Phinergy Air Car Concept

Phinergy Air Car ConceptEveryone wants to be green and eco-friendly these days, and this is a good phase to go through, preferably when it ends up being a kind of lifestyle, too. Phinergy, a company that is based in Israel, is developing a new kind of electric vehicle that would definitely make rides like the Nissan Leaf look archaic, and I am not talking about just in terms of design, but more importantly, technology, too. Phinergy’s all-electric “Air Car” will rely on a regular lithium-ion battery for local and short trips, while those who want to embark on longer journeys, such as walking into Mordor to destroy the One Ring, will have a new kind of metal-air battery to help them along.

The metal-air battery relies on plain water as a catalyst, where it will consume its aluminum plates slowly but surely to generate power. There will be 50 aluminum plates in total, which are adequate to provide enough energy to drive 20 miles, and when it works with the whole metal-air battery, you get around 1,000 more miles to the ride’s range, now how about that? This is, of course, not counting the 100 miles that you can eke out from its lithium-ion battery. 2017 seems to be the date that Phinergy is gunning for to have the Air Car roll out to the masses.

Hyundai Unveils E4U Concept Personal Vehicle

The New York Auto Show is currently going on in New York City until this Sunday, but Hyundai decided to show off its newest in personal mobility vehicles at the Seoul Motor Show last week. Hyundai’s E4U is a concept vehicle which was designed by the company’s Advanced Design Department and can actually be driven in any direction.

The E4U doesn’t use tires like a traditional vehicle would. Instead, it uses a rotating semispherical  part that spins horizontally. The semisphere is in a titled position to help generate drive, while two stabilizing wheels located at the rear of the vehicle keep it moving straight. Two pedals are located inside of the driver’s cockpit which allow the E4U to tilt in a certain way where it can be moved forward or backwards, depending on the pedal that has been pushed. The driver of the vehicle admits it does take some getting used to. (more…)

Vibrating Helmet Guides Firefighters Through Smoke

Vibrating Helmet Guides Firefighters Through Smoke

Firefighters have a tough job. They risk their lives to save the lives of others. Often they might find themselves in a smoke filled room where visibility is quite bad. This could seriously hamper their relief efforts, while putting their life at risk as well. A group of researchers at the University of Sheffield have come up with an interesting prototype helmet. This helmet vibrates against the forehead of the person wearing it, this vibration is an indication of objects and obstacles nearby.

The team fitted a standard Rosenbauer firefighting helmet with vibrational pads and ultrasound sensors. The helmet sends out pulses of ultrasound and analyzes the echos to determine the proximity of objects. It responds by activating the vibrational pads facing the object, thus giving a tactile directional alert to the wearer. The concept is pretty intelligent, particularly the usage of vibrational pads to let the firefighter know of objects nearby. Any other method might not be as effective, as firefighters generally don’t have their hands free to operate equipment other than that required for their relief efforts. It can also be further developed to help visually impaired people, the possibilities are endless.

GIGS.2.GO Is A Handy Way Of Keeping USB Flash Drives With You

GIGS.2.GO Is A Handy Way Of Keeping USB Flash Drives With YouDon’t you just hate it when you’re out and you need to save a file but forgot your USB drive? While there are some out there diligent enough to keep a USB flash drive on their keychain, not everyone does so which makes this GIGS.2.GO concept so much more interesting. Designed by Kurt Rampton and the BOLTgroup, GIGS.2.GO is a credit card-sized set of USB drives whose casings are made from 100% post-consumer molded paper pulp, allowing the user to label each drive accordingly. As you can see in the image above, there are four USB drives attached and to use one, all the user would have to do is tear it off. We can only imagine how handy this will be when it comes to meetings or classes where you find yourself in the need to save files to take home. We’re not sure if you will be able to purchase GIGS.2.GO, but it is a pretty cool idea and should fit in most wallets or purses – what do you guys think?

Subaru WRX concept revealed at New York Auto Show

The WRX is arguably Subaru’s most popular car ever, so it makes sense that the company would be addressing the model during the New York Auto Show this week, and indeed they did. Subaru unveiled the WRX concept, which is a completely new design for the WRX series, and while the overall shape of the car looks rather chunky (especially from the side view), we have to see it’s mighty sleek.

Subaru says that their focus for this WRX concept is based around “sharp handling, AWD grip, and turbo power.” Overall the new concept sits a lot lower and has a more streamlined design than the 2013 Impreza WRX, and it’s just a few inches wider at the wheel base. The car also has a larger grille and an impressive set of headlights.

The car also has a carbon fiber roof top to cut down on weight, which is certainly an interesting approach, given that most manufacturers go with a carbon fiber hood in order to cut down the weight of a car. However, the car comes with that iconic hood scoop that proves it’s a true WRX. The car keeps the 4-door style, but it looks a lot more like a coupe now.

Overall, it’s a completely new car, but you can tell that Subaru left some things alone so that it still has some classic WRX styling to it. Again, this is only a concept, so some of the features you see may not hit the actual production model, and it’s not said when this car will hit the assembly line, but hopefully it’s sooner rather than later.

A Wooden Chair That’s As Comfy As a Cushion

Whether at school, at the DMV, or at an over-crowded family get-together; we’ve all done time sitting on a cheap, uncomfortable wooden chair. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With just a little flexible polymer added to the mix a wooden chair doesn’t need a cushion to be comfy. More »

iPhone 6 Concept Looks Pretty Interesting

iPhone 6 Concept Looks Pretty InterestingIt is safe to assume that the iPhone 5S will most likely resemble the iPhone 5, with the main differences being under the hood. However the question is what will Apple go with for the iPhone 6, presumably with a release for 2014? While we will have to wait for the inevitable leaks or official announcement, designer Abel Verdezoto I has come up with his own concept of what the iPhone 6 could look like (pictured above). This particular concept is a pretty drastic departure from the current design and loses the more rounded edges in favor of sharper corners. It also appears to have taken on a chrome-like edge which is reminiscent of the iPhone 3GS. We’re not sure what sort of size we are looking at here, but if we had to guess, it’s probably based on the rumored 4.8” rumored display that the iPhone 6 is supposed to feature. To be honest this particular concept reminds us a bit of the Sony Xperia Z, which is a good thing, but what do you guys say, aye or nay?

Puzzle Keyboard Concept Sure To Make Heads Spin

Puzzle Keyboard Concept Sure To Make Heads SpinNow here is a concept design by Wan Fu Chun that is known as the Puzzle Keyboard, where it will adopt a modular approach when it comes to typing. I guess you can call this a custom keyboard which will fit right into your needs, after all, we are all created differently, and hence, have very different typing styles from one another. Assuming there are a bunch of keys that never feel the touch of your fingertips after all these years, all you need to do is remove them from sight to minimize the entire keyboard. Not only does it simplify the layout, it also helps you make better use of space.

Sounds as though a modular keyboard might catch on, but considering how the extra keys do not create any trouble of sorts even when they are on the keyboard itself, it might not be able to sell too well. After all, there is a learning curve to get used to with a modular keyboard, and sometimes, your brain might just miss the familiar sights of the likes of F6 and F7 keys, in addition to either left or right Shift and Control keys.
