CES 2013 through the eyes of our contest winner (video)

Many entered, but it was Daniel Orren who sent in a great green-screened video that snagged him a temporary spot on the Engadget crew at this year’s CES. Hanging with the team in our trusty trailer, getting comped meals, roaming the floor, wearing mind-controlled cat ears — honestly, it’s probably just easier to list all of the things the photographer didn’t do the other week in Vegas.

With the dust settled, we asked Orren how he enjoyed the trip. “The showroom floor was a lot bigger than I had anticipated originally, so naturally this was great as there were more gadgets.” Amongst the highlights: “My favorite times would have to be hanging with the Engadget crew, it’s nice just chatting with everyone about all the cool stuff you’ve seen that day/week and just geeking out.” And as for that inevitable question, the one we ask ourselves right around this time each year, ” I’d love to go back to CES if given the chance, and who knows, maybe I’ll just go on my own in a few years.”

Also included in the prize package was an Engadget Show segment to call his very own. When he wasn’t occupied with the Steambox and 4K TVs, our film crew was following Orren around to find out what it’s like going to CES as a first-timer. Check in after the break for the results.

This segment originally appeared in episode 40 of The Engadget Show.

Doodle 4 Google contest kicks off today, awards $30,000 scholarship

Google has launched its 2013 Doodle 4 Google contest, which invites students K through 12 in the United States to enter for a chance at a $30,000 scholarship. This year’s theme? “My Best Day Ever…” The winning student will have his or her drawing displayed on the Google homepage in addition to the scholarship and grant awards.

The theme, according to Google, was selected as “something that encourages exploration to the past, present or future as well as showing moments or thoughts that range from very small and personal to broad and far reaching – maybe even out of this universe.” Google has a ticker on its Doodle 4 Google page that counts down to the contest deadline, which is presently 67 days from now. Check out the video below for more info.

Google has partnered with the American Museum of Natural History for 2013′s contest. With the partnership, an exhibition will be presented showcasing each state’s winner in New York City from May 22 to July 14th. Those interested in submitting a doodle can download an entry form from the Doodle 4 Google website, and either upload the doodle online or mail it. Mailed entries must be received by March 22.

Doodle 4 Google began in 2008, and has taken place every year since then; likewise, there are various contests globally. In 2012, the search engine giant received 114,000 submissions, with the winner being 7-year-old Dylan Hoffman. In addition to having the artwork displayed on the Google homepage and receiving a $30,000 scholarship, the student’s school will also be given a $50,000 grant.

Engadget Giveaway: win an iMac, courtesy of Parallels!

Engadget Giveaway win an iMac, courtesy of Parallels!

This is the mother lode, folks: we’re starting off the new year by offering a brand-new iMac with 1TB hard drive, 8GB RAM and Magic Trackpad! What’s more, this fully-decked all-in-one also comes preloaded with Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac, so you’ll be able to run Mountain Lion and Windows 8 (as well as Win7, in case you’re not in love with Microsoft’s latest) simultaneously.

This week’s giveaway comes to you thanks to Parallels, which is promoting its Apple-in-the-Workplace campaign. While PCs have traditionally been the computer of choice in a majority of business environments, Macs and iOS devices are starting to crash Microsoft’s party — and a program like Parallels (and Parallels Mobile) makes it much easier to accomplish everything on one computer. If you want more Apple support in your office, head to the Apple-in-the-Workplace Barometer and take a short survey to see how your company’s adoption rate compares with that of others, and you can get info that will help you figure out how to make Mac adoption a reality.

Engadget UK Giveaway: win a Nexus 4 courtesy of MobileFun

Engadget UK Giveaway: win a Nexus 4 courtesy of MobileFun

Who cares whether you’ve been naughty or nice this year? Not UK phone and accessory retailer MobileFun.co.uk, that’s for sure. Because the team there has been kind enough to pass along one shiny new Nexus 4 for us to give away (indiscriminately) to one lucky UK reader. MobileFun sells the latest in mobile tech all year round, but if Santa didn’t give you everything you wanted, there’s a good chance it’s on sale over there, so do go check it out. Not until you’ve entered the competition by leaving a comment of course. Good luck!

The rules:

  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do. Duplicate entries will be filtered out and discarded, so adding additional comments won’t increase your likelihood of winning.
  • This contest is open to all UK residents — aged 18 years or over! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so direct your anger at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winners will be chosen randomly. One winner will receive one (1) new Nexus 4. Service does not come included with the prize.
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of being contacted. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.
  • This unit is purely for promotional giveaway. Mobilefun.co.uk and Engadget / AOL UK are not held liable to honor warranties or customer service.
  • The full list of rules, in all its legalese glory, can be found here.
  • Entries can be submitted until 30th of December, 2012 at 23:59 GMT. Good luck!
