Base Two Binary Clock

Everyone needs a clock of sorts to tell the time, but with the modern day smartphone and tablet being a staple device for most folks we have ended up relying on them to help us tell the time. The watch has become a fashion accessory (and an investment for those who fork out thousands for it) instead of being a staple contraption that you wear around your wrist, but there’s one thing for sure – clocks are still here to stay, especially when you are at home. If you happen to have a rather geeky persuasion, why not go all out and pick up as nerdy a clock as possible – with the $69.95 Base Two Binary Clock being a prime candidate?

This is one idiosyncractic clock that relies on binary notation to display the time, where it will mimic the same on-and-off calculation as electronic systems from the beginning of the computer age. There will be half a dozen columns of blue LED lights, wherein every two columns will represent the digits for hour, minute, and second. From bottom to top in each column, there will be individual lights that represent the values 1, 2, 4, and 8. All you need to do is add the values of lit units and voila, you are able to decode the digit represented by each column. Depending on your choice, you can set the Base Two Binary Clock to a 12- or 24-hour convention, with three brightness settings to choose from.

Powered by AC, there is the option to stash in a trio of AA batteries to keep it going as well, nifty when the apocalypse happens and there is no power from the grid.

Giant Display Alarm Clock

There are alarm clocks, and then there are alarm clocks. For starters, the $89.95 Giant Display Alarm Clock that you see on the right will be able to show off the time in large 4” digits which can be viewed easily from right across the room. Of course, if you own a castle, then “room” would be the wrong word to describe where you place the Giant Display Alarm Clock, as it would be too cavernous for its 4” tall digits to be readable. Ah well, since most of us do not own a castle, then the Giant Display Alarm Clock would be ideal for folks who are sick and tired of interpreting analog clocks and small digit digital clocks.

The red LED numbers have also been specially set against a high-visibility black background, making it easily readable in daylight, as well as in darkness. Both the time as well as its alarm can be set via the buttons on the clock, or if you want, you can make use of the included wireless remote control. You can check out the time in either 12- or 24-hour formats, and it has a favorite feature of most folks who do not get enough sleep – a remote-operated snooze function. The remote is powered by two AA batteries, so make sure you have enough spare AA batteries in your home to ensure you will never fail to tell the time correctly.

Future LEGO Clock?

If you are a frequent visitor to CG odds are that you have tinkered with something in your life. Maybe you tried to make your mom’s frying pan into a flying saucer. Or maybe you created a robot that would take your clothes to the hamper. Not all of the tinkering succeeds. But our minds keep trying!

Meet Hans Andersson, a Swedish gentlemen who bought his daughters a LEGO® Mindstorm kit a few years back. They did not take to the kit, but Hans did, and created some new robots. A few years later – after creating a Rubik’s Cube solver and Sudoku solver – he tried a LEGO clock. He has now revised the Time Twister and posted a look at Time Twister 2. It is sort of a LCD looking clock made entirely of LEGO. Watch the video below to see it in action, but envision digit segments connected in a chain. The start of the chain must keep spinning – in either direction – until the last segment is in place. Why? Only one motor is required per digit. Digits are created using LEGO Mindstorms NXT Intelligent Bricks. Time Twister 2 looks much more stylish that the original. So perhaps Hans will gain some attention with this go around. Maybe we will be able to buy one of his creations someday. But if nothing else, let’s applaud Mr. Andersson on his mastery of something we all appreciate – tinkering.

Bi-Directional Interval Watch Winder

Women have their shoes and handbags, but what do we guys have? Well, for starters, there is the $199.95 Bi-Directional Interval Watch Winder that does what it says it does – and it does it well, of course. This particular watch winder will allow you to change its direction as well as rest interval so that a self-winding wristwatch will be able to keep accurate time, never mind that it is not worn regularly. I can identify with that, especially with an automatic wristwatch in my collection.

The Bi-Directional Interval Watch Winder is a Swiss-designed device that sports a silent motor which can be set to rotate a watch clockwise or counterclockwise. There will be a quartet of settings that allows it to alternate different periods of rest with three minutes of motion, which translates to approximately 2,200 and 4,000 turns per day. This means the watch rotors regularly power the mainsprings without having to suffer from overwinding issues. Within the central compartment, your precious watch will rest on a padded cushion, where it remains nestled against a smooth simulated leather lining.

Radiation Detecting Watch

You might be living in a peaceful country, but bear in mind that there is always the threat of nuclear warfare breaking out at any time no thanks to some renegade failed states, insane regimes as well as established nuclear powers who are too jittery. For those who are paranoid androids, being totally afraid of a radiation fallout wherever you go, then the $1,500 Radiation Detecting Watch does sound like the perfect timekeeping device to own in these troubled times.

