MR-808 Naturalizes the TR-808 Synthesizer

Moritz Simon Geist has an unusual name. He’s also a electronic musician who has been getting bored with the production of electronic music, probably because the technology has reached a stage when you can call up practically any instrument with virtually no effort. So he decided to make a drum machine that plays samples in real-time, using actual drums. And robots.

mr 808 robot installation by moritz simon geist

Geist decided to emulate the legendary Roland TR-808, the drum machine that kickstarted the careers of many artists, despite – or is it because of? – the fact that it doesn’t sound like any real drum kit. The TR-808 uses analog circuits to create its sounds, but Geist’s installation replicates these sounds physically via percussion instruments, hence the name Mechanical Replica-808, or MR-808. The real kicker here is that Geist doesn’t play the instruments himself; he built robots that he triggers with the help of an Arduino microcontroller and Ableton, a music software. Then he housed the robots in an oversized case that resembles the TR-808.

Now that’s a high tech emulation of a low tech gadget. Check out Geist’s blog for more details on his creation.

Kaleidoloop Sound Collector: for Wannabe Foley Artists

In case you haven’t noticed, everything is a remix. Good artists and inventors stock up on influences and material from other sources. If you’re a musician or if you want to make your own sound effects or if you just want something to listen to when you’re wasted, you can compile sounds wherever you go with the Kaleidoloop.

kaleidoloop sound collector

The Kaleidoloop was invented by Critter & Guitari, maker of the popular Pocket Piano synthesizer. The Kaleidoloop lets you record sounds and then manipulate those sounds on the fly. The sounds are recorded as .wav files on an SD card (the Kaleidoloop comes with a 256MB SD card). It also has a 3W speaker so you can listen and tweak the sounds you recorded on the go.

Here’s a trippy explanation of the Kaleidoloop:

You can order the Kaleidoloop directly from Critter & Guitari for $299 (USD). I wish they’d come up with a cheaper version; I’ll only use it to record my friends’ favorite expressions and a laugh track so we can pretend we’re in a sitcom.

Kia Unveils Four New Justice League Superhero Themed Vehicles

A few weeks back we mentioned a customized Kia Optima SX Limited done in partnership between Kia and DC Entertainment in a Batman theme. I don’t think a billionaire/playboy/superhero would be seen cruising around in a Kia personally. Still the Batman car was pretty cool.

kia justice

Kia has now unveiled four more super hero themed customized cars at SEMA 2012. The other four cars are styled after other core members of the Justice League include the Flash Forte Koup, Aquaman Rio 5-door, Cyborg Forte 5-door, and Green Lantern Soul. All four of the new cars have customized exteriors with cues from the superheroes outfits as well as customized interiors.

Most of the cars were done in cooperation with West Coast Customs, with help from RIDES and Super Street for others. All five customized superhero vehicles are on display in Las Vegas right now. I guess this will reveal my comic book ineptitude – but I’ve never even heard of Cyborg. I hear there’s a Wonder Woman car somewhere in that picture parked next to her jet. I can totally imagine Doctor Sheldon Cooper cruising the streets in the Flash Forte Koupe, even though he doesn’t like to drive.

Kyosho Space Ball R/C Chopper: Spaceballs: The Helicopter

Children are masters at breaking toys. They also have a doctorate in getting themselves hurt. Kyosho’s remote-controlled helicopter mitigates both tendencies with one feature. The entire thing is inside a spherical plastic cage that protects both itself and the people it will inevitably hit. Better a slight bruise than a nasty cut.

If the company’s name didn’t clue you in as to where this toy is from, its bonus feature will. It has an atomizer, so you can put perfume in it and spread the fragrance around. Because that’s what every toy helicopter has been missing all along.

You can order the Space Ball on Kyosho’s online shop [JP] for ¥6,279 (~$79 USD). Perfume not included.

Takara Tomy Arts Penlight Helps You Draw Light Paintings with Ease

Light painting can be a pretty awesome technique, which involves the capture of a moving light source, using long-exposure photography. Photographers have created some pretty amazing images using the medium, but it can be complicated to pull off unless you know exactly what you’re doing, and have a camera with full manual exposure controls. Now the fine folks at Japan’s Takara Tomy Arts have released a little gadget and app combo which makes it easy for anyone with an iPhone or iPad to make their own light paintings.

takara tomy oekaki light pen

This little penlight gadget, thats name roughly translates to “Oekaki: The Night Sky” provides a bright, point source of light, and works with a companion iOS app to let you record long-exposure images. Simply start up the app, place your phone in the included base (or stand up your iPad), and start drawing in space. The penlight itself lets you choose from combinations of cyan, magenta or yellow light in 8 levels each, providing for a total of 27 colors for your images, and you can shoot either stills or time-lapse video with the app.

