Dexter Lunchbox Looks Bloody Good

Ok, so it’s officially being called a “tin tote,” but I’d totally bring my lunch to school or work in this Dexter lunchbox if I didn’t work from home.

Bif Bang Pow! will be releasing this Dexter tote just in time for San Diego Comic-Con – and for the final season of the show. It’s modeled after Dexter’s window air conditioner and even comes with a wooden slide tray and “blood” slides. It also comes with a posable 3-3/4″ tall Dexter action figure, complete with blood spattered shirt (he’d never be so sloppy), an ID badge and a camera. As a bonus, it includes a talking keychain which repeats phrases from the show.

You can pre-order the Dexter tin tote/lunchbox over at Entertainment Earth for $49.99(USD).

Join the Empire or Starfleet with Your Own 3D Printed Star Wars & Star Trek Figurines

Go where none of your other Trekkie friends have gone before or become one of Django Fett’s clones with the force of 3D printing. Two separate services are offering to put your likeness on a Starfleet or stormtrooper figurine.

If you want to be a tiny and immobile stormtrooper from the Star Wars universe, the Disney empire is the place to go. Starting May 17, 2013, you can head to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and have your face scanned. After paying $100 (USD) and waiting at least 7 weeks, you’ll have your own stormtrooper figurine.

On the other hand, if being a long-sleeved space explorer is your thing, just head to Cubify’s website to order a Star Trek figurine.

Unlike the appropriately uniform nature of Disney’s stormtroopers, the Star Trek figurines are fairly customizable. You can choose the gender, pose, shirt color and even the rank of your figurine. All you need to provide are reference photos and $70. Head to Engadget to see more images and a video of sample Star Trek figurines.

Win an Awesome LEGO Aliens Power Loader from Ichiban Toys!

While I’d personally love to have a full-size Aliens Power Loader exoskeleton suit, I don’t think I have enough room to store it in my garage. This little LEGO model is the next best thing, and you can win one, thanks to our friends at Ichiban Toys, and our new website, MightyMega.

power loader

This 146 piece LEGO model is based on the Caterpillar P-5000 Powered Work Loader, and features posable arms and claws, along with many other details which help make it an accurate representation of the one seen piloted by Ripley in Aliens. While all of the components are official LEGO parts, many of them are rare and difficult to find. The completed model measures about 4.5 inches-tall, and will look great sitting on your shelf alongside an Alien Queen action figure. It even comes with the little Ripley action figure shown in the image.

You can find more pictures of the Aliens Power Loader model over on MightyMega, and you can enter the contest below:

Monsterbrick Custom LEGO R2-D2s: Bleepin’ Wild

We’re no stranger to Matt Armstrong aka Monsterbrick’s bricksnapping prowess. Some of his newest creations are for the upcoming LEGO Star Wars Days that will be held at LEGOLAND California from June 15-16, 2013. Matt made these astromechs using the instructions on the official LEGO R2-D2 kit and parts from his own LEGO collection.

Matt calls this rainbow-colored astromech RU-KRAZY (the droid’s answer is yes, by the way). The black one is called the Death Star Droid R2-Pi while the pink, purple and beige mech is called R2-QT-Pi. Awwww.

3D Printed Legend of Zelda Items: Hyrule Foundry

A die-hard Legend of Zelda fan saw the wisdom in using the power of 3D printing to bring the game’s items to life. He also has the courage to sell the items despite the looming threat of Nintendo’s octorok lawyers. He calls his endeavor the Hyrule Foundry. I like to call it the Nintendo 3DP.

The potions are still being finalized and the arrows are in the wrong color, but otherwise the Hyrule Foundry features all 32 items from the classic adventure game, from the Wooden Sword to the Ladder to the Book of Magic. A bonus consequence of the Hyrule Foundry is that we now have an exchange rate for Rupees. One Rupee is $12 (USD). But for some reason two Rupees are worth $18. Hmmm. Hylian math is weird.

You can read more about the Hyrule Foundry on its official blog. If you can’t go alone without these items any longer, you can buy them at the Hyrule Foundry shop on Shapeways. They’re quite expensive though – the cheapest one is $4 for two arrows; the entire set sells for $320(USD).

