Piv-O Convertible Stroller Can Provide Years Of Transportation For Your Child

As a soon-to-be father, I can tell you that one of the most challenging new purchases my wife and I have to make is buying a stroller as we want our baby to be as comfortable as possible while we take her out for a stroll. Buying a new stroller each time your child grows out of the old one can be extremely expensive, which is why the Piv-O Stroller is something that I’d be extremely interested in. (more…)

HP Split x2 Windows 8 hybrid now available on Best Buy for $750

DNP HP Split x2 now available

Perhaps the “x2” in Split x2’s name indicates that HP worked double-time to bring the device to market before its August release date. A follow up to the Envy x2, the device is a 13-inch Windows 8 hybrid with a 1,366 x 768 detachable screen that houses a 128GB SSD. The other specs are identical to the one we previewed, but you can only get the Intel Core i3 version right now — no word on when the i5 flavor will follow. You can check out the entry-level Slate x2 at Best Buy (currently the only place you can buy one) where it’s available for $750. For those who prefer Android-powered hybrids, however, you will just have to wait until that Slatebook x2 hits the market.

    [Thanks, Kyle]

    Samsung announces ATIV Q: a Windows / Android hybrid with a 3,200 x 1,800 display

At its Premiere event in London today, Samsung unveiled the ATIV Q, a hybrid that can run both Android and Windows 8. On-stage, Executive Vice President DJ Lee said the “versatile and adaptable” device can switch between four positions: tablet, typing, stand and writing. The Q sports a 13.3-inch display with a 3,200 x 1,800 (qHD+) resolution (that works out to 275 ppi). Samsung says the panel is optimized for use in bright sunlight, and viewing angles are wide, at 178 degrees. There’s also an S Pen on board to take advantage of that spacious screen, which Galaxy Note fans will certainly appreciate.

Apart from the high-res display, the standout feature is the device’s dual-OS support. To switch between Android Jelly Bean and Windows, you simply have to press the Start button (no reboot required), and you can pin Android apps to the Windows screen and vice versa. Under the hood is a Core i5 Haswell processor which Samsung rates for up to nine hours of battery life. All this comes in a magnesium body that’s plenty portable: it weighs just 1.29kg (2.84 pounds) and measures just 13.9mm (0.5 inch). No pricing info was announced at the event in London, but we know the ATIV Q will launch in the UK later this year. For now, check out our hands-on.

Panasonic’s AX3 is a foldable Windows 8 Ultrabook that can also take some abuse

    Panasonic's AX3 is a foldable Windows 8 Ultrabook that's also rugged

Plan on doing some yoga while in a hostile country? Panasonic’s got you covered with its 11.6-inch AX3 Ultrabook. The device’s 1080p screen folds over, similar to the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, along with Dell’s officially unofficial XPS 11. Under the hood, it runs an Intel 1.8GHz Haswell chip, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, all in a package that weighs in at just 1.14kg (2.5 pounds) and promises to deliver 13 hours of battery life. In the grand tradition of Panasonic’s ToughBook devices, the AX3 can survive a 2.5-foot drop if it slips off your desk, and it can also withstand 100 kilos of weight should you feel the urge to stand on top of your computer. There’s no pricing or availability information to share at the moment, though we hope to get a hands-on at IFA later this summer.

Intel targets Bay Trail ‘2 in 1’ tablet / laptops for the holidays starting at $399

Intel is in the middle of its Computex 2013 presentation, and it’s already putting a target price for some of those tablet / laptops we’re expecting around the holidays: $399. While more premium experiences will be powered by Intel’s fourth generation Core “Haswell” CPU, the quad-core Atom “Bay Trail” are going in cheaper ultrathin and light notebooks with touchscreens with 2 in 1 editions swinging the keyboard out of the way for use as tablets. That puts them slightly above the $200 floor predicted by Intel execs for basic touchscreen laptops, we’ll see if any of the numerous OEMs on stage can bring out convertible devices worth the extra cash this holiday season.

