Nintendo 2DS Announced: It’s Just Like the 3DS, Except It’s More Confusing

Nintendo’s announcement of the Nintendo 2DS is one of the most surprising developments in the gaming world this year. As an entry-level variant of the Nintendo 3DS, the 2DS can play all 3DS games and thousands more DS games. But unlike the 3DS and the 3DS XL, the 2DS can’t be folded. It’s upper screen also can’t display stereoscopic 3D, hence the lose-lose situation regarding its name. It’s an honest name, but for some people it will be like being told that a Honda Bivic exists. And it’s a Civic.

According to Kotaku, the 2DS’ screens are the same size as the ones on the 3DS. The lower screen is still a touchscreen and the 2DS will also come with a stylus. But as you can see its Circle Pad and face buttons are on the upper half of the device. I think the buttons were shifted up so that the shoulder buttons – which are at the top of the device – will still be within your index finger’s reach while your thumbs are on the Circle Pad and face buttons.

Aside from the “slate” form and the lack of a stereoscopic 3D display, the 2DS has a few other deficiencies compared to its big brothers. For one, it only has a mono speaker, but you can still get stereo audio via its headphone jack. It also has no physical Wi-Fi switch; you’ll have to toggle that from within the menu. So it’s a lesser device, but that means it also has a lower price. It will only cost $130 (USD), $40 cheaper than the 3DS and $70 cheaper than the 3DS XL.

*Update: Kotaku also shared Nintendo Europe’s nifty comparison chart (pdf) between all three 3DS models.* The Nintendo 2DS will be available on 10/12/2013, which is also the day Pokémon X and Y are released. That timing should help push units right from the get go; it will be enough for many people to see that the 2DS can play the latest Pokémon game. But only time will tell if Nintendo’s questionable naming scheme and hilarious yet also depressing decision to ditch their system’s main feature will pay off.

nintendo 2ds 3

Will customers think that there are 2DS games? Or that the 2DS can’t play 3DS games? Will developers still care about the quality and functionality of stereoscopic 3D in their 3DS games? Will Nintendo finally realize that they have to come up with a practical naming scheme for their devices? Seriously, why didn’t they just name it the 3DS Jr.?

Tank Vader: The Ultimate Power in the Universe

Darth Vader. He’s one of the best parts of the original Star Wars saga. What if you could turn him into a badass Sith tank and let him loose on your enemy?
Vader tank
That would be amazing. Tank Vader would just decimate whole armies and lay waste to everything in it’s path. The Vader tank is the work of Gabriel Dishaw. It is a miniature tank with the head of the Lord of the Sith riding atop it, much like Danny Trejo’s head on that turtle in Breaking Bad.

Vader tank1
It is made from all kinds of recycled parts: a toy tank, computers, typewriters, adding machines, airplane parts and vintage model pieces.

You can buy Tank Vader from Gabriel’s site for $1000(USD). Sadly my pockets are empty or else I would consider it. It just looks amazing!

USB-powered BB Sniper Rifle: USBB Gun

If you need a new weapon for your desk and fancy yourself a sniper, this USB powered BB gun should do the trick. Shoot your co-workers and make a nuisance of yourself all day long.

bb usb 1
This USB-powered gun is made to fire BBs, but that’s not all. It also has an onboard camera above the barrel so you can use your computer screen as viewfinder. The barrel can be rotated 120 degrees horizontally, and has a 35 degree vertical range of motion. How cool is that? This sniper rifle will fire BBs at a 30m/s velocity and has about an 8m range. I’m not sure how hard that is, but it probably doesn’t feel too good to get hit with one.

Pew pew pew all day long. It is a great way to kill some time at work while pretending you are a sniper. It sells for ¥9,999 (~$101 USD) over at Shanghai Donya – which is an odd name for a store located in Japan.

Emulator Cabinet Works with 75 Controllers, 30+ Consoles and 2 Happy Players

These days you can run dozens of classic games on a PC using emulators. If you’re good with modding hardware, you may be able to connect the right controller for the console you’re emulating. But if you’re Patrice Daubaire, you take it one step further. Patrice hacked 75 controllers to make them compatible with over 110 gaming systems.

Patrice calls his ingenious mod the Multi Video Game System 2 or MVGS 2. He managed to universalize 75 controllers – from an Atari 2600 joystick to aPlayStation controller – so that they’ll work with different gaming systems via a custom VGA adapter. Patrice claims his system has zero input lag and that the controllers weigh more or less the same as unmodified ones. Patrice was also able to add additional functions like a quick save button on some of the controllers.

