Pocket Tablet concept makes good use of flexible OLED displays

Phablets seem to be the in thing these days, and if you’re wondering what that is, it’s basically a phone + tablet, i.e. a device that blurs the line between smartphone and tablet. The Samsung Galaxy Note is a perfect example of such a device. However if you’re the sort that believes that 5.3”-5.5” is still too small for a tablet, then this concept design by Patrik Eriksson might be worth checking out. Pictured above is a folding device that when folded together resembles a smartphone. However when unfolded, it becomes a tablet thanks to its flexible OLED display that hides the hinge in the middle. This allows users to slip the device into their pockets and transform it into a full sized tablet when needed. We’re not sure why the designer chose Sony as the brand, perhaps he was inspired by the Tablet P, who knows? In any case foldable devices have been done before, like the Sony Tablet P and the Kyocera Echo, but we admit that we like Eriksson’s design and the use of a flexible OLED. What do you guys think? Would you be interested in such a device, or would you rather keep your smartphone and tablet separate?

Jolla concept device whets your appetite

There is one thing about conceptual devices and ideas that capture your attention – not only are they absolutely fantastic in terms of hardware specifications, bordering on the impossible sometimes, but it does not seem too far fetched, either. The thing is, most of the time, conceptual ideas of hardware tend to go beyond current constraints in the world of physics, but you could say in one sense of the word that our world was built on fantasy, right? After all, who would have thought that men would be able to fly in the sky one day, without using wings made out of wax to boot. What you see above is a conceptual handset from a fan, where it is dubbed the Jolla concept. (more…)

Batman’s Tumbler vehicle gets reimagined as an F1 racing car

Now it’s safe to assume that as depicted in the movies, Batman’s Tumbler vehicle is not only capable of withstanding massive amounts of abuse, but is pretty quick as well, so what happens if the Tumbler were taken and redesigned as an F1 vehicle? What sort of speeds could we be looking at here? Unfortunately we may never find out, but thanks to KnightVision3D, he has come up with a concept rendering of a Batman Tumbler vehicle in a formula one racing car design. As pictured above, it looks pretty darn good! Powered by jet turbines, it even comes with hydraulic flaps. Now we since we’re not car designers nor racers, we can’t really speak for its realism nor its aerodynamics, but as far as designed is concerned, we certainly love what we see, and given Bruce Wayne’s massive fortune (albeit fictional), we don’t see why he wouldn’t build himself one of these in the future!

This sci-fi inspired LED watch looks pretty good

Tron is a movie that has no doubt inspired plenty of sci-fi designs and this concept watch design by Alan from the USA is no different. Inspired by Tron: Legacy and 2001: A Space Odyssey, this watch features a square face with an LED face on a silver metal strap. According to its designer, telling the time on this watch is reportedly quick and intuitive, with the outer white circle representing the minutes in 5 minute blocks, while the blue ring in the middle teling the hours. The blocks in the middle represents 1 minute blocks, so minutes will be read via the white ring plus the number of white blocks in the middle. It has a very clean interface and pretty sleek looking to boot, plus given its simple design we expect it would not be impossible to manufacture. So if you like what you see, pop on over to Tokyo Flash to vote on it and who knows, it could eventually be made a reality!

This Yin/Yang inspired timepiece looks pretty unique

While watches were originally designed to be a practical way of telling time, thanks to fashion and technology, watches have become more than that. If you prefer a less conventional looking watch, Erik from Columbia has come up with a concept watch which seems to have been inspired by the Yin/Yang symbol. It features two faces, with each face representing a six hour period, while in between those two faces is a progress line bar which is used to tell the minutes. As you can see in the rendering above, there are several counters on the faces of the watch, and each are used to represent 5 minutes. While it might not be very straight forward or easy to tell the time at a glance looking at this watch, in terms of design we have to admit that it is very sleek and rather unique in nature and wouldn’t mind wearing it ourselves! If you’d like more details about this Yin/Yang timepiece or to vote on whether it should get made, head on over to Tokyo Flash’s website for the details!

