Chainmaille Necktie: for Knights of the Cubic Cubicle

Defend yourself from sword strikes and shark bites in the office with Thinkgeek’s Chainmaille Mail Necktie. It’s made of anodized aluminum, so I guess it will offer some sort of protection from corporate get-togethers.

The funny thing is, it’s the necktie part that isn’t genuine. I think it’s more of a choker with a huge pendant.

Ride to ThinkGeek and get the Chainmaille Necktie for $30 (USD). I’ll wait for the plate necktie.

CosTrader Costume Buy & Sell Market: Website Merchant Cosplay

There are thousands of sites that makers can use to sell their costumes, including major ones such as eBay, Etsy and deviantART. But if you want a site that’s focused solely on costumes, check out CosTrader. It’s a new website for people looking to buy or sell costumes, whether brand new or used.

CosTrader allows sellers to put up any number of items to sell at no charge. The site then takes a 3% cut when an item is sold. You need to create an account to buy or sell from the site. It’s a minor inconvenience but I guess it’s to ensure that both buyers and sellers can easily contact and identify each other.

Put on your browser and head to CosTrader to see what’s on display, which is admittedly not much because the site is still young. A market lives and dies by its offerings, so hopefully it attracts quality costume makers.

X-23 Cosplay Girl: The Perfect Killing Machine

Laura Kinney aka X-23 was cloned from a damaged copy of Wolverine’s genes, and was created to be an assassin in the X-Men universe. With her sharp Adamantium claws, I certainly wouldn’t want to mess with her. And in real life, she looks even more deadly.

This awesome costume was put together and modeled by KOCosplay for Katsucon 19 and NYCC earlier this year, and all I can say is that I wouldn’t want to run into her in a dark alley. Especially with those spikes on her boots – and her ability to heal from any wounds in seconds.

KO worked with Ravenswood Leather to create the leather bits of her costume, and built the rest herself, including those deadly claws, and that X-Men belt buckle.

Pacific Rim Crimson Typhoon Cosplay Isn’t Worn by Triplets

Peter Kokis aka Brooklyn Robot Works made a shiny costume based on Crimson Typhoon, China’s ace against the kaiju in Pacific Rim. The costume is far from perfect – the proportions and even the colors are off, and it’s missing its trademark blades – but it’s still an impressive piece, especially when you find out what it’s made of.

Peter calls his costume the Brooklyn Typhoon. It took him a total of 550 hours to build. It probably takes him as long to walk a mile in it because it weighs 152lb. Peter says that his mini-jaeger is made from an assortment of everyday objects, including “2 rat traps, 7 mousetraps (2 types),  53 toy truck wheels,  2 business card holders,  hockey helmet,2 plungers,  rotating lawn sprinkler,  4 egg slicers,  4 ice scrapers,  4 ladles,  4 slotted spoons,  camping thermos, toilet flush valve,  8 ice skate blade guards (2 types),  2 baseball throat guards,  trashcan foot pedal,2 spoon draincups,  2 blender bases,  4 hair cutter spacers,  2 kneepads,  thermos base, ski goggles, football shoulder pads,  6 shinguards (3 types),  2 hockey leg guards,  wall outlet plate,  3 vitamin cases(2 types),  3 manicure bowls,  3 doorknob wall guards,  hand towel holder,  4 bicycle splashguards(2 types),  25 turnbuckles,  corner paint applicator,  slotted ladle,  2 faucet strainers,  paper towel holder,3 screen door latches,  handheld spotlight,  2 flashlights,  closet pole mounts,  lots of bottlecaps” and more. Your Ugly Christmas Sweater Just Went Digital

Mark Rober has been wowing us for three of years now with his innovative, high-tech Halloween costumes. In fact, he got so good at it that he quit his job at NASA to devote himself to "Digital Dudz" full-time. Now he’s applied the cyber-clothing concept to the perennial holiday favorite, the ugly Christmas sweater, and oh man, it’s kind of awesome.

