These concept speakers will fit nicely on your bike handles

Let’s face it, some of us enjoy riding our bikes while listening to music. Unfortunately riding a bike while having in-ear earphones or headphones on might not only constitute as being illegal, but it is potentially dangerous as well since it might not let us hear things like people, car horns and could distract us from the dangers on the road. Thanks to designer Yu Haibo, he has come up with a set of speakers that can be attached to the handle bars of bicycles.

While these are certainly not the first set of speakers we’ve seen created for bikes, we do like its clean and simple design. Plus the fact that it can be rotated 360 degrees means that you can either point the speakers at yourself, or you can point it away from you, i.e. sharing music with your group of cycling buddies. Not exactly a very difficult concept and we wouldn’t be surprised if a manufacturer were to adopt its design and put it into production. Cyclists out there, what do you guys think? Any takers?

This Nexus smartphone concept was inspired by the Olympics, utilizes a curved display

One of the pretty unique features of the Galaxy Nexus when it was launched last year was its display which is curved ever so slightly, lending to the possibility that fully flexible smartphones are indeed in the near future. It seems that inspired by the Olympics and perhaps thinking of what the next Nexus device should or would look like, engineer Dorian Lust has come up with a concept device.

Featuring a very obviously curved display, it seems that the idea here is for the phone to sit comfortable in the curve of your palm. Other features include a built-in kickstand, LEDs positioned on the edge of the device that acts as notification lights and also lights to help with the front-facing camera during low light situations, along with a fingerprint scanner for security and an IR blaster. It looks a bit odd and personally the design isn’t for me, but what do you guys think? Any takers?

This programmable t-shirt will display tweets and play music

We’ve come across t-shirts where lights can be displayed and pulsate according to the music around you, and also t-shirts which you can tap in order to simulate drum beats, but if you’ve always wanted a t-shirt that allowed you to program words or even display tweets, then this collaboration between interactive clothing company, Cutecircuit, and Scotch whiskey distillers Ballantine might be something worth checking out. According to its creators, the t-shirt, dubbed “tshirtOS” can be controlled wirelessly via an iPhone app. The t-shirt will also come with a built-in camera, speakers, microphone and an accelerometer in which users can share all sorts of things such as photos, music and tweets. If this sounds like a great idea and you wouldn’t mind getting your hands on the tshirtOS, unfortunately it is not for sale although you can register your interest at their Facebook page. No word if the t-shirt will ever be made a reality which means that this is pretty much a concept/prototype for now, but who wouldn’t mind getting their hands on one if it was on sale?

CSM Automatic Toilet will lay seat covers automatically for you [Concept]

Let’s face it, when it comes to public toilets, some places do it better than others, but at the end of the day, no one likes stepping into a wet toilet where they are pieces of tissue paper on the floor and suspicious drops of water (we hope) on the toilet seat. This is why the folks at Bluelarix Designworks have come up with a concept dubbed the CSM Automatic Toilet, which is basically a system that can be attached/mounted onto any toilet, thus reducing the costs of renovating the entire toilet which hopefully will make it less costly to adopt. Basically what it does is that instead of the user laying pieces of tissue paper on the toilet seat, the CSM Automatic Toilet will do that for you.

We assume that there is some kind of detection system so that users of the toilet will know that the toilet seat cover the CSM Automatic Toilet just laid down is clean. After using the toilet, the seat cover will then be flushed along with the contents of toilet bowl. Sounds pretty innovative and would save people the hassle of laying down their own tissue or bringing their own disposable seat covers, but what do you think? Would you love to see future toilets adopt something like the CSM Automatic Toilet?

Smart Connection smartwatch concept looks pretty futuristic

We’ve seen smartwatches before where they basically pair with a smartphone via Bluetooth. In case you’re wondering what a smartwatch is, not only does it display the time, but it also has the ability to display notifications from Facebook, Twitter, emails, messages, calls and etc. Some go as far as letting you answer your calls via your watch so you will never have to take the phone out of your pocket. That being said, Gabriel from France has come up with his own interpretation of a smartwatch which he has dubbed “Smart Connection”.

Featuring a clean and minimalist look, the hole in the center of the watch is not merely for aesthetic reasons and will actually contain LEDs that light up when notifications arrive. The watch will also be touchscreen based and will use colored touch-sensitive e-paper technology since it allows the display to bend. It will also come with the ability to control your music with media controls on the display and will also come with an integrated speaker and microphone to allow you to answer your calls and talk into the watch itself! Unfortunately this watch is only a concept at the moment but if you like what you see, pop on over to Tokyo Flash to leave your comments and rate the watch so that hopefully someday it will be made a reality.

Oculus Rift VR Headset: In Your Face 3D

While the best way to play games today is on huge monitors or HDTVs, a company called Oculus believes that future games will be better off with a much smaller display. The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset that displays 3D video, and it’s got the big fishes of the gaming industry nerdgasming in excitement.

oculus rift virtual reality 3d headset

The current Rift prototype has a 1280×800 resolution (640×400 per eye) and connects to PCs via DVI (or HDMI via an adapter). It’s hardly the first 3D headset to be developed, but Oculus claims that their product has two main advantages: a 110º field of view and ultra low latency. The two should make for a responsive and engaging experience. But Oculus is smart enough to know that great hardware must also be complemented with great software, which is why they’ve started a Kickstarter to offer developer kits and of course gain much needed publicity and support from game developers.

As I said, the Kickstarter fundraiser is aimed at developers, but everyone’s free to donate. A pledge of at least $300 (USD) gets you a developer kit. Along with the SDK, the kit comes with a version of Doom 3 that’s been optimized for the Rift. Hopefully Oculus can show off (simulated) footage of the Rift’s display. I wonder if this would work well with the Leap controller.

Built-In Suitcase Blanket Gives You a Clean Place to Sit in Airports or Anywhere [Wish You Were Here]

It seems most airports are designed so that the randomly scattered power outlets are located as far from the gate seats as possible. So while California College of Arts student Daye Kim’s actually designed the Whaletale suitcase mat for parents wrangling kids while traveling, it also seems incredibly handy for anyone dealing with an overcrowded airport. Warm Shoestring helps warms up your shoes

If there is one thing about winter that some people hate, it would be the bitter cold – especially for those who tend to live higher up in the north, the depressing way the mercury remains at the bottom of the thermometer for months on end is certainly not a memory worth cherishing, especially when you consider how the cost of keeping yourself warm had risen over the years no thanks to higher energy prices and what not. Here is a concept that might just help you change your super thick wool socks into something thinner – the Warm Shoestring, where this pair of shoelaces are said to be constructed from a specialized fire-resistant material. When you plug Warm Shoestring into an adapter, temperature of the shoelaces will be regulated so that the string will help warm up your shoes.

Do take note though, when it is really cold, and your shoes are a nice and warm spot, some creatures such as scorpions might want to choose to reside in the inside of your shoes so you might want to do a double take before slipping your feet in. This concept does not seem to be closer to reality anytime soon – perhaps it is time for a visit to Kickstarter?