To present his invention, Patrice built the MVGS 2 Dream Station, a PC with over 30 gaming system emulators. It has a nice cabinet with a built-in monitor and lets up to two players geek out. He also setup a rotating display stand for the controllers.

Pick your jaw up from the floor and head to the MVGS 2 website for more information.

My Little Sharkpony: Biting is Magic

It started out as a joke, but Shark Pony and the Glitter Riders sounds like a pretty amusing concept for a comic if you ask me. And while the comic itself looks hilarious, this plush creation by RoboShark that goes with it is what really caught my eye.

sharkpony

The comic follows “4 Dude Bros who steal a spaceship and are transformed into 3 Magical Girls and a Sharkpony.” That’s more than enough for me to want more.

If you want to see what happens to Sharkpony and his posse, you’ll need to pledge at least $5 on Indiegogo for the first issue of the comic, and you’ll have to pony up 300 smackeroos if you want one of the three limited-edition plushes.

Computer Virus Dolls Will Infect Your Couch

These are the most malicious plushies you’ll ever see. They’re the Computer Virus Dolls and they might rub you off the wrong way, especially if you’re into IT and have to deal with problems that are caused by them on a daily basis.

Each and every one of the plushies in the series are inspired by a bevy of the most common malicious software that infects computers worldwide on a daily basis.

The Drew Oliver Company is behind the unusual series, which includes Virus, Worm, Trojan, and Malware-inspired plushies, going by the name of the malicious program that it was created after.

Each of the plushies come with a pop-up window tag and a ribbon that spells out the name of the doll in binary. Expect more unusual plushies from the group, as stuffed bugs, bots, and zombies are said to be coming soon.

Custom Steampunk Link Action Figure (Hy)rules

This awesome custom Link action figure has it all. Look out Ganon. You are about to have a very bad day. This amazing custom figure was made by KodyKoala, who wanted to explore what the Zelda games would be like if they were set in a steampunk universe.
link figure
After seeing this, I believe that he should be the one to populate that universe. He wanted to make a futuristic Link, but still keep some of the classic things that we all love. He also wanted to have a fun way for Link to carry all of his inventory. It looks like Link has about fifty some items he is carrying here.
link figure1
It took a lot of parts, so it ended up being a more expensive than he wanted. But that is why it looks so good. This figures stands about 6 inches tall. You can buy it for $300(USD) in his Etsy shop.

007 Concealed Blade Briefcase Doesn’t Give You a License to Kill

When you are a secret spy working for British intelligence, your people come up with all kinds of cool gadgets for you to kill or maim. And if you need to protect some documents, and 007′s concealed blade briefcase is the perfect thing.

blade suitcase
Bond’s briefcase (shown above) hid a razor sharp blade for protecting the goods (and himself). Now you can own a perfect replica of the stylish and elegant briefcase used by Sean Connery in the classic 007 movie “From Russia with Love.”

james bond briefcase 2

Keep in mind that the replica case doesn’t actually come with the pop-out knife, though its makers at Swaine Adeney Brigg state:

The case has no pockets in the lid, so is an open box inside. We will supply you with an exact replica of James Bond’s case that we made for the Bond movie; any modifications you choose to make are down to your own imagination.

Most of our customers ask for a pocket here, a strap there. But we can, of course, accommodate more unusual requests from agents in the field. Often, just a small twist on a classic design can turn your attaché case into a real talking point.

(Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.)

It’s the perfect place for all of your valuables. Unfortunately, this perfect replica will cost you £1675.00 (~$2,600 USD) making this one expensive briefcase. Spy stuff doesn’t come cheap.

DIY Magnetic Crocheted Katamari is Very Attractive

Flickr user/Sprite Stitcher/Princess of All Cosmos Mara Cheng made a crocheted katamari that works a bit like its videogame counterpart, and she did it the Jesse Pinkman way: with magnets. Yeah, Science!

magnetic crocheted katamari by mara cheng

Actually Mara made it the Amy Shimel way. Amy designed the pattern back in 2007, way before Jesse and Walt needed magnets. Amy’s design calls for 28 0.75″ round magnets stuffed inside the ball along with Poly-Fil. Amy says you have to crochet the main body as tight as you can so that the Katamari won’t be deformed by the weight of the magnets. Roll to Amy’s website for the instructions.
