Sony's Crackle arrives on BlackBerry 10, reminds us to not watch Bad Boys II

Slowly, but steadily, BlackBerry’s building its BB10 app catalog with some major gets. Today, that burgeoning list grows by a very important one with the addition of Sony’s Crackle. The free, ad-based streaming video service, which culls together content from Sony’s various TV and film studios, is available to download now from BlackBerry World. It’s also compatible with the Q10’s teeny, 3.1-inch screen, so if you hate your good eyesight, you can devote an hour or two to reliving the opus that is Bad Boys II. Sure, popular apps like Instagram, Hulu Plus and Netflix have yet to make their way over to BB10, but you can’t fault the Waterloo-based outfit for getting users what it can. Even if that means bringing them Bad Boys II.

These new brands of smart TVs and Blu-ray players that support Crackle are in addition to the availability on Sony smart TVs and Blu-ray players previously. Crackle reports that the addition of its network on the LG, Samsung, and Vizio products makes Crackle available on all leading smart TV manufacturer devices. Crackle offers Hollywood movies, television programs, and original series.

Content on Crackle focuses on specific genres such as action, comedy, crime, horror, and sci-fi. One of the most interesting things about Crackle is that the app is free to download and network is free to watch. The streaming video offering provides users with unlimited ad-supported viewing of any content available.

Crackle has hundreds of films and full-length television episodes that are uncut and unedited. The network refreshes content with new titles every month. The streaming video service also has a recently launched app for PlayStation and apps available for Android phones and the iPhone and iPad. Viewers can also watch Crackle via Roku media players, the Xbox Live service, on Windows Phones, Nook tablets, and the Kindle Fire.

Crackle Arrives On Smart TVs And Blu-ray Players

crackle Crackle Arrives On Smart TVs And Blu ray PlayersThey say that there is no such thing as a free lunch in this world, but no one apparently informed Crackle that the same rule applies to video streaming services, and Crackle has decided to go ahead by making available their free video streaming service to major Smart TV models as well as Blu-ray players. Of course, those who are huge fans of free video streaming would have realized by now that Crackle is readily available on devices such as the smartphone, computer and video game console, so it is nice to see them expand their boundaries by including the Smart TV range from the likes of LG, Samsung, and Vizio.

Samsung would benefit more than the rest of the players mentioned here, as they will also see the ad-supported streaming service being offered for their family of Blu-ray players. This particular move by Crackle would affect only a bunch of countries to date, including folks living in North America, the UK, and Australia where LG and Samsung are concerned, while the Vizio Smart TV family in the US and Canada are the only beneficiaries. Crackle streaming video heads to LG, Samsung, and Vizio Smart TVs, Samsung Blu-ray players

Crackle video service heads LG, Samsung, and Vizio Smart TVs, Samsung Bluray players

Free video streaming service Crackle is already available on your smart phone, computer, and game console, but today the company announced its expansion to LG, Samsung, and Vizio Smart TVs. The expansion is twofold for Samsung, which is also adding the ad-supported streaming service to its line of Blu-ray players; Crackle characterizes today’s news as the conclusion of a strategy to bring the streaming service to, “all leading smart TV manufacturers.” Of course, that strategy is only complete in a handful of countries thus far — today’s additions apply to only the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia for LG and Samsung, while Vizio Smart TVs in the US and Canada are the only ones to get Crackle. All new iterations of the Crackle app are available via Samsung, LG, and Vizio’s respective app portals.

Roku update adds cross-provider search over Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, Vudu and Crackle

Roku update adds crossprovider search across Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, Vudu and Crackle

We’ve seen web portals that let you search for TV and movies on the internet across different services, but a new update for Roku is bringing that capability directly to its set-top boxes. Whether you’re searching by movie, TV show, actor or director it will sniff out related content across some of the higher profile services it offers, including Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Crackle, Vudu and HBO Go. The new Roku Search function is front and center (once your second gen HD or higher player has been updated to the latest version) and in our tests worked quickly, pulling up content wherever it was available and mentioning if it was available in HD. The only downside is navigating the onscreen keyboard via remote, although you can always sub in your mobile device thanks to those recently upgraded remote apps for iOS and Android. All in all Roku says it can reach its tendrils across around 130,000 titles and almost 100,000 actors and directors. Check after the break for a couple of screenshots and a quick demo video, hit the official blog for more info or force an update on your hockey puck to check it out yourself.

