impressive 20.5-inch OLED display for medical use.

Facebook is once again pushing employees to create a better app for Android. Have a peek at our Nokia Asha 205 “Facebook Phone” in all its multicolored glory. Watch out for Apple HTC patent agreement snags and Nintendo Wii U Mini as well.

Wireless Networks of Cows Will Keep Gas Under Control

I’d hate to be the IT guy fixing this network. By dropping electronic devices into the stomachs of cows and networking them together, researchers hope to reduce the climate-warming farts and burps they produce. More »