I suppose it would have sold particularly well for folks who wanted to visit Japan after the tsunami hit the Land of the Rising Sun in the first quarter of 2011, crippling a nuclear power plant in the process. Although the Japanese government did deem their country to be safe to visit, there were instances of sushi bars making available a geiger meter for customers to give them peace of mind, that they are not eating irradiated seafood. Well, 2011 might be a distant memory for you now, but at least you can use the Radiation Detecting Watch to pick up residues of unusually high radiation wherever you go – and perhaps detect some mutants along the way. The watch itself boasts of a durable ultra-lightweight Titanium case, an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and is water resistant to 330′.

Boombox Metal Wristwatch

Now here is a “boomtastic” timepiece to wear around your wrist, where it merges the old school with the new. The $89.99 Boombox Metal Wristwatch comes with an LCD digital time display, allowing you to read the time at but a glance. Sure, it is not going to consume a whole lot of D batteries unlike boomboxes of old, and it will be unable to play back your favorite MP3s (although we do wish that there was an edition that could, but then again, it would mean a pretty big wristwatch to accommodate the larger battery), but at the very least it conveys a sense of style to those who come across your path.

Features of the Boombox Metal Wristwatch include a locking clasp, side push buttons, and a display that will shut itself off automatically after just three seconds in order to conserve battery life in the long run. I do not think that this is suitable for action at a corporate boardroom meeting, but it might be the ideal Christmas gift for your teen who is into all things retro. Surely he will be the envy of his friends, don’t you think so?

Executive Motherboard Desk Clock

What do you do when you have some old circuitry lying around that you do not want to throw away, and yet figured out that there should be a new lease of life for it? Well, I guess those with a more creative slant can always come up with something different, using their hands to fashion a cool new product from what was previously unwanted. The folks over at Thinkgeek must have stumbled upon someone (or an organization, who knows?) who is capable of such, resulting in the $49.99 Executive Motherboard Desk Clock.

I guess you can call this the “mother of all clocks”, where it is made out from real-life recycled circuit boards. Definitely the thing to have if you want your desk to be a whole lot cooler compared to everybody else’s. Heck, you don’t even need to be of the executive level if you are going to purchase this and count down the hours before it is time to go home and relax. You know what? There actually should be a new timepiece for office drones which, when the clock strikes 5 (or whatever time it is to be off), it will shout, “Beer O’Clock!”. The Executive Motherboard Desk Clock is powered by a single LR44 watch battery which thankfully, is included right out of the box to get you started.

Tetris Animated Alarm Clock

What helps you get out from bed in the mornings? Does it have anything to do with that pet dog of you who slobbers all over your face, signalling that it is time to roll out of bed and be ready to meet a brand new day? For video game fans who have a strong love for Tetris, then you can wake up feeling like a kid all over again to the $29.99 Tetris Animated Alarm Clock.

The alarm sound will not be that of an incessant cockerel exercising its throat, and neither will it be the irritating ring of the classic bell alarm clock, but rather, it will play back the classic Tetris theme song. Individual minutes are formed from water falling Tetriminos, and you can literally spend watching your minutes ticking by. Sporting 12/24 hour clock options, it will be updated with modern functions like snooze and a backlit display, carrying a trio of AA batteries with Tetriminos-shaped buttons up front.

Always Accurate Adventurometer

There is just something about telling the time, and some of us have moved on from collecting comics as a hobby to amassing a growing collection of watches instead. Well, instead of gunning for the usual high end models from Rolex, Tag Heuer, Patek and the likes, how about settling for something more unique like the $449.95 Always Accurate Adventurometer? This men’s watch will be able to ensure you know what the exact time is at all times, where it receives updates from the world’s radio clock transmitters while ensuring you know just what kind of weather conditions are coming your way whenever you venture outdoors.

With the Always Accurate Adventurometer, you will be able to rely on a constant flow of reliable data while you hike, ski, cycle, or sail, thanks to its digital display that works well with an analog dial. Other hardware wizardry in this timepiece includes a separate compass, an altimeter, a barometer, and thermometer functions, and the digital display will show off chronograph (1/100th second accuracy), world time, 24-hour time, and an 87-year calendar among others. It receives radio signals half a dozen times per day from atomic clocks located in the U.S., U.K., Germany, Japan, and China, and is smart enough to adjust itself for daylight saving and when traveling between time zones. You need not fret about battery life either, as a rechargeable battery inside can stash away energy collected by a solar cell in the watch’s face, where a full charge lets it work for up to five months.
