80s Pop Culture LEGO Vehicles: Ridin’ Retro

There were a lot of cool cars in 1980s TV shows and movies. We must have been obsessed with cars in that era, because you don’t get these sort of iconic rides anymore. Ralph from Brothers Brick has created some awesome homages to TV and movie vehicles of that era and they look amazing.

lego a team

They look so good, I wish we could buy each as a set and put them together ourselves. These cars even have LEGO characters to go with them. All of our favorites are here: the GMC Vandura from The A-Team, Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters, KITT from Knight Rider, and The General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard.

Belkin LEGO iPhone 5 Case: Time to Brick Your iPhone

We’ve seen a couple of iPhone and iPod cases that are compatible with LEGO, but this is the first officially-licensed case that I’ve seen. Belkin managed to get the toy maker’s approval and have now released a limited edition of LEGO cases for the iPhone 5.

Now that’s a brick phone.

Head to Belkin’s website to order the LEGO iPhone 5 case.

LightUp Electronics Construction Kit: LEGOtronics

Stanford University alumni Josh Chan and Tarun Pondicherry invented LightUp, a modular electronics kit that’s as easy to use as LEGO blocks. The kits is designed to teach children the basics of electronics and computer programming.

lightup electronics construction kit

LightUp simplifies the process of building an electronic circuit so that it won’t discourage children from experimenting and trying again if they don’t get the result they want. Instead of requiring children to use soldering materials or wires, the parts in a LightUp kit connect to each other using magnets. This means that they’re easy to put together and take apart. It also means that if you purchase more kits, you get more parts to mix and match.

lightup electronics construction kit 2

One thing that LightUp kits have that LEGO toys don’t have is an augmented reality app. When you take a picture of a LightUp circuit on a mobile device, the app can point out if any of the parts are incorrectly connected. It can also show the flow of electricity throughout the circuit, as shown in the image above. Finally, LightUp can be programmed using Arduino code, so kids can jump right into coding if they want. I’m not sure if the kit will come with programming aids or lessons though.

Pledge at least $39 (USD) on Kickstarter to receive a LightUp kit as a reward. The reward tiers seem to have different kinds of kits assigned to them; I’m not sure if the more expensive kits will include all the items included in the cheaper ones, so choose your desired tier carefully.

LEGO Releasing Ewok Village Set: LEG-ENDOR-Y

Ewoks. They aren’t quite Jar Jar but…Well, love them or hate them, they know how to deal with Imperials on their forest moon. LEGO is releasing The Ewok Village, a beautifully detailed 1,990 brick model complete with traps, hideouts, and even an elevating throne (for 3PO of course.). The set even comes with 16 minifigs so you can relive all your favorite Endor scenes.

It’s pretty awesome. The set comes with five Ewoks, C-3PO, Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, two Rebels, two Scout Troopers, and two Storm Troopers. The Ewoks are Wicket, Teebo, Chief Chirpa, Logray and a fifth un-named Ewok.

There are also weapons included like a lightsaber, three blasters, two rifles, two spears, a bow and crossbow, and two staffs, so the Ewoks can poke things. This is one awesome set if you love Endor. It will retail for $249.99(USD) and coming this September at LEGO Stores and online at the LEGO Shop.

Electrified Wolverine Claws will Cut & Cook You

A few years ago, hacksmith/Weapon H/H-man James Hobson made a great pair of Wolverine claws. They had this unique curved ends that made it look like the claws actually burst out in between his fingers. But when he saw Hack A Day’s electrified Mjolnir, Hobson was inspired to do the same.

Hobson hooked up the claws to an old transformer from an oil furnace. Here’s the result:

Hobson says that he could theoretically wear the electrified claws as long as he wore well-insulated gloves as well. Then maybe he can do this!

I hope Mr. Hobson has a healing factor as well.

