Report: Google to develop automated driving system with Continental and IBM

Both Google and German auto supplier Continental made Nevada their high-tech vehicle testing grounds in 2012, but who’d have thought the companies might end up collaborating? According to German newspaper Daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the tech giant is very close to inking a deal not only with Continental but also with IBM. The paper’s sources didn’t go into specifics, only that the trio will collectively cook up an automated driving system for cars. It’s worth noting that what Continental tested in Nevada was a driver assist technology that makes it easier to navigate traffic. Whether Google is bringing the firm onboard to fine-tune its own self-driving car system or whether the companies will work on something new remains to be seen. However, if the deal does go through, we’ll know at least some of the juicy details in September, as Continental plans to officially debut the collaboration at the Frankfurt Car Show.

Continental Introduces Tires That Warn You Of Vehicle Overloading

Continental Introduces Tires That Warn You Of Vehicle Overloading

Continental has been stepping up its line of products as it already delivers tires which are equipped with a sensor that tells the user just how much air pressure is currently in the tire. It looks like they’re taking their tire tech one step further with a new sensor that can calculate and report the current load weight of your vehicle to help drivers keep from accidentally exceeding the suggested capacity.

The way the tires work is by recognizing how much weight is on them from how much of its surface area is touching the ground, which is known as the contact patch. The sensors detect the size of the contact patch and determines whether or not your vehicle has been overloaded. This sensor can certainly be helpful for SUV owners as their vehicles are often overloaded due to their size, and are top-heavy, which means the combination of an overloaded vehicle and a sharp turn can turn tragic very quickly. Intelligent Tires Will Automatically Weigh Your Vehicle So You Never Overpack Again

Continental already sells tires packed with monitors that keep tabs on air pressure, automatically letting you know when it gets too low. But the company is planning to expand that technology with improved tire sensors that will actually be able to calculate and report the current load weight of your vehicle so you don’t exceed its suggested capacity. Post Crash Braking Technology slows your car after a crash

Post Crash Braking TechnologyCar accidents aren’t pleasant, and car manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to eliminate them or minimize the danger they cause. Well, the folks over at Continental, the German tire,  braking and stability control developer, has come up with something  called Post Crash Braking Technology (PCBT) – a technology which slows the car automatically after impact. The reason for this? A lot of times, drivers don’t manage to hit the brakes after a crash due to disorientation or unconsciousness, and this causes the car to continue moving into another obstacle or vehicle before it finally stops.
