LEGO Induction Lamp Concept is a Really Bright Idea

There are already a number of ways to add lighting to LEGO kits, but none of them are particularly elegant, and the ones I’m aware of require wires and a large battery pack to light up your LEGO creations. But if this idea ever comes to fruition, we could have the coolest looking light-up LEGO sets ever.

light up lego

Designed by LEGO Cuusoo contributor Samuq, the LEGO Induction Lamp would be a set of special LED LEGO bricks which illuminate through wireless inductive power. The bricks would lock onto a special baseplate with the induction circuitry built in. Each brick would then have a set of two coils – one for receiving power from the baseplate, and a second for passing along power to the next brick in the stack.

The basic bricks would come in a simple 1×1 configuration, but there’s no reason why larger variants with more LEDs couldn’t be made. They also could come in other colors besides white. Samuq admits that his concept design needs refinement from an electrical engineer, but the general idea is brilliant. I’m hopeful that LEGO considers this idea for implementation, and if you want to help make that dream become a reality, head on over to Cuusoo and show your support by casting a vote for these cool light-up LEGO bricks.

Street Fighter Chess Set: Ryu’s Fist to Sagat’s Face, Check

Although most of us never go past mashing buttons in fighting games, the truth is the genre is all about tactics and strategy, reading your opponent and coming up with the right move at the right time. Or so I’ve heard. I’m still button-mashing. The point is Street Fighter and chess are not that different. Or maybe they are. I don’t know. Admitting I suck confuses me.

As part of its cashing-in celebration of the fabled fighting game’s 25th anniversary, Capcom is offering a limited edition chess set featuring the game’s characters as the pieces. The busts are made from silver and pewter colored resin, while the board is made of smoked and sandblasted glass. The game board also doubles as the storage for the pieces.

Ryu and M. Bison are the kings, Chun-Li and Juri are the queens, Ken, Guile, Balrog and Vega are bishops, E. Honda, Blanka, Rolento & Akuma are the knights, Dhalsim, Zangief, Sagat and Seth are the rooks, and Ryu’s fist and the Shadaloo winged skull are the pawns. I get that Capcom was going for the timeless and classy look here, but I wish they’d also release a variant where the pieces are appropriately colored.

Capcom sold 10 of these at the San Diego Comic Con for $400 (USD), but don’t worry, they have 4,990 more. You can pre-order the Street Fighter chess set at the Capcom store for $300.

Andromeda Tactical Lamp for at Home Mercenaries

Are you the hardcore military type? Are you out in the field so often doing special ops missions, that you feel more at home with military grade equipment than you do everyday objects? If so, you’ll want to check out the Andromeda Tactical Lamp.

andromeda lamp

This manly lamp comes from Sketchy Design Studio and is of course designed to look like a modern rifle. It features three Picantinny rails which are actually functional and can be used to adjust the height or attach other accessories, like a scope or a bayonet.

A pledge of $279(USD) or more gets you an Andromeda Tactical Lamp over on Kickstarter – where as of right now they have raised nearly all of their $70,000 goal with 39 days to go, so it’s very likely to be going into production.

LEGO The Dark Knight Rises Minifigures Rise

Give your minifigs the hero they deserve – and the villain they don’t – with these official The Dark Knight Rises minifigures. They’re far from the first minifigs of Batman or even Bane, but they are the only ones officially based on the movie. In fact, they’re so faithful to the movie that you’ll have a hard time understanding minifig Bane.

Or not. I don’t really know where minifig enthusiasts go to get the latest releases, but they’re not available on the LEGO store yet. I’m sure they’ll show up soon enough. Or maybe we need to build a minifig Bat Signal to call them.

Give your minifigs the hero they deserve – and the villain they don’t – with these LEGO Batman minifigures. They’re far from the first minifigs of Batman or even Bane, but they are the best ones yet. And while they’re not officially tied to The Dark Knight Rises, you’ll still have a hard time understanding minifig Bane.

Necomimi Launches the Product We’ve All Been Waiting for: Brainwave Cat Ears

I was sitting around the house the other day thinking what I really needed to make my life complete was a pair of articulated cat ears that I could wear on my head. I mean, I have a cool car, a gigantic television, and a sweet job (not this one mind you). The only thing lacking in my life is a nice set of giant plush cat ears. You can imagine how happy I was to notice that Necomimi has now officially launched its Brainwave Cat Ears in the United States.

necomimi

We talked about these things last year and apparently you could previously find them at certain geek conventions. Apparently, they will now come to other retail locations for you to purchase for $99.95(USD). The idea is that the cat ears are on a headband that has a sensor that rests on your four head to read your brainwaves. The ears will tell other people what you’re feeling so you don’t have to bother with stupid stuff like talking to people.

