DIY Motorized Couch: Ridin’ Lazy

Back in 2010 Nick Homer and his college buddy Stewart Clyde made headlines because of their silly invention: a remote-controlled motorized couch. Now Nick is working on a comprehensive guide for couch potatoes who have a very slight need for speed.

motorized couch by nick homer 620x391magnify

As with the original ride, Nick’s guide will consist of combining an electric wheelchair base with a loveseat. If you get both of those components used – and you should – the whole thing should cost you only about $150 (USD). Nick claims that his guide will have you napping in motion in just a few hours.

Lie down on your browser and head to Kickstarter. You only need to pledge $2 to gain access to Nick’s online guide, which will include videos, FAQs and recommendations for the supplies.

Giant Cat Couch Lets You Sit on Your Cat’s Lap

Any cat owner knows just how much cats love human laps. Now you can switch things up and sit on their lap for a change with this massive cat couch. This huge feline comes from Unfold, a design studio in Antwerp, Belgium and it is a cat lovers dream come true.

I call it a couch, but Unfold thinks of it as more of a sculpture. It is appropriately called Felix Domesticus. This is just one of five cat-themed elements of an art installation that the studio assembled in 2010. The 3.5-meter long cat takes up residence in an apartment’s master bedroom, while visitors to the exhibit can sit on it. I wonder what a small house cat would think about this?

Now if they only sold these things, we could all sit and lay on a giant cat, without getting fur all over our clothes.

You Won’t Notice Wookiee or Ewok Hair on This Chewbacca Sofa

Fans of the giant furballs known as Wookiees are going to love this Chewbacca Sofa. It comes from the design team at New York based Sentient. No Wookiees were actually harmed or made bald in the making of this hairy home decor.

It’s not technically a Wookiee sofa, but we know that hair when we see it. The base is made from reclaimed American oak boards, and the thing is just covered in Wookiee hide. Okay, it is actually long wool Icelandic sheepskin, which is super soft and will keep you warm. Each sofa is made to order and it was designed by Nersi Nasseri.

If I had this sofa, I would rig it so that a Wookiee roared every time someone sits down. Don’t let Chewie see this!

Octopus Couch is Perfect for Parties of Eight

So this isn’t really called the Octopus Couch, but it might as well be because this is exactly what a couch look like… if it drew inspiration from an octopus.

Designed by the Fernando and Humberto Campana, it’s actually called the Aster Papposus Sofa. But since none of us know what that really means, I think it’s safe to say that most people will liken their creation with an octopus.

Octopus Chair

The couch has eight plushy seats extending from the center. Eight more higher-level extensions emanate from the center to serve as arm rests for everyone who’s seated. It’s actually composed of two polyurethane and feather-filled cushions that have been fitted together to form the couch.

It doesn’t have a rigid frame, so it’s probably as comfortable as it appears to be (and as you imagine it to be!)

The Aster Papposus is priced at a whopping $71,633(USD).

The ‘CouchBunker‘ comes complete with bullet-proof cushions fitted with straps so they can be worn as armor when on the move. It’s a couch fit for a mobster or a SEAL team member. It’s Just $6,700(USD). Each cushion will cost you an additional $500 if you want them bulletproofed.

mpup Dog House Sofa Gives Pups a Couch of Their Very Own

While your cat might already have a sofa, dogs shouldn’t feel left out from your living room much longer. While you certainly can let your pooch up on the couch and sit on your lap or cushions, I’m sure some of you prefer to keep the dog hair away from where our guests sit. The Dog House Sofa helps alleviate this problem – assuming your dog isn’t too big.

Created by Korea’s mpup, this dog-friendly oak wood and fabric couch provides a special cubby on the side for your dog to nap in. While it doesn’t prevent your dog from jumping on the main part of the couch, it does give them a place of their own to chill out – or go when they need a time-out.

It also doesn’t hurt that it’s a good looking modern couch that should fit nicely into many decors.

There’s no word on if you can get the Dog House Sofa shipped outside of Korea, but you can find more pics and information on the sofa over on the mpup website.

Retro Video Game Cartridge Pillows Perfect for Making a NESt in Your Famicom Room

I’ve got a confession to make to my wife. Without her approval, I’ve been gradually transforming our basement media room into a shrine to all things geeky – with a decided tilt towards retro video games. I now know what pillows I must purchase for the couch. As a matter of fact, I just paid for them as I write this.

retro nes pillows 1

These awesome retro pillows look like classic NES game cartridges – though they feature some non-existent games on them – presumably because nobody wanted to pay Nintendo some exorbitant licensing fee. At least I don’t remember playing Unicorn’s Revenge or Lava Jump on my old 8-bit system. But then again, my brain might have been deprived of oxygen from blowing on all of those cartridges.

The pillows are made from polyester, and they measure 14″ x 12″ x 3.5″ each, which makes them too big to cram into your console, but much more comfortable than sitting on a stack of actual cartridges.

You can order a pair of the Retro Video Game Pillows over at ThinkGeek for $34.99(USD). Now when can I have some Atari 2600 cartridge pillows?

Backpack Couch: Oh, My Aching Back!

This cool looking sofa comes from backpack maker Eastpak and furniture designers Quinze & Milan. One thing is for sure. You will have plenty of room to store your remotes, DVDs, headphones and other stuff. And everything else in your home. The trick will be remembering which pockets you put your stuff in.
eastpak sofa 1
It’s too bad the compartments aren’t detachable. If they were, you could give backpacks to all of your friends. You would lose half of your couch though, but how cool would that be? Imagine going on a camping trip with a bunch of your friends and then when you get to the campsite, you can all band together and build a couch to sit on. This couch won’t do that, but it is still pretty cool. It’s just a pack for your back side. Not your back.

eastpak sofa black

It’s available from French retailer Singulier for €1639 (~$2063 USD) in either red or black, and you can find some cool matching ottomans (ottomen?) at YLiving, too.