Silent Falcon solar-powered UAV gets launched

Silent Falcon UAS Technologies officially announced the Silent Falcon solar electric unmanned aerial system (UAS) at the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) conference in Las Vegas early this week. Silent Falcon is the result of the company’s collaboration with Bye Aerospace to build a small tactical UAS that’s portable for long-range intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The Silent Falcon uses thin film photo voltaic (TFPV) solar energy collection and lithium polymer batteries for energy storage, providing long-range flight endurance of up to 14 hours.

During night time, however, the solar-powered UAV can only fly up to six hours running on battery power. The Silent Falcon has a top speed of 112 km/h with an operational flying altitude from 100 feet. Other notable features include an electro-optical, infrared and laser pointer sensor, a silent and highly efficient propulsion system, a lightweight carbon fiber composite structure, and three interchangeable wing sizes to easily adapt to mission endurance requirements. The Silent Falcon is still in its preproduction phase, but the company says that it will be entering production sometime next year.

Lego motorized Tumbler and The Bat vehicles will bring out the Batman in you

Lego builder Peer Kreuger was able to build Lego models of the highly fantasized vehicles from The Dark Knight Rises hit movie. But they are not just your ordinary Lego blocks. That’s because Kreuger was able do motorized versions of the Tumbler as well as of The Bat (well, not totally). Basically, Kreuger’s Tumbler, available in black and brown, have LED lights on them and boy they look amazing.

The Bat on the other hand, seen in the flick as Batman’s favorite ride, is still motorized but doesn’t have the ability to fly. Kreuger has posted images of his latest creations on Lego’s official custom builder website Cuusoo, so that you can vote for the two toy concepts and help make the, a reality for you boys out there. He was also able to prepare a cool and almost-realistic video of the Tumblers and The Bat in action. I got to admit that they pretty much look like the ones used by Bruce Wayne in the movie. Do you agree? Check out the video after the break. (more…)

EyeRing voice-activated augmented reality device for the blind

Technology has paved the way for new advances in the field of medicine. We’ve already seen apps such as the Busalert app and the Georgie Android app for the visually impaired. But the researchers over at MIT were able to develop a camera-equipped ring that could help the visually impaired identify objects and read text. It’s called EyeRing, and its creators describe it as a finger-worn device that allows you to point at an object, take a photo, and hear feedback about what it is you just focused on. Pattie Maes, a professor in MIT’s Media Lab, says that the EyeRing can also work as a navigation or translation aid.

It can even help children learn to read. The EyeRing also offers aural feedback through a wearable device. Printed with plastic using a 3-D printer, the augmented reality ring also has a small camera, a processor, and Bluetooth connectivity. A simple double-click to a button on the ring’s side and a voice command will initiate the process. EyeRing can be set to either identify text, colors, or even currency and prices on price tags. Just point the ring and click the button to capture a photo. Images are then sent to your Android smartphone via Bluetooth where an app will process the image and the generate the results via a digital voice. The team is currently working on an iPhone app as well.

Motorized LEGO Tumbler and Bat: Not The Toys We Need, But The Toys We Really Need

Expert LEGO builder Peerk Kreuger aka mahjqa is back with a timely creation that will make you soil your BatUndies. Kreuger made a couple of motorized versions of the Tumbler as well as of The Bat.

The Tumblers – available in Batman Black and Bane Brown Camo – have LED lights and seem to handle rough terrain quite well. The Bat has moving propellers but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t actually fly.

Still not impressed? Here:

Check out Kreuger’s Flickr page for more pictures. He’ll also probably upload the build instructions for both vehicles on his website, but this time he’s also put up proposals on Cuusoo for each vehicle. Will these cars remain unofficial vigilantes or will they be recognized superheroes of LEGO Gotham? You got the power. Make it happen.