Aston Martin CC100 Speedster Concept: Holy Blow Dry, Batman!

There’s no doubt about it, but retro-modernism is here to stay. Check out this amazing concept created by Aston Martin to celebrate their 100th anniversary! I can already imagine toupées and hair flying all over the place, as the Speedster zips down the road. One the plus side, once you get one, you will no longer need a blow dryer.

aston martin cc 100 speedster concept

The CC100 Speedster was unveiled this past weekend at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring race in Germany. It packs a front-mounted 6.0-liter V12 engine. The rear wheel drive is coupled with an automated manual gearbox. To help keep weight down, the whole upper body is carbon fiber. All of this will make the Speedster go 0 to 60 MPH in 4 seconds, with a top speed of 180 MPH. Of course, at that speed, you’ll need to wear a helmet or some Steampunk-style goggles to keep the bugs from leaving dents in your face.

There’s still no word yet whether the Speedster will be available for sale, but I’m sure that if it ever is, it will be well out of my price range!

    Switched On: Hinging on success

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

DNP Switched On Hinging on success

The announcement of the Acer Aspire R7 was the best example of the company’s assertion that it was moving from computers designed with touch to computers designed for touch. But if having a fancy, even unprecedented, hinge is what defines a touch-optimized notebook, Acer is a bit late to the party.

Last October, Switched On discussed the role that laptop-tablet hybrids — namely convertibles and detachables — would play in the differentiation of Windows 8 devices. Both types have seen their share of support. Detachables have included HP’s Envy x2, ASUS’ Transformer-inspired VivoTab and Microsoft’s Surface. (Dell’s XPS 10 is available only with Windows RT.)

Porsche shows 918 Spyder in production form

Porsche shows 918 Spyder hybrid in final production form

Porsche isn’t about to let the LaFerrari steal the hybrid spotlight: it just unveiled the finished design of the 918 Spyder, which is expected to ship as a 2015 model. The look won’t shock anyone keeping up with their spy videos, although Porsche’s formal unveiling helps firm up the specifications that customers will get if they’ve dutifully shelled out $845,000. The performance is even more intimidating than it was in 2011, we know that much: there’s 887HP of combined V8 and plug-in electric power, a 0-62MPH time of 2.8 seconds and up to 18 miles of gas-free driving. About the only disappointment (price notwithstanding) is the lack of options beyond a weight reduction package. We doubt many Spyder buyers will complain when they can even outrace a 911 GT3.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S available online, reaches Best Buy on June 23rd

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S available online, reaches Best Buy on June 23rd

Lenovo teased a potential sweet spot in its convertible laptop line when it revealed the IdeaPad Yoga 11S, blending the portability of the Yoga 11 with the raw performance of the Yoga 13. As of now, we can do more than just imagine how well that balance works: the Yoga 11S is at last available to order. Those who plunk down at least $800 can buy the bendy Windows 8 PC online from either Best Buy or Lenovo, although shoppers will want to think carefully before jumping in with both feet. While both outlets equip their Yogas with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive at that price, Best Buy lists a 1.5GHz Core i5 where Lenovo starts with a more modest 1.4GHz Core i3. No matter which outlet beckons, would-be owners will have to bide their time. Lenovo is quoting a four-week wait for new shipments, and Best Buy will only see the Yoga 11S grace its retail stores on June 23rd.

Toshiba’s Portege Z10t detachable Ultrabook debuts at IDF (hands-on)

Toshiba's upcoming detachable Ultrabook debuts at IDF 2013 Beijing handson

Right after Intel’s somewhat mundane announcement of the Ultrabook Convertible and Ultrabook Detachable sub-brands at IDF in Beijing, SVP Kirk Skaugen surprised us by whipping out an unnamed laptop coming from Toshiba, so we jumped onto the stage to get a sniff of the only two units at the venue. Judging by the looks of it, we’re confident that this is actually the Portege Z10t that hit the FCC last month — the vents, camera and logo on the back match those in the drawing (embedded after the break) filed in the application.
