Fancy driving your car using your brain alone?

thought-carDriving a car has become second nature to many of us, and sometimes, it tends up as a reflex action that we do not pay too much attention to – which is a good thing most of the time, although there are moments when we take this particular moment for granted and start to focus on doing another thing such as checking out our e-mail, only to realize that we might have stepped on the brake a little too late shortly after, resulting in a fender bender afterwards. Well, I guess this is why a driverless car makes plenty of sense, although I am quite sure that it could prove rather disconcerting to some that you do not have full control over the vehicle in which you are traveling in. How about driving a car with your thoughts alone? Don’t you think that this would be cool beyond words?

This is what a bunch of engineering students over in India are working on. At Mount Zion College of Engineering and Technology, this particular project would involve converting a small van into a computer controlled vehicle, where the Emotiv EEG headset would function as a controller. We are talking about using off-the-shelf parts here, people, in order to get the job done – now how about that?

Of course, there are still plenty of questions which are left unanswered as at press time, as this particular concept would take years of refinement for it to become safe enough to drive. The thing is, how are we to know that our brain is able to tell the difference between switching gears and turning left while we are pre-occupied with the goings on at the office? What do you think of this proposition – does it sit down well with you? Do you think this is a better idea than a self-driving car?

Treat your dog and test his smarts

fooblr

Remember the Sharper Image. Well 3 former members of the design team got back together and made a great new time delayed puzzle feeding dog toy. It’s called the Foobler!

They’re down to the last few hours of their campaign. If they raise $80,000 in funding they’ll activate a new pledge level that will have a bluetooth controlled Foobler with iOS and Android Apps.

The Foobler combines the best of what’s available for dog puzzle toys. With the latest crop of time delay feeders. Now you can actually feed your dog measured amounts of kibble while they play throughout the day.

The dog is alerted in intervals of 15, 30, 60, or 90 minutes and called with a real bell. One of the six kibble containing pods will align, and when the dog plays with the Foobler, they can get the kibble to fall out to eat. It engages and entertains your pet every single meal.

It’s great to make sure your dog isn’t just grazing all day. Also you’ll know exactly how much you’re serving and when they’ll get it. It’s great for diabetic dogs that are both encouraged to move around, and to have more meals of smaller portions. Just think, you can now finally deliver exacting portions while away at work all day.

It’s easy to clean (seriously watch their video on kickstarter, you can hand wash, or toss it in the top shelf of the dishwasher).

They even has a print at home card to put under the tree for that last minute gift for Fido!

Check it out here on Kickstarter.

NKD AQUA POD offers filtered and supercharged water

nkd-aqua-podHaving clean drinking water is something that many of us might take for granted, especially for those of us who happen to live in a First World country. If you have ever made a trip to Third World and developing countries, you would know just how some people live with seemingly dirty water, and have to literally make do with what they have. With the NKD AQUA POD, it is one device which basically allows you to transform ordinary tap water into pure mountain quality spring water as you drink, or so it is claimed. The NKD AQUA POD is a Kickstarter project that is also the first of its kind in the world when it comes to portable water filtration as you will find out in greater detail below.

Just how is your water filtered and supercharged? Well, it claims to use “a 100% natural clean and green purification process” as you drink. While the standard issue water bottle’s structure has more or less remained the same for so many years, the NKD AQUA POD was developed with an intention to not only be functional, but pleasing to the eyes as well, resulting in a bottle for modern living. After all, what is the point of having the self-proclaimed “world’s best water” if it does not end up in the “world’s best bottle”?

The NKD AQUA POD works by sending water that you drink through a patent pending filter that is a snap to change, where it is touted to do away with chlorine taste and odor, not to mention filtering out around 99% of the bacteria in the water. It can also filter out heavy metals as long as the water you are drinking is from the municipal tap, while the gritty carbon taste that you normally experience from other carbon filters are also done away with. Not only that, your tongue will enjoy supercharged water with natural minerals and electrolytes that can be found in nature, and it uses the safest, most technologically advanced plastics which are FDA-approved plastics.

Podo – Take your Camera and Stick it

Unknown

It’s holiday time. A time when we often get to see friends and relatives that we haven’t had a chance to catch up with all year. Time for family dinners, parties…and pictures. I’m never in the pictures, because I’m the designated picture-taker. Someday, my little girl is going to wonder where I was during all her milestone moments, I’ll explain that I was always there, I was just behind the camera!

Well, I have a New Years Resolution, this coming year I’m going to be in on all the action. Check out The Podo, a wireless Bluetooth camera that can stick anywhere. Podo can stick to a wall, allow you to “check yourself out” at every angle, and then remotely snap the pic.Take group shots, family pics, covert images, or selfies. Never again will you have to leave yourself out of the memories.

