NYC Prototype Payphones Offer A Glimpse Into Phone Booth Future

With the rise in the popularity of mobile phones, the lowly payphone has been completely pushed aside as being only useful for homeless patrons to privately relieve themselves. Stumbling onto a payphone will probably result in an empty housing where an actual payphone once sat, but New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is looking to change that as he’s looking to upgrade the city’s 11,000 payphones.

Bloomberg issued a challenge a few months ago with the Reinvent Payphones Initiative to crowdsource ways to upgrade New York City’s payphones. The results of the challenge have produced five final prototypes that range from a complete reinvention of the traditional phone booth, to a kiosk that can record changes in the environment.

Unfortunately, the prototypes that are being shown won’t replace any of New York City’s payphones, but instead be used in order to inspire what the final decision becomes. Considering any of these five final prototypes would drastically change how people would use payphones in New York City, we can’t fully understand the reasoning behind asking for prototypes, to only turn them down to build their own payphones that are inspired by said prototypes.

Concept Unicorn Windows Phone Concept By Alcatel Looks Interesting

If you love concept phones, then perhaps you will be able to get a kick out of this. Dubbed the Concept Unicorn, this designed was cooked up by Jet Ong, a senior industrial designer at Alcatel Mobile and based on his concept, it looks like it is a Windows Phone device that comes with a flip cover of its own. Yes we know that you could buy flip covers from third party accessory makers, but in this case, Ong has designed an Alcatel device with the flip cover being part of the phone itself. Essentially it’s a flip phone albeit a rather large one.

The flip cover was cover the display of the phone when not in use, and when flip open, it can be folded back much like a reporter’s notebook. According to the video, within that fold itself is a somewhat hidden USB port that can be used to charge the device. So far we like what we see although we do not know if this is indicative of Alcatel’s future plans for Windows Phone devices. Either way if you have a couple of minutes to spare, check it out in the video above or head on over to Jet Ong’s Behance portfolio to see more of his works.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Concept Is A Mashup Of Previous Samsung Devices

We’re sure that some of you guys might have been disappointed to learn that the alleged Samsung Galaxy S4 leak turned out to be a mere mockup. Alternatively given its design, we’re sure that some of you guys also felt a sense of relief. In any case while we will have to wait until the 14th of March to see what the Galaxy S4 will look like, designer Martin Hajek teamed up with the folks at GottaBeMobile to come up with their own concept of the Galaxy S4. This concept is based on the rumors of the Galaxy S4 to date, as well as being based on the previous designs of Samsung’s Galaxy S series of Android smartphones.

We have to admit that based on what we see in the concept, their concept of the Galaxy S4 looks pretty sleek as it merges the design of the Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 and the Galaxy Note 8.0. It sports a plastic body which has been confirmed by a Samsung executive, a 4.99” Full HD display, a 13MP camera, a front-facing camera that will be utilized for rumored features like the Eye Scroll, as well as Smart Stay which made its debut in the Galaxy S3. Either way if you have a couple of minutes to spare, check it out in the video above and let us know the comments below on what you think!

WADI Affordable Water Filtering Technology Powered By Solar Energy

[CeBIT 2013] For people who live in industrial and developed countries, access to clean water is never really an issue and we tend to forget that a huge number of people on this planet do not enjoy that type of access. Consequently, according to water.org, over 3.4 million humans die each year from a water related disease.

Today at CeBIT, I met with Martin Wesian, founder and CEO, Helioz, the company behind WADI, an innovative and affordable water filtering device powered by solar energy.

iPhone 6 Concept Features 4.8-Inch Screen, Lack Of Home Button

iPhone 6 Concept Features 4.8 Inch Screen, Lack Of Home Button

Just last week, we heard a rumor of the iPhone 6 featuring a polycarbonate body and a 4.5-inch screen. Even though the iPhone 6 is most likely a year away from officially being debuted as many people are expecting the iPhone 5S to be released this year, a set of concept images for the iPhone 6 have been released today, and they look mighty impressive.

The concept images created by Martin Hajek feature an iPhone 6 with a 4.8-inch screen, no home button and a look that resembles the iPad Mini. The iPhone 6 in Hajek’s concept isn’t as large as the Galaxy Note 2, but could certainly compete with the rumors 4.99-inch Galaxy S4 and the 4.8-inch display of the HTC One.

Removing the home button on the iPhone 6 may be a bit of a stretch considering how much iOS relies on it. If Apple considers making any changes to its home button, we think they’d introduce a slimmer button rather than nixing it from the iPhone altogether. Seeing how Apple updated its 30-pin dock connector with the slimmer Lightning connector, we think the company knows slim is in.

Socialmatic Targets 2014 Launch

Socialmatic Targets 2014 LaunchIt was sometime in the final quarter of 2012 when we brought you word that the Socialmatic concept will be brought to life, although back then, it was mentioned that there were definite plans to introduce it to the masses sometime in the middle of this year, and it seems that life has thrown a spanner in the works of Socialmatic’s progress from concept to reality, which means we will most probably only be able to see Socialmatic hit the mass market sometime next year. The big question is this, will Socialmatic still be relevant by then, and will there be a ready and willing market to purchase it?

Well, Socialmatic did announce a new branding deal with Polaroid for this Instagram-looking camera which basically enables you to add filters of your choice, as well as print your photos in an instant via an integrated Zink printer, accompanied by Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a 4.3-inch touchscreen display and a custom operating system. Will “better late than never” apply here? Only time will tell.

Boompack Boombox Backpack: Wearing Music On Your Back

Boompack Boombox Backpack: Wearing Music On Your BackRemember the days when Boombox were the most talked about things. Well a concept backpack called Boompack by Massimo Battaglia could just bring back the Boombox revolution.

The Boompack backpack quite literally incorporates a backpack and a boombox. It sports 8 way speakers and 100 watts of sound power to make your music stand out. The backup comes with a rechargeable battery that can stay on for up to 6 hours. The cool feature of this concept backpack is a 200-lumen pico projector that transforms any place into your own projection room.

The backpack also features 32GB internal memory and SD card slot for expansion.  The concept calls for Bluetooth connectivity. It also features USB port as well as connectivity for external devices.  The backpack will sport a hidden compartment for docking smartphones. Its design is made in such a way as to make it impact resistant and water resistant. It will have front and back radio control and if another boompack backpack is nearby, it will auto-sync with it. It also features a stand, so that the backpack won’t fall down if you put it on the floor. At the moment this backpack only exists in concepts, but it just might make it out of the concept phase into an actual design.

Apple iWatch Team Stands At 100-Strong

Apple iWatch Team Stands At 100 StrongSo, a smartwatch that is being developed by Apple is no longer a secret, and some have even gone ahead by coining it to be the iWatch. Well, Bloomberg reports that Apple has actually assigned a team of approximately 100 product designers to work on a wristwatch-like device which could possibly perform its fair share of tasks which are currently handled by the iPhone and iPad. The team is said to have expanded in the past year alone, where it will include managers, marketing group executives, and software and hardware engineers who did have experience working on the iPhone and iPad before.

With at least 100 folks manning the iWatch ship, such a size would definitely suggest that Apple has moved beyond the experimentation phase in this smart timepiece’s development, don’t you think so? An analyst claimed that there would be far more folks who would not mind wearing an Apple watch compared to a pair of Google glasses – do you agree with that particularly bold statement or not?
