BlackBerry Windermere Concept Looks Pretty Sleek

BlackBerry Windermere Concept Looks Pretty SleekSo the other day we caught a glimpse at an alleged BlackBerry prototype called the Windermere. The device when it was first leaked was thought to be an older BlackBerry prototype, perhaps one that might have been cancelled, but it turns out that wasn’t the case, or so the rumors clam. In any case the leaked photos were somewhat blurry and hard to see, but thanks to a recent concept rendering made by a fan, we now have a better and clearer idea of what the Windermere could look like if it were to be released as a final product.

However it should be noted that this isn’t strictly the Windermere based on the leaked images. Most notably is due to the fact that its screen seems more conventional, versus the prototype we saw which had a 1:1 touchscreen, which in all honesty was an odd choice to begin with. However the concept does keep its three row keyboard design, and with the elongated screen, it certainly looks pretty good. For those who didn’t follow the rumors, the reason behind BlackBerry’s choice of a three row keyboard design is because apparently BlackBerry will be incorporating gestures into the keyboard itself, allowing users to use gestures to pull up additional keys, such as symbols, as well as swiping. What do you guys think? Yay or nay?

A Brilliant In-Car Touchscreen Interface You Never Need To Look At

A Brilliant In-Car Touchscreen Interface You Never Need To Look At

Touchscreen displays in our cars aren’t going away anytime soon. So designer Matthaeus Krenn figured that now was as good a time as any to radically improve their interfaces, replacing grids of ugly buttons and options with an elegant and minimal multi-touch UI —-that the driver doesn’t need to look at.

Giant Interactive Pinwheel Concept: Reverse Windmills

George Zisiadis – one of the designers behind the sweet mistletoe drone – shares with us one of his latest concepts: a public art installation on the facade of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History filled with large pinwheels. Visitors will be able to make the pinwheels move by blowing into horns located around the installation.

giant pinwheel installation concept by George Zisiadis 620x401magnify

George said that there will be about a dozen oversize pinwheels in total, with the largest one about 10ft. in diameter. But visitors won’t need to blow as hard as they can into the horns, because the pinwheels are actually powered by electric motors. Microphones will be hidden in the horns to detect when someone is blowing into them.

To encourage interaction, George will make it so that blowing into one horn triggers only some of the pinwheels. Therefore visitors will have to man all the horns at once to make all the pinwheels move simultaneously. Here’s George testing his prototype:

If the museum picks George’s concept, visitors may be able to play with the pinwheels this summer. Good luck, George!

Snow Tires With Studs That Retract At the Push of a Button

Studded tires are probably the best way to avoid sliding all over the place on slippery, icy roads. But when that layer of snow and ice is gone, they’re not particularly friendly to bare asphalt. Nokian Tyres, though, has developed this concept tire with studs that extend and retract with the push of a button on your dashboard.

    Honda XS-1 Spotted In India

Honda XS 1 Spotted In IndiaJust what are concepts and prototypes there for? Well, if you were to ask this particular question to the likes of Honda, the company would most probably answer your question this way – by shoving the Honda XS-1 in front of your face. The Honda XS-1 was spotted over at the 12th Auto Expo 2014 in India, where it happens to be a creative study model that in reality, makes up part of Honda’s vision for the future of manufacturing. This particular ride happens to be based on Honda’s original M/M (man maximum, machine minimum) concept, where it will fuse together a pair of different values, a styling along the lines of being sporty on the outside as well as amazing spaciousness.

True Love Tester Concept Bra Keeps Hyperventilating Males Away

We have seen some pretty interesting conceptual bras in the past, and this time around, here is yet another which might just capture your imagination – although it might not make its way to lingerie stores anytime soon. Known as the True Love Tester, this particular lingerie requires the presence of catecholamine, which is a hormone that is secreted by the adrenal glands, before it can be removed. It does not sound all that romantic, right? Well, if it helps prevent creeps and other overzealous males from losing their minds, why not? The True Love Tester is the brainchild of Japan’s Ravijour, where the bra itself is connected to a smartphone app using Bluetooth, where it can be unhooked only when sensors that have been integrated into the bra detect “true love” – or rather, catecholamine.

iWatch Concept Is A Thing Of Beauty

iwatch-conceptThe iWatch from Apple could be the next big thing in the wearables market, but that also remains to be seen considering how fickle the nature of the consumer electronics environment is. Having said that, most of the stuff that Apple touches in recent memory (I am referring to the past decade or so) tends to turn into gold, and for good reason, too. The iPod was truly a beautiful MP3 player when it was first introduced, and let us not even go into its MacBook Air, MacBook, iPhone, and the iPad. Having said that, how about a smartwatch? The alleged iWatch which will allegedly see its display panels manufactured by LG does seem to be shaping up nicely, but we do not have an actual snapshot of the device just yet. Here is a concept by designer Todd Hamilton to keep us happy for the moment, where it does seem to have been specially modeled after the Nike FuelBand.

SaveOneLife Mine Detector Fits Into Your Shoe

SaveOneLife Mine Detector Fits Into Your ShoeWe are living in an age of unprecedented peace and prosperity, but let us not kid ourselves – there are still parts of the world which are torn by civil wars as well as abject poverty. Landmines also pose a huge issue in affected areas, long after the drums of war have subsided, but what has been left behind by the previous regime still remains. Well, Colombia is one such countries, where years of guerrilla warfare have seen plenty of landmines remain buried underneath. Meant to protect certain plantations or other structures in the past, these have resulted in the death of over 10,000 civilians and soldiers alike since 1990. Removing landmines is a dangerous job, but Bogota design firm Lemur Studio intends to deliver on their SaveOneLife project.

Airlines, Listen Up: Here’s the Boarding Pass You Should Be Using

Airlines, Listen Up: Here's the Boarding Pass You Should Be Using

It hasn’t been a great decade for air travel. And while crappily designed boarding passes aren’t at the very top of my list of axes to grind with the airline industry, they’re more important than you might think. Just take a look at this great version by UK designer Peter Smart for proof.