Using the Podo is easy enough, simply stick Podo on the wall and open the associated app (Android and iOS) preview your poses, and snap the shots remotely over Bluetooth, now you are ready to edit, add some special effects and then share your photos on all your favorite social media sites.

Podo will take an 8 megapixel image and it will record HD video clips. The case features an LED ring to indicate status and shutter timer, and an on board accelerometer will keep you shooting straight. The battery will last a full day of normal use and the camera charges via micro-USB. Unfortunately, Podo isn’t available just yet, but you should keep an eye on their website at mypodo.com because for under 40 bucks, this could be fun.

Technology and Tastebuds – Digital Lollipops Could Taste like Turkey

dtl

Ah Thanksgiving, I believe it exists not only to remind us of all the things we have to be thankful for, but also to drive home the fact that eating is a wonderful thing. Of course too-much-turkey hangover, and a 5 pound weight gain overnight …not so much. If only we could have all the pleasure of food and snacks, with none of the pesky after effects.

Now, what if you could eat a nice leafy green salad, and have your tastebuds tell you that it was a bacon double cheeseburger with fried onions and extra ketchup? Well, it could happen, in fact, Nimesha Ranasinghe, a Ph.D. research scholar at the National University of Singapore, is in the process of developing a device that actually simulates flavors directly on the tip of your tongue, using a “lollipop” consisting of a silver electrode.

In fact, Nimesha and his team are able to reproduce our most established basic tastes, like, sweet, salty, sour and bitter, and by combining these flavors, a person’s taste receptors are fooled by simply varying the alternating current from the lollipop and slight but rapid changes in temperature. Imagine being able to one day believe you are tasting real food!

Where could this technology take us? I can think of a vast market for such a device. From dieters to diabetics being able to experience foods that shouldn’t be on the menu, to advertisers being able to offer up sample tastes of their next delicious offerings, to entertainment venues like movie theaters, where you would be able to taste what you see on screen. Yup, it could be huge… but for the time being, I’m sticking with my turkey and gravy – and then I’m going to take a nap.

Nissan Nismo smartwatch not quite ready for prime time yet

nissan-nismo-watchNissan might be the last name on your mind to have it announce that it is behind the latest smartwatch concept, considering how the company happens to be an auto manufacturer and not a consumer electronics player in a long shot. Well, this just goes to show how diversified some companies’ interests can be, and Nissan has just announced their conceptual Nissan Nismo smartwatch that will not hook up to your smartphone so that you have a “duplicate” of what kind of incoming notifications and calls you have, but rather, it would help connect the driver to the car, and vice versa.

For starters, the Nissan Nismo smartwatch’s main strength is to showcase Nissan’s intent to deliver biometric data that will help enhance driver performance and efficiency. Needless to say, their foray into this particular market segment would automatically make Nissan the first car manufacturer to develop a smartwatch that was specifically designed for drivers of Nissan Nismo cars. Provide drivers with real-time biometric data, it will also enable the driver to monitor the efficiency of their vehicle with average speed and fuel consumption readings; access vehicle telematics and performance data while on track; capture biometric data via a heart rate monitor; connect to the car using a smartphone app via Bluetooth Low Energy; and receive tailored car messages from Nissan.

Who knows what the future might bring? There are another three more key technologies that have been identified for future development, and they are ECG (Electrocardiogram) to help measure the intervals of the R-R rhythm of the heart and identify early fatigue; EEG (Electroencephalogram) Brainwave that is capable of monitoring the drivers’ levels of concentration and emotions while assisting athletes to get ‘In The Zone’; and Skin Temperature, where it will keep track of your core body temperature and hydration levels. Powered by a lithium battery, the Nissan Nismo Watch will be juiced up via microUSB and offers a battery life of more than a week under normal usage conditions.

FABtotum Personal Fabricator will let you create to your heart’s desire

FABtotum

When you think of the title ‘artist’ a moody, eclectic sort of person comes to mind. Of course, there is a myriad of artist-types out there, and with the rise of technology, there are more and more digital artists. Of course, just because the art is on a computer doesn’t mean that all of it is intangible (the concepts of abstract artists are a different story however). There is 3D modeling that can lead to printed sculptures, jewelry, and more. While 3D printers are becoming more widely available, they’re still pretty expensive, and only have one function. This is great for smaller projects, but what if your imagination is itching to do more?

For those who want a place to create anything their minds can think up, there is the FABtotum Personal Fabrication Device. This will let you do additive printing, 3 and 4 axis subtractive manufacturing, 3D scanning, and more. The printing and milling volume is 210 x 240 x 240 / (your milling bit height) mm. It can work with PLA and ABS plastic, foam, balsa, plywood, thin aluminum, and brass alloys. As this setup is not completely bound to one structure, you can disassemble it to add new parts which will provide even more functionality.

