Arcade Button Watch – Nerd it up

Arcade Button Watch
Many of us grew up playing all different types of games. Some were on consoles, others were on computers, and then there were those of us who went to an arcade to blow every quarter we could lay our hands on. Aside from the giant cabinet, the most iconic aspects of this method of killing time in the best way ever is the joystick, and those giant, mash-able buttons. It almost makes you wonder how many of those were broken over the years.

Now we’re all adults with jobs and responsibilities that require a lot of our time. Of course, just because you’re older doesn’t mean you have to be boring. The Arcade Button Watch has nostalgia written all over it, and it’s functional to boot! These resemble the buttons that led us to victory and defeat alike, and come in a variety of colors.

There is a black, blue, green, grey, and red to choose from, and they all cost around $60. To see the time, all you need do is press the button (made of high gloss space-age polymers as the site proudly touts) and red LEDs will display the time. It looks as though the time display is a bit awkward, but still readable. The face of the watch is 45mm in diameter, and the strap is made of silicon. When it’s not in use, it’ll look like you’re wearing some sort of doomsday device or a panic button.

Nissan Nismo smartwatch not quite ready for prime time yet

nissan-nismo-watchNissan might be the last name on your mind to have it announce that it is behind the latest smartwatch concept, considering how the company happens to be an auto manufacturer and not a consumer electronics player in a long shot. Well, this just goes to show how diversified some companies’ interests can be, and Nissan has just announced their conceptual Nissan Nismo smartwatch that will not hook up to your smartphone so that you have a “duplicate” of what kind of incoming notifications and calls you have, but rather, it would help connect the driver to the car, and vice versa.

For starters, the Nissan Nismo smartwatch’s main strength is to showcase Nissan’s intent to deliver biometric data that will help enhance driver performance and efficiency. Needless to say, their foray into this particular market segment would automatically make Nissan the first car manufacturer to develop a smartwatch that was specifically designed for drivers of Nissan Nismo cars. Provide drivers with real-time biometric data, it will also enable the driver to monitor the efficiency of their vehicle with average speed and fuel consumption readings; access vehicle telematics and performance data while on track; capture biometric data via a heart rate monitor; connect to the car using a smartphone app via Bluetooth Low Energy; and receive tailored car messages from Nissan.

Who knows what the future might bring? There are another three more key technologies that have been identified for future development, and they are ECG (Electrocardiogram) to help measure the intervals of the R-R rhythm of the heart and identify early fatigue; EEG (Electroencephalogram) Brainwave that is capable of monitoring the drivers’ levels of concentration and emotions while assisting athletes to get ‘In The Zone’; and Skin Temperature, where it will keep track of your core body temperature and hydration levels. Powered by a lithium battery, the Nissan Nismo Watch will be juiced up via microUSB and offers a battery life of more than a week under normal usage conditions.

Qualcomm introduces Toq smartwatch to join the growing trend of wearable tech

toqI guess one of the main highlights of this year’s IFA 2013 would be the fact that smartwatches are set to make a splash in the consumer electronics industry pretty soon, although whether they would make it big or not is another thing to consider. After all, there are no guarantees that the smartwatch would end up creating an explosive niche market, but neither are there ominous signs that the smartwatch industry is headed for a failed direction. In fact, Samsung’s Galaxy Gear was announced to great aplomb, while we also have Qualcomm announcing their Toq smartwatch. I know right, who would have thought that Qualcomm would have rolled out a smartwatch instead of the next hot mobile processor.

The Toq smartwatch is tipped for a Q4 release sometime later this year, where it is meant to function as a second display to your smartphone. Sporting proprietary Mirasol display technology, you can be sure that the Toq smartwatch is a sight to behold, thanks to a revolutionary reflective, low-power display which allows an always on viewing experience. Not only that, the Toq smartwatch is a snap to juice up whenever its batteries start to run low, thanks to wireless charging capability by Qualcomm WiPower LE technology as well as a true stereo Bluetooth audio experience.

Toq has been described to be “always on, always connected, always visible wearable technology” that offers users a ‘Digital 6th Sense’, informing you of what you need to know and when you need to know it with a single glance of your wrist. It will definitely do its bit in letting the Mirasol display’s capability shine, not to mention showcasing WiPower LE and stereo Bluetooth technologies. It is said that the color capacitive touchscreen display will be able to last for days before the battery runs out of juice, and juicing it up is a snap as well, where the Qualcomm WiPower LE technology opens up the door for a true “drop and go” charging experience.

