LEGO Portal Gun Doesn’t Open Shortcuts to Legoland

The petition for an official LEGO Portal set is going strong, but it still hasn’t quite garnered enough votes to qualify for consideration from the powers that be. Maybe they should add this to the set to get more support: a life-sized LEGO Portal gun.

lego portal gun

The replica was made by YouTuber ferlessleedr, who works at the LEGO store in Minneapolis. He planned it over the course of a year and about three weeks to build. The gun is made of about 2,000 bricks and has a Mindstorms controller inside that handles the moving prongs and the  lights inside the gun. It’s not powerful enough to shoot actual portals though.

Imagine if he worked at a meat shop. Or a Swiss army knife store. or at Brando.

Flash Drive Packed inside a Real BMW M Keyfob

Sometimes I run across tech products that cross two different geek genres. That is certainly the case with this cool flash drive that merges car guy geekery with tech geek appeal. This official BMW flash drive has 8 GB of flash storage inside and looks like the actual M series carbon fiber key fob you get with factory hopped up BMW sports cars.

bmw m flashdrive

The flash drive has buttons that look like the ones for unlocking the door and the trunk, and has the official BMW logo and the M logo as well. The USB connector can be extended or retracted by pressing the trunk release button. The other buttons on the flash drive key fob surface do nothing but sit there looking authentic.

If you absolutely have to have one of these for yourself, you can order one direct from BMW for only $38. However, if you go full poser, attach it to your keychain, and pretend you actually own a BMW M vehicle, car guys will mock you.

Modder Builds the Ultimate Arcade Joystick for… Starcraft II?!

That’s right folks, this is an arcade style controller for a real time strategy game. Now you can pull off that 54-hit Zergling combo and trace a HCF route for your Marines. My ignorance in StarCraft II aside, control your fanboy rage and approach this mod as curio, not as an attack to your way of life pastime.

starcraft ii arcade stick

The controller was made by Mauricio Romano, a Master League StarCraft II player. It’s the winning entry in a contest held by fighting game website Shoryuken. So hate the contest organizer, not the contestant. Because it’s impossible to control SC II with just 6 buttons, Romano opted to go with 29 buttons, including two control buttons – one on either side – plus a space and a shift button. The hemisphere on the left looks like a trackball mouse, but it’s actually a joystick with a really large cap. The arcade influence also shows in the decal, which features Kerrigan, Raynor and a couple of Marines. There’s also a string of LEDs along the fringes of the case. The controller is recognized by a PC as a USB keyboard, so there’s no need to map keys or configure anything.

LEGO Settlers of Catan: There’s Nothing Boring About This Board Game

If you are a board game fan, you will recognize what this is immediately, an amazing LEGO version of Settlers of Catan. If you don’t know what that is, you have been missing out on a fun board game.
lego settlers 1
This Settlers of Catan board made entirely out of LEGO parts and that makes it pretty awesome. It is completely functional and was being shown off by creator Ryan H. at this year’s Brickworld convention. It features interlocking tiles and the tiles actually look like the different resources that they are supposed to represent. You can still put the roads and settlements on the board too.

It might be hard to transport, but if you show up with this at your local game night, people are going to freak out. This must have taken him a lot of time to finish. Awesome work!

Assassin’s Creed Hidden Blade Gauntlet Replica Can Be Yours for a Brotherly Price

You can easily find instructions to make your own Assassin’s Creed-style hidden blade, but if you don’t have the skills to put one together, check out this life-sized replica by prop maker NECA. It’s not made from steel, but I think we can all agree that that’s a plus.

The replica is based on the armored vambrace worn by the assassin so nice you played as him thrice Ezio Auditore in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. It’s made of PVC and ABS plastic, has buckle and velcro straps and a scary effective spring loaded mechanism that pops the blade out quite quickly.

Yikes. Even if it has a safety lock I’d be more comfortable if the blade was on the upper part of the gauntlet, Wolvie style. You can pre-order the replica from GameStop – where assassins shop and trade-in second hand weapons – for only $40 (USD). Reckless play will cost you a lot more than that.

Theme Park Lets You Drive Your Own Tank!

I don’t know about you, but ever since I saw the 1984 movie called Tank with James Garner, I’ve had a desire to drive a tank for myself. I think it would be awesome to drive the tank and if they let me shoot its gigantic gun, I might have a nerdgasm. Well, as it turns out, there’s a park in southern Minnesota that can fulfill your tank-driving dreams.

tank drive

The business is called, aptly enough, Drive-a-Tank and offers any driver the chance to get behind the controls of surplus military tanks and other armored vehicles. The park allows you to drive them around an old limestone quarry and you can even smash junk cars.

The tanks used at the park are Cold War era surplus items and there are now 11 different vehicles available on the 20-acre site. The site is 50 miles southwest of Minneapolis if you’re thinking about going. A basic package that lets you drive the tank and shoot a machine gun is $399. You can also go for more expensive packages that let you drive several vehicles and shoot other weapons including assault rifles. If you want to smash your own junker car with the tank, you need to cough up $549. If you want even more, for $3500 you can drive the tank through a trailer house.

GameStop Gives You 30% More on Trade Towards Google Nexus Seven Pre-Orders

Google unveiled its slick 7-inch Nexus 7 tablet this week at its Google I/O conference. This little tablet will sell for $199 when it launches in the middle of July and will be running the Android Jelly Bean 4.1 OS. If you have your heart set on one of the little tablets and you’re like me with a drawer full of old gadgets you don’t use, you might want to swing by GameStop.

GameStop is offering a special deal to people who bring in old gadgets to trade on a pre-order of the Nexus 7 tablet. The retailer will give you 30% more for any item you trade in towards the pre-order of the little Google tablet. That 30% extra trade is good on video game hardware, software, accessories, and other smartphones and tablets.

Trade values for old Android tablets can go up to $250 depending on the condition and the tablet, so you might even be able to trade in an older tablet and walk out with a shiny new one. If you have a bunch of stuff you don’t use anymore, this may be the perfect way to get yourself a new tablet.

LEGO Portal Set: Vote for It. For Science.

Remember the fan made LEGO Portal 2 figures? Remember how your insides hurt for days from wanting those toys so bad? Round up that desire and channel it into one mouse click. A group of fans have submitted a proposal to LEGO for three sets based on the hit puzzle game.

lego portal 2 cuusoo

The concept was submitted by Team Jigsaw, four LEGO enthusiasts who banded together in 2011 to compete in LEGO competitions. Now they need our help to make their concept come true. Although after you see what they have in mind I bet you’ll need no convincing. The three sets are GLaDOS’ Chamber, a Modular Testing Chamber and a Puzzle Board Game. All the major characters are represented here: Chell, Wheatley, the Companion Cube, the turrets and of course the adorable and murderous GLaDOS. And the potato.

As with all LEGO pieces, you can mix and match these sets with each other, not to mention other LEGO sets, like the Minecraft set. But before that can happen, you and about 8,800 other people need to vote for the concept on LEGO Cuusoo. Go on, make your dreams come true.
