Smartype Keyboard Includes Display to Help You Touch Type

More than a decade ago, I decided to learn how to touch type. I didn’t use any tools or special programs, I just placed my hands on the keyboard and tried to find the right keys without looking at it. It took some time, but these days my hands flutter across a keyboard very quickly indeed, but I can see the reason for a keyboard like the Smartype.

Smartype includes a full-color LCD screen, that reminds me of some of electronic typewriters, that shows you what your are typing. If you’re not a touch-typist, it stops you from constantly glancing at the screen and back to the keyboard. The creators claim that the Smartype keyboard will even make touch-typists more productive. That seems somewhat counterintuitive to me, but maybe the visual cue will help.

The display on the Smartype keyboard promises also to run widgets including minimal versions of Twitter and Facebook so that you can share things without even having to open a full-fledged app on your tablet, smartphone or browser. You’ll also be able to run other handy apps like a PC status bar or e-mail and calendar notification apps. Unfortunately, though, the Smartype is only planned for Windows computers at this point, and it doesn’t have a numeric keypad either.

The Smartype will be available for pre-order soon, but no official price has been announced. For now, you can register your interest over on their website.

Hulk Computer Casemod is Simply Smashing

Hulk fans are sure to love this awesome radioactive green computer case mod. Even the Hulk himself would just stand before it in amazement rather than try to smash it and he smashes everything.

In fact, I dare say that it would bring a tear to the Hulk’s eye. It features a whole mess of green cold cathodes, action figures doing various things, external hardware, and cooling equipment that glows and looks like radioactive ooze. It’s completely over the top, but in a good way.

This unbelievable piece of art was the highlight of this year’s ‘bring your own computer’ at QUAKECON 2012. You can see why. It was built by Derrick Johnson who knows that it is better to build and not destroy like the Hulk. Check out the gallery over on ScrewAttack for more great pictures.

WD Unveils Crazy Fast Velociraptor Duo External Hard Drive

I don’t know why but I always want to have the fastest components in my computer that I can find. It’s not like I can drag race my computer against the guy across the street in some sort of grudge match, but I still have this unnatural desire for the fastest computer hardware around. Western Digital has unveiled a new external hard drive that really speaks to the computer geek in me.

velocirapt

The drive is called the My Book Velociraptor Duo and it packs a pair of 10,000 RPM 1 TB hard drives. That gives you data access speeds similar to what you’d find in an external hard drive with SSDs inside while getting 2 TB of total capacity. The speed isn’t only from the 10000 RPM internal drives either.

Western Digital also fits the external storage device with a pair of Thunderbolt ports. The company says that the external storage device is capable of real-world data transfer rates of up to 400 MB/s. The dual Thunderbolt ports allow you to daisy chain other devices to get even more storage. The system also supports RAID 0 and RAID 1. All this performance isn’t cheap, though – the Velociriraptor Duo lists for a penny less than $900(USD), though it’s likely to retail for a little bit less.

Lenovo IdeaCentre A520 shrinks a winner and adds Windows 8

This week the folks at Lenovo have revealed an all-in-one computer by the name of IdeaCentre A520 – a smaller version of the A720 we reviewed quite recently – with Windows 8 and 10-point multi-touch greatness. This machine is still able to adjust its display from -5 to 90 degrees flat, works with Ivy Bridge – 3rd Gen Intel Core processors of all kinds (i3 up to i7) and comes with Windows 8 (64 bit) right out of the box. You’ll be working with unique touch-optimized applications and user interface updates with your basic build and will have the same great casing aesthetics as the A720 too.

In other words, we’ve got no reason to believe that this unit wont be a winner. The original was (and is) massive beyond comprehension, this one has been made for people that like the design of the A720 but want to keep it a bit smaller for more realistic human-sized rooms. You’ve got a 23-inch full HD (1920 x 1080 pixel resolution) IPS LCD display working with Intel® HD Graphics 4000 / optional NVIDIA GeForce 615 2G/1G – and there’s two parts to this equation.

First you’ve got the monitor which measured in at 561×345.9×21.5 mm (22.08×13.61×0.84 inches). Then you’ve got the base which is 337x32x210.8 mm (13.26×1.25 x8.29 inches). The whole thing is still going to be relatively heavy at 9.8 kg (21.60lb), but the size is what matters here the most – instead of the massive A720′s beastly proportions you’ve got, again, a human sized monster on your hands.

The Lenovo IdeaCentre A520 will be popping up in October 2012 starting at $999 USD – also a very human-sized price. Have a peek at the rest of our Lenovo coverage of IFA 2012 and stick around for future reviews as well!

The Lenovo IdeaPad Z Series has been revealed this week with the Z500 and Z400 bringing up to Genuine Windows 8 Pro to a set of study, thin, and powerful notebooks. Unlike many of the devices revealed this week, the Z Series does not have a touchscreen interface. Instead you’ll be working with an Intelligent Touchpad optimized for Windows 8 and its touch- and gesture-friendly UI.

This line of notebooks works with up to Ivy Brindge, the 3rd Generation Intel Core processor line up to i7, and up to Genuine Windows 8 Pro for your next-generation computing needs. You’ll be choosing between the Z500 with its 15.6-inch backlit LED HD display at 1366 x 768 pixel resolution and the Z400 with its 14-inch backlit LED HD display at 1366 x 768 pixel resolution as well. Both notebooks have 16:9 ratio widescreen displays as well.