Assassin’s Creed IV Hidden Blade Replica for Sneaky Pirates

Ahoy assassin! If you thought the Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood Hidden Blade Replica was too flamboyant, perhaps the blade’s updated version will be more to your liking. Made by McFarlane Toys, this life-size replica forgoes the shiny PVC vambrace for a simpler one made of leather. I meant leathARRRR.

As with the previous replica, you don’t have to worry about being hurt or hurting someone with the blade because it’s made of soft plastic. Todd McFarlane himself told Kotaku, “When you press the spring it actually shoots out, like a blade should. There’s a snap to it. Then you get to the end and realize you can curl the tip on it, so it’s not going to do any real damage.”

Set sail for Gamestop to pre-order the Assassin’s Creed IV Hidden Blade Replica for $40(USD). It is a rare piece of treasure, for it is one of the few remaining reminders of what an assassin used to be. Nowadays, I wouldn’t be surprised if Edward Kenway will end up having a hidden ship cannon gauntlet and neon-colored clothes.

LEGO & Sony Make Bricks with Embedded Technology: Mindstorms EV4?

The Mindstorms line already makes it possible to create robots, machines and other moving and highly interactive toys out of LEGO. But the company isn’t resting on its laurels. Recently LEGO teamed up with Sony to make what they’re calling Toy Alive – prototype LEGO bricks that have motors, LEDs and even cameras.

lego sony prototype toys

Toy Alive was one of the prototypes shown off by Sony Computer Science Laboratories Tokyo at its 25th Anniversary open house. As you’ll see in the video below, the embedded gadgets can be controlled wirelessly. There are motors that let you race LEGO, actuators that can be used to destroy LEGO structures on cue and a LEGO toy with a built-in camera that sends footage to an iPad app.

Sony researcher Alexis Andre explained that the collaboration aims to look at ways to combine the strengths of videogames and LEGO. The Toy Alive prototypes provide kids with a wider array of interactivity compared to normal LEGO toys without restricting their imaginations, as most videogames do. You can listen to Andre talk about Toy Alive at around 0:58 in the video below:

Samurai Fett Custom Star Wars Action Figure: Boba Blade

He’s squat, he’s got tusks, twin blades, much honor, and he is on the hunt for Han Solo. He is Samurai Fett. This sweet custom made Star Wars inspired Boba Fett samurai action figure was created by Emmanuel Pérez del Río, and it looks amazing.

This thing kicks ass. There’s no way that this Fett wouldn’t have survived the Sarlacc pit. Be sure to hit up that link above because there are a ton of images of this one and other awesome samurai figures he has created.

This guy needs to get with a toy company and let the masses enjoy playing with these things. I’d love to see a whole series of Samurai Star Wars characters.

Puggle Stuffed Toys: Cuter than the Dog

deviantART member Callykarishokka makes very cute stuffed toys that she calls puggles. I’m not sure if she came up with the name herself or if this is a type of stuffed toy, but the name certainly fits the appearance of the toys. Most of the puggles belong in what she calls Puggleformers: adorable versions of Transformers.

The Autobot logo alone is killing me with cuteness. Cally has also made puggle versions of other geeky characters for her customers.

Airfield LED Kit for Pinball Playfields: Flippin’ Awesome

Thanks to videogames, pinball has been relegated to a niche. But it still has its fans, some so addicted to the machines that they hang entire pinball playfields on their walls as decoration. Jeremy Williams and his friend invented Airfield, an LED kit that makes mounted or hung playfields come alive.

airfield pinball playfield led kit by jeremy williams

Airfield runs on a custom circuit board designed by Williams. It comes with 38 light cables – each with 2 LEDs at the end – plus all the materials you need to attach the board and cables to the rear of your playfield. Williams also commissioned an easy to use LED sequence program that you can find on his website. When you’re happy with the sequence you made, download it then install it to the Airfield via its microSD port (the Airfield kit already comes with a microSD card).

Skip to about 2:55 in the video below for another look at Airfield in action:

You can buy Airfield for $219 (USD) from Ledseq. I hope future models of the Airfield will have the option to add sound effects.