Crackle for Windows Phone opens up a new window of entertainment on your Nokia Lumia

If you happen to be in possession of a Windows Phone smartphone (being one of the minority at the moment), then you might be interested to hear in a new app that opens up a new channel of entertainment on your handset itself – Crackle for Windows Phone. In a nutshell, it will basically allow you to watch an entire selection of quality movies as well as TV shows right there and then on your Windows Phone-powered handset without requiring you to fork out a single cent. Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

First of all, here is a little primer. Crackle is a video streaming service, and it is also touted to be one of the fastest growing entertainment hubs in the world. It will carry the backing of Sony, allowing you to enjoy top notch films, TV series as well as original shows in their uncut glory right there and then on your handset. This free app can be downloaded from the Windows Phone Marketplace if you are interested. Good thing there are also parental controls which can be set so that your kids will not grow up faster than they should. Since the source is a Nokia-centric site, it makes perfect sense the the Nokia Lumia family has been “targeted” to carry this app.

Crackle’s free movie streaming expands to the Nook Tablet, Android and iOS apps updated for TV playback

Crackle's free movie streaming expands to the Nook Tablet, coming soon to Kindle Fire

It may not have quite the catalog of Netflix (or the same HD quality), but Sony Pictures’ Crackle streaming service does have one big thing going for it: it’s completely free. It’s also found its way onto plenty of different platforms (most recently Windows Phone), and that run has now continued with its expansion onto Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet (but not the Nook Color). What’s more, while there’s no release date confirmed just yet, Crackle says that the app is “coming soon” to the Kindle Fire as well. It’s also revealed that the app has now seen 11 million downloads across all mobile platforms — a figure that may now see a boost not only from the new Nook app, but from the just-updated Android and iOS apps, which each boast a redesigned interface and support for TV playback via AirPlay or HDMI.

Verizon’s Viewdini appears on iOS: works on any network, hunts video from 11 sources

Verizon's Viewdini appears on iOS: works on any network, hunts video from 11 sources

The Viewdini streaming metasearch service launched a few months ago for Verizon’s 4G LTE-laden Android hardware, and now it’s finally available on iDevices. While the droid app is exclusive to those with a 4G plan on Big Red’s network, anything running iOS 4.3 and up can now make use of Viewdini, independently of carrier ties. As the screenshots above show, you’re also good to go on 3G, although you better watch that data allowance to avoid any nasty surprises. Interestingly, the iOS version currently only digs through the catalogues of 11 content providers compared with 18 on the Android version, but you’re still getting access to various big names like ABC, Crackle, Hulu Plus, Netflix and Verizon’s own video service. More providers should be added to the list soon, and if you’d like to give Viewdini a try, it’s available at the App Store now.

Crackle arrives on Windows Phone

Have you ever heard of the video app known as Crackle before? If you haven’t, then here is a quick refresher for you – Crackle is said to be a popular video app that has appeared on its fair share of platforms, and I guess you can say that it has been a long time in coming to see Crackle finally make its debut on the Windows Phone platform. This is an ad-supported streaming service which is capable of delivering one access to films including Pineapple Express, Layer Cake in addition to popular TV series’ such as Seinfeld, all on the comfort of your smartphone device.

Needless to say, since it is ad-supported, you can be sure that just as the sun rises from the east and sets in the west, so too, will Crackle be available as a free app. If you are interested in giving some crackling video goodness (sorry, I just could not resist that) on your smartphone, then you can download Crackle onto your Windows Phone device over from the Market Place. For those who have already given it a go, how has your experience with Crackle for Windows Phone been so far?