Lenovo’s Z Series comes with Bluetooth and wi-fi connectivity as well as an integrated DVD reader/writer – this drive also functions as a Blu-ray Disc drive as well. This machine line works with stereo speakers with Dolby Home Theatre v4 audio certification for what the group lets you know is definite Immersive Sound. The Z Series includes Lenovo’s choice OneKey Recovery system for easy data backup and as well as recovery.

Lenovo IdeaCentre B340 and B545 bring all-in-one touch to Windows 8

If you’re looking for the Lenovo style and grace and want 10-finger multi-touch action on an all-in-one beast of a computer this Fall, you’re in luck with the B Series. The Lenovo IdeaCentre B340 and B545 bring the heat with two giant displays – the B545 working with a 23-inch frameless screen and the B340 having a 21.5-inch screen which can also function as a high-def TV running independent of the PC’s OS. These are two odd beasts, that’s for certain – and certainly a good thing for the new Windows universe!

The B340 is the one of these two units that works with optional OneKey TV with the ability to turn the display into a high definition television with one button click. When you’ve got this function activated, you’re able to watch TV without powering on the PC at all – cool stuff! You’ll be working on a 21.5-inch Full HD touch-screen display with a collection of specifications that out-do this device’s predecessor, the B320, which was the first computer to have OneKey TV working on it.

This is the second – working with an independent hardware TV circuit board inside the PC to operate separate from the PC’s board. The B320 is also able to allow you to watch picture-in-picture so you can have your PC and TV on the screen simultaneously. As Lenovo notes, “this technology is the first hardware TV solution to be put into an all-in-one PC.

The B340 also has Dolby Advanced Audio V2 as well as NVIDIA GeForce 615 1GB/512M graphics with DirectX 11. You’ll be working with up to 8GB DDR3 memory at 1600MHz and you’ll have the option to have an integrated DVD reader/writer or Blu-ray Disc drive. This AIO can connect with Bluetooth 2.1 if you choose it to be able and you’ve got wi-fi connectivity as well. The IdeaCentre B340 and B345 will be available October 2012 starting at US $599.

Then there’s also the B545, a device which was available in April starting at $699 USD. This all-in-one PC has a 23-inch frameless screen with 10-point multi-touch for Windows 8 – in the near future, that is – as well as 3D vision. You’ll be working with this device in the very near future with up to Genuine Windows 8 as well as the AMD A10 quad-core processor under the hood. You can add on an integrated Blu-ray Disc drive. This device also has HDMI-out as well as HDMI-in with TV tuner – but not quite the same magic tech the B340 has with TV – separate stuff!

Check out the rest of our Lenovo coverage at IFA 2012 and stick around as the more pops up all week long – and over the weekend, too!

Lenovo IdeaPad Y Series brings UltraBay for interchangeable upgrades

This week the folks at Lenovo have revealed their IdeaPad Y Series with a brand new interchangeable HDD bay they’ve called the UltraBay. This HDD bay is able to swap out for dual-graphics cards, increased storage space, an an additional fan for cooling. Outside this is either the Y500 with a 15.6-inch display or the Y400 with a 14-inch display – and notebooks in black and red!

This machine is made to be changed around, that’s for certain. You’ve got up to 3rd generation Intel Core i7 processor options and the ability to add up to NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M dedicated graphics with NVIDIA OptimusTM technology. You also have up to 16GB DDR 3 memory, up to 1TB HDD storage, and up to 16GB SSD cache. You can also work with an interchangeable DVD reader/writer or Blu-ray Disc drive!

This beast works with one of Lenovo’s own Intelligent Touchpads optimized for Windows 8 and their next-generation touch- and gesture-friendly interface. The Y Series has an all-ways on USB port for charging of USB-powered (charged) mobile devices even when the notebook is not powered on itself – unplugged, even.

On the sides you’ve got 2x USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0 port, a 6 in 1 memory card reader, 1/8 inch Stereo Headphone Output Jack/ SPIDIF, 1/8 inch Input Jack Microphone, and HDMI out. The full beast is either 387x259x15.5-36.0mm (13.77×9.64×0.59-1.29 inches) for the larger model or 350x 245x 15-33mm (13.77×9.64×0.59-1.29 inches) and both have a battery that’s quoted at 3 hours of productive usage without recharge. These notebooks will have specifications that vary by region – and both will be available October 2012 starting at US $649. Stay tuned for more Lenovo action at IFA 2012!

Archos GamePad Tablet Looks Like PS Vita XL

My millions of imaginary readers know how disappointed I am at the lack of a universal gaming controller for iOS devices. Archos added a pinch of envy to that disappointment when they unveiled the GamePad, a 7″ Android tablet that has physical buttons and two analog sticks. The best part? Archos claims to have developed a “mapping and game recognition” software that will allow virtual controls to be mapped to its buttons, even for games that don’t actually support physical controllers.

archos gamepad gaming tablet

On the hardware side, all we know is that the GamePad has a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU and a Mali 400mp quad-core GPU. Archos also didn’t specify which version of Android will run on the tablet, although the company did say that they decided to build the GamePad when they saw that Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich supported game controllers. Finally, Archos claims that there are already “over a thousand” Android games that work with the GamePad’s physical controls. I hope we can see a demo of this tablet soon and I really hope it takes off so everyone else can step their tablet game up.