Ouya Game Console Launch Delayed

If you’re one of the vast number of people who backed the Ouya game console when it was on Kickstarter, another bit of bad news has turned up. The company has announced that it has again delayed the launch of the Android-powered game console. The good news is the delay is only an additional three weeks, at least right now.

ouya console 1

The original launch date was to be June 4th, and the new launch date is the 25th. Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman says that the decision was made to be able to meet the expected high demand in retail outlets. However, another reason for the delay has to do with the original design of the game controller.

Uhrman said that the buttons were sticking under the edges of the faceplate when pressed on some occasions. The fix for the problem was to make the whole for the buttons slightly larger. Ouya says that controls in production right now have larger buttons and the problem has been addressed.

Uhrman said, “We’ve had incredibly positive reactions from our retail partners, and so in order to meet their greater than expected demand, we decided to shift the launch date by a couple of weeks – three weeks – which will allow us to create more units and, basically, have more units on store shelves in June.”

Luminescent Plant Kickstarter Project: Miracle Glow

I’ve seen some offbeat projects turn up on Kickstarter over the years, but a project that’s there now called Glowing Plants is one of the strangest. You can probably figure out what the project is about simply from the name. The people behind the project want to create plants that glow to provide natural lighting with no electricity.

glow plant

That sounds like something right out of Avatar. Exactly how the people are genetically creating glowing plants is rather difficult to describe. All you really need to know is that if you choose to back the project over on Kickstarter, you can get seeds to grow your own glowing plants.

The project was initially seeking to raise only $65,000(USD). With 28 days left to go, the project has blown through its goal, raising over $295,000 to date.

A pledge of $40 or more will get you your own package of glowing plant seeds. The specific plant is an Arabidopsis. A $150 pledge will land you an already growing plant. If at least $400,000 is raised, people who pledge $150 or more will get you a glowing rose as well. If you pledge $250 or more, you can get your own DIY kit allowing you to make any of your plants at home glow.

Street Legal Batman Tumbler Replica Rises

The Gumball 3000 is an international rally for rich people who own exotic supercars. It’s a chance to show off and let their expensive toys roar. But this year’s race will feature one car that’s surely more exotic than even the newest Lambo. It’s a life-size replica of the Tumbler from Nolan’s Batman films.

The car was commissioned by a group of gearheads from Saudi Arabia who call themselves Team Galag. According to Yahoo! Autos, the replica has a 400hp engine, goes up to 100mph and cost $1.6 million (USD) to build. A Wayne-level budget; I guess that adds to the authenticity. Autoblog says that the car was made by Parker Brothers Concepts, who are no strangers to building wacky one-off vehicles for the rich and famous.

Flying R/C Enterprise NCC 1701-D: Captain, The Rechargeables Can’t Hold Her Much Longer!

Watching this video of this guy making his own model of the Starship Enterprise D – then making it fly – is truly inspirational. It is a fully functional R/C model. It’s even illuminated by super bright LEDs and fiber optics. Honestly, I was in geek heaven watching this.

enterprise d flies
YouTuber TheMiro59 built this functional model of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D last year. It doesn’t fly perfectly, but it does fly. The video takes you through the build process and all of the test flights. The first flight is kind of funny as it nose dives into a net like it had been caught in a Tholian web – though after a while, he does get the hang of flying the decidedly less than aerodynamic starship.

Still, all I can say is this guy did an awesome job. The man believed it and lived the dream. Now somebody needs to start mass-producing these so we can all own one.

LEGO Xbox 360 Disc Changer Isn’t Really for the Lazy

If you and your indolent ass ever wished that there was a gadget that could insert your Xbox 360′s discs for you, this contraption is not the answer. Not only because it’s not really practical, but because you’ll never be able to build it in the first place.

lego nxt xbox 360 disc changer by zwenkka

This impressive, but silly disc changer system was made by a mad genius who calls himself Zwenkka. He made it out of about 3,000 parts, including three LEGO Mindstorms NXT micro-computers, seven NXT servos, an R/C motor and a light sensor. The system is operated via a mobile app. Zwenkka selects a disc by entering a number between 1 and 32 (because the tray holds 32 discs). His phone relays the selected disc via Bluetooth and the robot does the rest – slowly. It takes 42 seconds to change a disc.

I wonder how it remembers the location of the open slot on the tray when it has to return a disc. I also wonder if it can be tweaked so it delivers food to one’s mouth instead. Head to Palikkatakomo for more on the Xbox 360 disc changer.