This isn’t meant to be some product that can be fully described and explained in one go, as it was made for those who want to think outside of the box. In essence, it can be whatever you want it to when it comes to fabrication. You can choose the get a fully assembled version or the DIY kit, but there will of course be a difference in price. The kit will cost around $1,000, and the fully finished package will cost around $1,100. There is also an option to buy a kit that comes without the electronics or motors which will cost around $700.

Fund raising over at indiegogo, found via Technabob.

Sprayable Energy will help you take on the day

Sprayable Energy
Caffeine comes to us in a variety of forms. There are fizzy energy drinks, infused candies, coffee, and more, but sometimes we overdo it. Having that extra 5 hour energy is just going to leave you with 10 hours of trembling. This is especially the case if you’re trying to make up for the sleep that didn’t happen the night before. On top of making you feel terrible at times, they cost you a pretty penny! While there’s nothing wrong with wanting a little extra pep in your step, what’s out there for people who don’t want to eat or drink something just to feel the effects?

Incorporating a workout into your morning routine can help, but it’s hard to make time for that so early in the day. If you don’t want to ingest energy, you can spritz it on with Sprayable Energy. This is a topical energy spray that you can put on as easily as cologne or perfume. This concoction is caffeine with a derivative of the naturally produced amino acid, tyrosine which helps it stay in liquid state so your skin can absorb it. It has no smell, color, doesn’t leave behind a sticky residue, and can be used in tandem with other cosmetic products.

One bottle will cost you $15, and will last for 2-3 weeks (160 sprays). You shouldn’t be putting on more than 24 spritzes a day, and they recommend only drinking something with a light amount of caffeine such as a soda, coffee, or tea. If this works as advertised, it would be great for waking you up before a meeting, concert, going to the gym, and more. It could definitely deter your desire for Starbucks some too, which will save you quite a chunk of change.

Wrist Charge phone charger needs your support

Just like how we have covered our fair share of portable wireless speakers over here on Coolest Gadgets in the past, another particular area where this particular niche gizmo is dime a dozen would be the phone charger. All phones come packed with their respective charger, although over the years, you would have realized that a single charger is good enough to play nice with a myriad of other phones, as long as they share the same connectors. Well, this begs the question, are all phone chargers created equal? The correct answer would be “No”, as evident by the flaming hope that this Kickstarter project, the Wrist Charge phone charger, claims.

What makes the Wrist Charge phone charger so different from the rest is its highly portable nature. Whenever you want to travel outdoors with your phone charger, you would not need a bag or backpack to toss it in, just slap the Wrist Charge phone charger around your, well, wrist, and you’re good to go. Not only does it ensure that your smartphone gets the necessary amount of juice whenever required, it will also double up as a fashion accessory when not in use.

The Wrist Charge phone charger will hook up any mobile device to a USB port to keep the battery going, and it will work with a myriad of iPhone models in addition to all Android-powered smartphones. Wrist Charge inventor and CEO Jerry Castro, said, “Wrist Charge is the most efficient product that I have designed to date. Wrist Charge provides convenience on the go, prevents lost phone chargers, and eliminates unnecessary clutter. Wrist Charge was created to help make cell phone users lives a little easier.”

If you want to see Wrist Charge being made a reality, a $15 contribution would definitely net you a Wrist Charge that you can call your own should it meet its target goal, where it will then be valued at $29.99. Instant win!

Compose by Ouyang Xi – Your Music Writes Itself

I hate to admit that I took 2 years of guitar lessons and I can only play the first few cords of Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water. I guess I’m one of those people who simply isn’t musically inclined. I used to write some poetry that I would have loved to turn into songs, but I couldn’t read or write music either. So I guess it’s safe to say I’m not destined to be a rock star.

All hope is not lost! Check out Compose by Ouyang Xi, a concept device designed to allow the musically challenged to actually get their melodies on paper. The pen on this digital clipboard acts as a microphone, allowing you to whistle or play a tune into it, and then when docked into the digital tablet, the harmonies will automatically be transcribed into a score. The Compose would also allow you to write directly on the display in order to “record” your tunes, before the thoughts of them are lost forever.

The designer, Ouyang Xi, would also like to see this concept contain libraries that would include sounds for an entire orchestra so that your final masterpiece can play in all it’s splendor, for everyone to enjoy. Of course it’s only a concept for now, but it gives hope to so many of us that have been walking around with the next hit recording buzzing around in our heads.

That’s all I know for now, it certainly is a concept I’d like to see go to production someday, I knew I had rock star potential, I just need a little help. Check out yankodesigns.com for updates or more information.
