Creative’s D5XM self-calibrating modular wireless speaker gets previewed at IFA (video)

Creative's D5XM selfcalibrating modular wireless speaker and DSXM subwoofer make beautiful music together video

If you’ve been following our IFA coverage this morning (and shame on you if you haven’t), the Creative D5XM’s name ought to ring a bell or two. After all, it wasn’t so long ago that we were telling you all about the Creative D5 Air. The D5XM, however, while similar in name, is a decidedly more serious deal than the AirPlay speaker bar. Creative is hyping the product as “the world’s first self-calibrating modular wireless speaker” — it’s a mouthful, but its certainly a cool prospect. The rectangular speaker can be used alone or as part of a larger speaker system, communicating with other D5XM devices and the DSXM — coincidentally, “the subwoofer for the world’s first self-calibrating modular wireless speaker.” What are the odds?

You can string up to three D5XMs together and two of the subwoofers, if you’re really, really into low-end. No word on pricing for these guys yet, but we imagine that such a set up would get fairly costly, fairly fast. Creative’s referring to the three-at-a-time deal as “party mode,” in which all three devices are playing the same thing simultaneously — you can also split them up into discrete channels, using a mobile device (iOS or Android). That communication (which occurs via Bluetooth) happens thanks to the chip in the speaker — the same as the one we saw on the Sound BlasterAxx. Click on through for more info and a video.

Creative launches new Sound Blaster sound cards for PCs

We can thank GamesCon going on in Germany this week for all the new gaming hardware and peripherals that have surfaced today. At the show, Creative has unveiled its latest line of Sound Blaster soundcards for computer users. It has been a long time since we talked about a Sound Blaster sound card. The Sound Blaster used to be common in gaming PCs, but many people have started using HD integrated audio support on the mainboard rather than a add-on card for audio.

Creative has unveiled three new Sound Blaster varieties including the ZxR, Zx, and the Z. The ZxR is a top-of-the-line with Creative claiming it’s the world’s best sounding sound card. The card retails for $249.99 and uses studio-grade components inside including digital to analog converters delivering 127 dB signal-to-noise ratio. The sound card also has an 80 mW into 600-ohm headphone amplifier and 192 kHz pass through.

All those features are targeted at the best audio quality available. The car also has a small daughterboard with an optical output and a lot more. The next down is the Sound Blaster Zx retailing for $149.99. It offers the same exact hardware as the ZxR minus the DBpro daughterboard. This card also has an attention grabbing color scheme with a red EMI shielding and glowing LED lights.

On the low end of the spectrum is the Sound Blaster Z with a retail price of $99.99. It has the same hardware as the Zx sound card minus the external Audio Control Module. The sound card is aimed at gamers looking for an all-around gaming entertainment solution on a budget. It features 120dB SNR and supports 192kHz direct pass-through to analog out as well as a 600-ohm headphone amplifier, glowing LED lighting, and more. All of these cards use PCI Express slots inside your PC.

Creative reveals Sound Blaster ZxR, Zx, and Z PCI-Express sound cards, pumps up the volume

Creative reveals Sound Blaster ZxR, Zx, and Z PCIExpress sound cards, pumps up the volume

Along with your first day at school, and (for the boys at least) growing your first peach fuzz mustache, many of you might also never forget your first Sound Blaster soundcard. In the present day (unless you’re blessed with youth) only the Sound Blaster can be enjoyed again, and today Creative introduces its new Z-series. The latest PCI-Express cards use the firm’s Core3D quad-core sound and voice processor and come in three variants: the Sound Blaster ZxR, the Zx and the Z. As you might have guessed, the more letters, the higher up the food chain it is. The flagship ZxR ($249.99) boasts a 127dB SNR, sockets for swappable Op-Amps, 80mW into 600 ohm headphone pre-amp, plus RCA / optical connectivity (via additional daughter board) and an external “ACM” control module for less fiddling around the back of your machine. You can save yourself $100 with the Zx model, if you don’t want the ZxR’s “DBpro” daughter board, and the Z edition saves a further $50 at the expense of the external controller. Want to dive into the full specifications? Plug in to the PR after the break.

This is What Happens When 100 Artists Get Their Hands on 100 Phone Booths

You won’t see phone booths as creative or as colorful as the ones you’ll find in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Typically, phone booths are made to look plain so they’ll blend in with the surroundings, and only the people actually looking for them will be able to really “see” them.

Well, not anymore.

Call Parade

Brazilian telco Vivo decided it was time to cast these telephone booths into the spotlight once and for all. To do so, they launched the Call Parade public art project, where they paired off 100 phone booths with a hundred artists.

The result is crazy amazing, and the phone booths are literally transformed into public displays of art.

Personally, I like the one with the pencil the best. Check out the full gallery of phone booths here (along with maps of their locations,) and tell me, which one’s your favorite?

Would You Like a Nyan Cat Running on Your T-Shirt? You Can Do that With tshirtOS

So this won’t be the first time that you’ll see an interactive shirt (remember the fully playable electric guitar t-shirt and the drum machine shirt?), but this is the first shirt of its kind to actually be able to do all that it promises to do. The tshirtOS. A t-shirt with its own operating system. The name already sounds cool, but just wait until you see the actual thing.

tshirtOSThe tshirtOS is the result of a joint venture between Ballantine’s and CuteCircuit. The shirt is described as a wearable (obviously), sharable, and programmable piece of clothing that you can use to display random stuff like tweets, animation, and photos, and even play music and videos.

The shirt features a large multi-color, flexible LED grid, connected to a controller circuit and battery pack. It’ll also have a camera, accelerometer, microphone and speakers for truly interactive displays. It’s controlled by an app that’s to be installed on your smartphone. Because of its programmable nature, the sky’s the limit with this baby.

Make a fashion statement, share your thoughts by displaying your tweets as you go along, and make a nyan cat run around your shirt to give everyone around you a dose of geeky randomness.

Want it? Head on over to tshirtOS.com to find out more.