The cat ears are able to show three emotional states. When something catches the wearer’s attention, the ears stand straight up. When the wearer is relaxed, the ears will droop down. When the user is both highly focused and highly relaxed the ears wiggle back-and-forth. Sadly it’s missing the indicator for “I’m going to dust you with bath salts and chew your face off.”

Spy Hawk Lets You Conduct Covert Surveillance on the Pool Party Next Door

I’m a sucker for remote-controlled toys, especially flying toys. Sadly I’m not qualified to fly any of the airplanes or helicopters I’ve ever tried. Generally I get to fly once and then crash during landing, destroying any chance at a second flight. RC geeks in the UK will soon be able to get a cool spy plane called the Spy Hawk, which to let you record your landing disasters – or the pool party your hot neighbor is throwing.

spy hawk

Spy Hawk is a three-channel mini glider that comes with an integrated first-person video system able to send five-megapixel live video feeds back to a 3.5-inch LCD on the remote control. The plane even has an autopilot mode with gyro stabilization that lets you get it to altitude, and then watch the video without having to worry about actually flying. The toy has a range of up to 600 m with an average flight time of 15 minutes on a single charge.

The system has an integrated four gigabyte memory card to store the video. It also uses intelligent signaling so you can fly more than one Spy Hawk at the same time. The Spy Hawk will sell for £249.95 (~$386 USD) when it lands next month over at Red5.

Sonic Hello Kitty Should Sell Out Speedily

Although he’s still a legend among fans of platform games, Sonic the Hedgehog hasn’t exactly had a great run in recent years. Perhaps some help from another famous mammal could boost his ratings?

sonic hello kitty

This kawaii mashup is the first of Sega and Sanrio’s character collaborations. Sonic Hello Kitty will first be released in Japan, particularly at the reopening of Sega’s Joyopolis amusement park in Tokyo. The hedgehog-cat will then make its way throughout the world by summer next year, along with the other mashups. I’m looking forward to Hangyodon Seaman. Actually I’m not.

Rolls-Royce LEGO Jet Engine: Rolego-Royce?

For this epic LEGO project, a team of people from Rolls-Royce the built an incredible 675-pound replica of the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 jet engine. The LEGO jet engine you see here took 152,455 bricks to build and is accurate all the way from the fins of the intake fan to the combustion chambers were jet fuel would be burned. The LEGO engine is nearly 5 feet long making it 4 feet shy of the real thing.

rolego royce

The actual Trent 1000 engine, which is used on the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner, is 9 feet long and weighs about 12,710 pounds. The entire LEGO engine consists of 160 separate engine parts and took a team of four people about eight weeks to build. The entire project is amazing, and the builders made the individual components from actual CAD drawings of the real parts.

The blades on the intake fan are so thin it’s hard to imagine them staying together. Rolls-Royce Chief Scientific Officer Paul Stein said the company built the engine to inspire the younger generation. “We are very pleased some of our own graduates and apprentices have contributed to building it, ensuring it is as realistic as possible,” Stein said in a statement. “We hope that this representation of our technology will help to enthuse and inspire the potential scientists and engineers of the future about the career opportunities they could pursue.”

Or maybe they just did it because it’s fun to play with LEGO bricks.

KRE-O to Unveil Official Star Trek Building Kits at Comic-Con

It has been about a year since Hasbro launched its own LEGO-style building sets under the name brand KRE-O. The first of those kits Hasbro offered were Transformers themed. The toy maker is back with a new line of KRE-O building sets that are officially licensed Star Trek kits, based on the J.J. Abrams-helmed Trek movie series.

kre o enterprise

There will be multiple building sets to be unveiled a preview night starting on July 11 at San Diego Comic-Con 2012. The first of the sets to be unveiled is a U.S.S. Enterprise kit. Some the details on this kit are missing such as exactly how big it is and how many parts it has, but it does look pretty good. The company will also offer special “KREON” figures of Trek characters.

KREON figures are the KRE-O versions of LEGO minifigs. Three of the special figures will include Kirk, Spock, and Bones. There’s no word on when the sets will be available for purchase or how much they will cost.