You can check out the app and pen in action in this clip (though it is in Japanese, it’s pretty easy to follow), or you can download the app itself for free here – though you’ll really want to have the light pen or a good point light source to make it work. I tried it out with a laser pointer aimed at the wall and it worked pretty well.

The app and light pen combo makes it shockingly easy to create light paintings. While the gadget was designed for Japanese markets, you can pre-order one for worldwide shipment over at Gizmine now for $69.99 (USD) with an estimated ship date of November 20th.

iStrike Shuttle iOS Drone Drops Ping Pong Balls

There are plenty of R/C flying toys on the market these days, but I don’t know of many that can actually launch projectiles. The iStrike Shuttle is a flying drone which can not only buzz around, but can drop ping pong balls.

istrike shuttle

While I wish it could drop hundreds of balls, a la Mr. Moose, it can only drop one at a time. But that’s one more than my AR.Drone can do. Dream Cheeky’s iStrikeShuttle features a built-in gyroscopic technology to help it keep stable and balanced in flight, and can be controlled by your iOS device using Bluetooth connectivity.

The guys at Dream Cheeky are extremely close to having a production version ready, and just need to raise some funds to get the project over the finish line. If you’re one of the first 200 to head over to Kickstarter to support the iStrike Shuttle, you can grab one for $85(USD), a significant discount off the $129.99 retail price. Assuming they can hit their $30,000 fundraising goal by Thanksgiving, you should have one in hand in time for Christmas.

LEGO FunHaus is Really a Fun House

As you know, we love our LEGO around here. Every time I think I’ve seen it all, my faith in the creativity of humankind is restored by yet another LEGO build. This particular construction was inspired by the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muerto, or The Day of the Dead.

lego funhaus 1

LEGO-maniac Brickbaron created this bright and colorful scene of a fun house, loaded with happy (and somewhat terrified) minifigs as they make their way in and out of the FunHaus (which, coincidentally isn’t Spanish at all).

lego fun haus

It’s embellished with skulls and a facade loaded with eyeballs and chompy teeth to lure you in. It’s also got an awesome moving scene in the middle, which you can check out in the video clip below:

Brickbaron also says the scene was highly influenced by the works of artist Pooch, and I suggest that you check out his website for some cool and unusual paintings. Be sure to check out the hi-res images of FunHaus over on Flickr too.

Disney Super Robot Chogokin: Defender of the Magic Kingdom

As if hanging out with videogame characters wasn’t cool enough, Mickey Mouse and his Disney pals are connecting with geeks even more with the introduction of this awesome Bandai Chogokin action figure.

disney super robot chogokin

As with other super robots, this one is made of smaller robots: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy and Pluto. It’s possible that there are other elements to the uber-robot that are not included in the gallery below. Either that or Pluto’s doghouse pops out of his butt.

I wonder if it has a huge keyblade. Kotaku says the action figure will sell for ¥13,440 (~$168 USD). It won’t be available until March 2013, but Bandai will show off a prototype of the action figure at Akihabara UDX from October 26-29, 2012.

Mega Man Bobble Heads Bobble on By

If you’re a fan of Mega Man (or Rockman if you live in Japan), then you’ll definitely want to put down your NES controller long enough to grab this set of cool and bubbly Mega Man Bobble Buddies.

mega man bobble heads

These 3.5-inch-tall bobble heads capture the spirit some of my favorite Mega Man characters, including Elec Man, Proto Man, Guts Man and of course, Mega Man himself. Now they need to make a Sniper Joe bobble head to go with. You can pre-order them over at Entertainment Earth for $34.99(USD) for the complete set of four, and they ship this November.

On a totally unrelated note, have there ever been Bubble Bobble bobble heads? There really should be.

Adult Fans of LEGO Get to Play: No Kids Allowed!

I’ve loved LEGO bricks since I was a little kid. I’ve never had the time or patience to build some of the more complex and gigantic creations that some of you guys have, but I’m still a huge fan. Now adult LEGO fans have an opportunity to play with their bricks without feeling out of place.

legoland discovery center 1

The guys at LEGOLAND Discovery Center Chicago are hosting their first ever No-Kids-Allowed night, just for adult fans of LEGO. The event is only open to guests aged 18 or older, and will include an opportunity to learn at an advanced model-builder workshop, as well as to participate in Halloween speed-build and creative challenges to win cool LEGO prizes.

Participants are also encouraged to bring their own models to show off at the event, and to dress up for the costume contest. I can only imagine how many Minifig costumes are going to turn out for the party.

The $19 registration fee will also grant unlimited access to LEGOLAND Discovery Center Chicago (and its over 3 million bricks) for the night.

The event takes place at the Streets of Woodfield, 601 N. Martingale Road in Schamburg, IL, from 6:30 to 9:30pm on Monday, October 29, 2012.