The Toq smartwatch will play nice with Android 4.0.3 and above mobile devices when it rolls out. Would you settle for this or the Galaxy Gear from Samsung?

The Ring Watch – if only time pieces were as infinite as the thing they measure

Ring Watch
There are a myriad of interesting watches out there. Some come in the form of a pocket watch (my personal favorite), wrist watch, necklace, and much more. There are plain ones, those that are hard to read, and just when you think you’ve seen them all, a new idea blows you away. In this case, time is being told through the form of a ring.

The Ring Watch is not big or flashy, but it is an ingenious idea. Many people don’t wear a watch, usually because they are too bulky (also because everyone just uses their phones to see the time of day anymore). This is currently a crowdfunding project, but it’s looking rather promising. The ring will be made of a surgical steel which will be nice for people who have metal allergies.

It utilizes an ultra-thin rechargeable lithium polymer battery which should last about 3 years with 15 times of 1-minute activation per day. The maximum amount of charging time needed on the wireless Qi charger pad is 2 hours, and this is also where you set the time. You can choose either blue or orange LEDs for your ring, and it is said to be water-resistant. Sadly, the battery in this ring is non-replaceable, which means it won’t be functional past being a fancy-looking ring after that time. That being said, dropping anywhere from $195-250 on this seems a bit much. However, if this is something you’re really pining over, contributing to this first round may mean a discount for whenever they start refining it in the coming years. There always seems to be a bit of a risk with these projects, and you never know when it’s going to be worth it or not.

Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch set to rock and roll

galaxy-gearAre you thinking about getting a new timepiece to adorn your wrist? If you have answered in the affirmative, then you would surely want to check out the Samsung Galaxy Gear which was just announced at IFA 2013 earlier yesterday. In fact, the smartwatch might be the new trend when it comes to portable devices – remember how the tablet exploded overnight with the introduction of the Apple iPad, creating a new niche market? Perhaps the smartwatch might be the next “tablet”, so to speak, and here we are with more details about the Samsung Galaxy Gear that is set to arrive in store shelves from September 25th onwards.

If you already own a Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet, then you would definitely want to check your bank balance as to whether there is enough left behind to pick up the Samsung Galaxy Gear when it arrives (which has touted a 199 Euro price tag so far). The Samsung Galaxy Gear will let you remain connected to your existing Samsung Galaxy devices, where it notifies you of incoming messages, including calls, texts, emails and alerts, while serving up a preview of those messages in addition to creating the opportunity for users to accept or discreetly ignore those messages.

Should you need to pay more attention than just give a quick glance, all you need to do is pick up your Samsung Galaxy device, and the Smart Relay feature will instantly reveal the full content on the screen. Talk about being efficient, no? Not only that, there is an integrated speaker which enables you to conduct hands-free calls straight from the Gear itself, all the while maintaining connections to your mobile communications without having to disrupt your daily routines. I would say that this signals the beginning of self-proclaimed Dick Tracys around, where you can also use your voice to draft messages, create new calendar entries, set alarms, and check the weather – all right on the Galaxy Gear itself via S Voice.

Limited Edition Kisai Zone Wood Watch is organically modern

redsandalwood_zone_lcd_watch

Our society is of the ‘buy, toss, upgrade’ mentality. There was a time when every possession was valued and cared for so it would last generations. Now if anything doesn’t break from five years of use, we’re decently impressed. The only items that we do treat with any esteem are those that are rather costly, such as jewelry and watches. Of course, you don’t go out buying these things everyday, so the items you choose should be something you like and will want to keep in mint condition, as they’re likely not going to end up in the rubbish bin.

TokyoFlash makes some really astounding watches that are more artistic pieces than just another way to check the time. They always require a little work to read, but that only makes them more interesting. If you’re looking for a fancy new time piece that is worth keeping in good condition, the Limited Edition Kisai Zone is definitely a valid option. There are three different types of wood for the case and strap that have their own color for the LCD screen.

There is a maple with a blue LCD, red sandalwood with purple, and a dark sandalwood with black. The time is shown in hexagons, showing the hour on the top, the minutes in the middle, and the seconds at the bottom. Even fractions of a second are displayed thanks to an animated hexagon in the bottom right of the face of the watch. This currently costs $99, but as that is the launch price, you can expect that those numbers will go up in the coming days. The wood is coated with a clear protective seal, the LCD display is backlit for nighttime, and it runs on a normal, replaceable watch battery that you’ll only need to change out once a year. It is always on, and has adjustable settings for the animations.
