ThinkGeek 8-bitty Mobile Gaming Controller Finally Ships

The first time we talked about the 8-bitty controller for your mobile gaming device was back in February. Yeah, we never thought it would ship either. If you’ve been waiting for that little old school Nintendo-style controller to finally ship, today is the day. As of right now you can hop over to ThinkGeek and pick one up for yourself for about 30 bucks.

The 8-bitty is a small handheld controller powered by a pair of AAA batteries. It uses Bluetooth to connect to a number of different portable devices on the market today including iOS as well as Android tablets and smartphones. The controller has eight buttons total including four buttons on the face, a select button, start button, and a pair shoulder buttons.

It also has a D-pad for controlling movement. The controller was developed using an open platform with no licensing fees or permissions needed to create apps that support it. ThinkGeek says that it is fully compatible with the Atari Greatest Hits iPad app, and any of the over 150 other games with iCADE support.

Griffin Unveils Moto TC Monster and Moto TC Racer iOS R/C Cars

Griffin makes all sorts of accessories for Apple products like the iPhone and the iPad. The company has unveiled a couple of new toys that use iOS devices as controllers. The toys in question include a monster truck and little racing dune buggy called the Moto TC Monster and the Moto TC Racer.

The Monster is available right now and sells for $59.99(USD). It uses Bluetooth connectivity from the smartphone to send signals to the vehicle for control. The vehicle can be controlled using fingers on a virtual steering wheel or by tilting the device using its motion sensors. The controller app also features a slide controller where you can slide your finger back and forth to direct the truck.

Drivers can also set up a preset route to have the truck automatically run a specific route with no interaction. The Racer is a smaller buggy style car that will launch in the middle of November for $29.99. It will use an integrated RF sensor and an accessory that plugs into the headphone port of your device. Its app will support control using virtual steering wheel or motion. Both devices require iOS 5.0 or higher to operate.

AT-AT Bookends for Late Night Reading on Hoth

Star Wars fans tend to accumulate a lot of books because there have been so many expanded universe adventures and special collectors editions over the years. What do you do with all of these books? You put them between a pair of AT-AT bookends, that’s what.

AT AT Bookends
How awesome do these Imperial Walker bookends from Gentle Giant look? They sell for $225(USD), and are cast from polystone and hand-painted. They just look amazing. They will hold your books, cds, whatever. They also look great displayed by themselves.

As far as I’m concerned, there’s really no cooler vehicle in the Star Wars universe. Even if a snowspeeder could take it down with some cable in like two minutes, I’d pilot an AT-AT through the snow if I could.

CarBot R/C Car Driven by Tablet or Smartphone

Over the years, I’ve seen more than a few remote-controlled toys that use the iPhone or other smartphones as their controller. Several of these little devices have come from a company called DeskPets. DeskPets is back with another cheap remote controlled toy that uses Android or iOS devices as the controller.

The new toy is called the CarBot and it is available in four different colors including red, blue, green, and yellow. Each of the different colors operates on its own infrared code allowing up to four of the cars to be used at one time. The car features a battle mode that lets players challenge each other and even fire virtual rockets at each other to take down their opponents.

The CarBot also has a maze mode that allows players to set up a maze for the toy to navigate precisely. It also has a personality mode with sounds and lights as well as a mute button for noiseless play.

The little CarBot is able to race at up to 2 feet-per-second, and recharges using an integrated USB connector. It takes 40 minutes of charging for about 15 minutes of play. The CarBot can be purchased now at Brookstone, Best Buy, and Toys “R” Us stores for $29.99 (USD).

Dalek Plush Baby Toys are Too Cute to Exterminate Us (or Are They?)

If there’s one word you don’t usually picture when you think about Daleks, it’s “cute”. But these plush Daleks are the cutest Daleks I’ve ever laid eyes on.

They’re made by crafter Fassbaby out of 100% acrylic baby yarn (sounds cruel),  stuffed with fiber fill, and are safe for infants who don’t know how evil a these cyborgs can truly be. They come in a variety of soft and soothing colors, and are just the thing to keep future Time Lords on their toes. Also, these are the only Daleks I know with jingly-jangly, timey-wimey bells inside of them.

You can find the Dalek plushies over on Etsy for $18 to $25(USD) each, depending on size. Grab ‘em up before Davros rises from the ashes of the Crucible, and commands them to exterminate us all.

Lagrange L1 Turns Any Skateboard into an Electric Vehicle… for a Price

A new project has landed on Kickstarter that looks pretty interesting. The project is for a skateboard truck (the axle assembly) that has provisions for electric motor and controls. When attached to a traditional skateboard deck, the Lagrange L1 converts it into an electric vehicle.

l k1

RedRock Boardshop, the people behind the project say that they have tested the system with a 200-pound rider and have been able to achieve an electric driving range of 10 to 15 miles at 20+ mph. I know this sounds really cool, but when you look at the fine details this is a very expensive DIY kit for what amounts to a plaything. It will cost you at least $300 to get the skate truck and required brackets. That doesn’t include the electric motor, electronics, and other various parts.

You’ll need to spend $950(USD) or more to get the motorized skate truck with electronics, remote control, and the battery. You’ll still have to add the deck, wheels, front truck, and a backpack to hold the battery. If this sounds interesting and you can stomach the money, watch the video and see the device in action. While there have been several other electric skateboard projects in recent months, the Lagrange L1 lets you use your own custom skate deck as well as fine-tune it to your own riding preferences.

Unfortunately, the project is a long way from its funding goal, as it’s seeking $99,999 and has only raised about $5000 with 12 days to go.

Four-Wheeler + Jetski = Quadski

I think like most people who grew up watching James Bond hoon that white Lotus Esprit around Greece and then drive it directly into and out of the ocean where it became a submarine, I’ve always wanted an amphibious vehicle. You still can’t buy a Lotus that transforms into a submarine, but pretty soon you’ll be able to purchase the Quadski.

qs 1

The Quadski is an amphibious vehicle designed to carry one person that can transform from a four-wheeler to a jet ski-like vehicle in 5 seconds at the press of a button. The vehicle is capable of traveling at 45 mph both on land and in the water. When on land the four wheels allow the driver to cruise on just about any terrain out there.

qs 2

The vehicle can be driven directly into the water from the land. With the press of a button, its wheels move up and out of the way, completing the transformation into a water vehicle.  Power for the vehicle comes from a BMW four-cylinder engine.

qs 3

The two biggest problems I see with the Quadski are the fact that it only holds one person and the MSRP is expected to be about $40,000 (USD)… and it still doesn’t turn into a submarine.

LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles on the Snap Shell

Growing up I was a huge fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. Though I wasn’t a fan in the slightest of the horribly cheesy live-action TMNT movie. I was a bit excited when I heard that Nickelodeon was coming out with a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon and that cartoon has turned out to be impressively popular. To go along with that new cartoon, Nickelodeon and that purveyor of the geekiest of toys, LEGO, have announced new LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sets.

lego tmnt 1

The sets will bring Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and Leonardo to life as LEGO minifigs, complete with little weapons.

lego tmnt 3

The LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sets will include a series of vehicles and scenes building sets. The first set being shown off is #79104 – The Shellraiser Street Chase – complete with pizza delivery truck

The sets are currently being shown off at the New York Comic-Con through October 14th, and will arrive in stores in North America and the U.K. in January 2013.