Transformers Starscream Hoodie is Plotting Against Your Other Hoodies

A couple of weeks ago we checked out 80s Tees’ kick ass Voltron hoodie. It turns out the apparel shop also has something for Transformers fans. This officially licensed Starscream hoodie is based on the treacherous Decepticon’s design in the original Transformers cartoon.

As you can see the hoodie has wings that make it look like a wingsuit. But that doesn’t bother me; what bothers me is the canopy detail on the front of the hoodie. It will make skinny people look even thinner; just look at the dude in the pictures. I guess only robust people are worthy of wearing Starscream.

Practice your screechy voice and order the Starscream hoodie from 80s Tees for just $60 (USD).

Dune Sandworm Costume: We Have Wormsign

This awesome costume is a Dune sandworm that you can make yourself. It also could double as Sarlacc pit. He who controls the spice controls the universe, while he who controls the costume controls the worm – otherwise known as Shai Hulud.

If you want to get in touch with your inner worm and wriggle around in some sand, you can find the instructions for building your own here, thanks to Instructables contributor Canida.

For this costume you need a $13 kid’s-play tunnel, six yards of sandworm-tan fabric, mouth-pink fabric, poster board, wire, and a large cardboard box. You will also need some basic sewing skills. After you put them all together you have yourself an awesome worm costume.

I would suggest burying yourself in a sandbox or on the beach and leaping out to scare kids, but that’s just my personal preference.

3D Printed & Motion-Activated Iron Man Helmet: Nod On, Nod Off

A couple of years ago we checked out Ryan Brooks’ replica of Tony Stark’s briefcase suit from Iron Man 2. While the suit did transform and was wearable, it basically looked less like a briefcase and more of a pile of armor squished together. This year Ryan made a smaller but more polished Iron Man prop. It’s a Mk. III helmet that can be opened or closed just by nodding.

3d printed iron man helmet by ryan brooks 620x348magnify

Ryan 3D printed the helmet itself. He made it so the flaps at the neck area fold upwards so that he can wear the helmet.

Then he made a servo mechanism based on an Arduino Pro Mini with an Adafruit accelerometer. Ryan rigged the mechanism so that it would open the faceplate if he nodded backwards, and close the faceplate if he nodded forwards.

The servo mechanism also moves the lower jaw of the helmet when the faceplate is opened or closed.

If you’re a fellow tinkerer who’s working on your own Iron Man helmet, you might want to get Ryan’s servo mechanism, which you can purchase from his website.

Game Boy Color Costume Actually Plays Game Boy Advance Games: Tricky Treat

Back in 2009 we saw a dude who went as a playable Game Boy for Halloween. This year YouTuber MikeHandidate went as an updated version: a Game Boy Color. Perhaps realizing how awkward it would be to have the handheld’s buttons on his body, he chose to place the controls on his hands. Oh wait.

game boy color costume by MikeHandidatemagnify

Even though it’s not very polished in terms of appearance, I’m still impressed with Mike’s costume. But eagle-eyed Nintendo fans will dock him a few points, and not because it looks like a fifth grader cut and pasted most of his costume. It’s because he chose to run a Game Boy Advance game – I think it’s Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen –  on his costume. Mike said it’s because the screen on his costume has a 16:10 aspect ratio, so he thought a Game Boy Advance game would look better on it compared to a stretched out Game Boy Color game.

Now that’s a handheld game console.

Beetlejuice Maitlands Costumes Won’t Scare Winona, But Should Freak out Everyone Else

If you really want to scare somebody out of their house (or even your house after you are dead) there is no better way to do it than with these awesome Maitlands’ costumes from Beetlejuice.

maitlands 620x829magnify

They were built by instructables member TrustTheStar. If you’re thinking about building some for yourself, you’re basically making two large heads from big blocks of EPS construction foam.

maitlands1 620x829magnify

Once you have that you’ll need to cut the foam with a hot knife into the shape of each head and sand it. A dremel is also very handy. After you shape them, just paint them up, add some wigs and black mesh for the details. Also, you’ll need some styrofoam eyeballs for your fingertips.

maitlands2 620x829magnify

Now you are a pair of Beetlejuice monsters. Have fun scaring the bejesus out of people, whether it is Halloween or not. They look pretty awesome.
